There are 30,000 new cancer diagnoses in Scotland each year and more than 220,000 people are living with or after cancer. Funds raised at The Shoot 2015 will help to make sure that Maggie’s can offer support to as many of those people as possible, and their family and friends, for as long as they need it. Maggie’s Centres offer free practical, emotional and social support to help people who are facing the tough questions, exhausting treatments and difficult emotions that cancer can bring. That support might include nutrition or relaxation workshops, one-to-one time with a psychologist, kids and family days out or just sharing a pot of tea with others in the same situation or with Maggie’s professional, qualified staff.

Over the past 18 years, the people of Scotland have raised funds to build and run eight Centres in the grounds of specialist NHS cancer hospitals in Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Kirkcaldy, Lanarkshire, Aberdeen and Forth Valley. Maggie’s welcome over 65,000 visitors to our Centres each year and expect that number to increase to around 120,000 over the next three years.

Type 1 diabetes affects 400,000 people in the UK including 26,000 children. In the last year, 420 people under the age of 20 in Scotland were

diagnosed with type 1. It is a chronic, Silent Auction – Arts & Entertainment life threatening condition which has a life-long impact on those diagnosed with it and their families. It often strikes in childhood and stays with those

Type 1 diabetes means that the body cannot regulate blood glucose levels on its own and people with type 1 rely on multiple injections or pump infusions of insulin a day, just to stay alive. A child diagnosed aged five, faces up to 19,000 injections by the time they are 18 years old.

The condition can happen to anyone and is not caused by anything that the person, or their parents, did or did not do. Only research will find the cure. JDRF exists to drive that research; finding the cure and greatly improving the lives of people with type 1 is now just a matter of time and money.

Our speaker today is Joan Ingram who is a member of the JDRF Type 1 Voices Council, the lay body that helps inform the Research Committee, which currently sponsors over £325 million of scientific research worldwide. She will tell you about the realities of living with type 1 and JDRF’s plan to cure, treat and prevent it.
