In a 2011 interview for JoniMitchell.com, Max Bennett said that although the pay was good for this tour, the musicians could have made more money playing gigs in L.A. and doing session work in the recording studios. Max said that the musicians loved the music, however, and that they were treated royally in every way throughout the tour. Excellent food, first class accommodations, limousines, private buses and private planes were all provided for the band’s comfort. Max also made a point of mentioning the quality of the audiences that attended the concerts. Attention was focused on the performances so completely that practically complete silence reigned in the theaters and auditoriums until after the last note of any given song was performed. Abstract This thesis analyzes facets of resistance in the lyrics of female country music performers and explores how their articulations of female resistance draw on and rework Appalachian folk traditions within country music. Beginning with the musical practices of Appalachian women, who used music to lament their lives restricted by domestic responsibilities, this thesis examines expressions of female resistance through lyrical analysis, with a concentration on female country performers from 1995 to the present. Despite evolving into a performance tradition, female resistance in country music continues to address the lived experiences of its female audience. As such, the female resistance tradition is an enduring component of country music that has addressed women’s issues for over a century.

These elements are intended to help you grow in your call as a disciple of Christ. This growth will likely look far different for all of us and each component might reach us all in different ways. It is my hope that at least one of the components is able to reach you each day and speak to your spirit. 1. Scripture - Each day will have a passage from Scripture that I will encourage you to read and reflect on. This reflecting can be done in spoken or written word. It can be done in prayer or conversation. It can be as short or as long as your time allows. 2. Song - Each day will provide a new song to listen to as well as printed lyrics. Links will be available to these songs on YouTube. If you do not have access to YouTube, please contact the church for CD options. 3. Quote - Each day will provide a quote from the perspective of a person of color. Black and brown voices are voices we do not lift up often enough. You are invited to reflect on the quote throughout the day. 4. Prayer - Each day will have a prayer that you are able to pray out loud or silently. It is my hope that these devotionals are able to meet you where you need to be met as we journey through this Lenten season.
