Dresdner Philharmonie The Dresden Philharmonic can look back on 150 years of history as the orchestra of Saxony’s capital Dresden. When the so-called “Gewerbehaussaal” opened on 29 November 1870, the citizens of the city were given the opportunity to organise major orchestra concerts. Philharmonic concerts were held regularly starting in 1885; the orchestra adopted its present name in 1923. In its first decades, composers such as Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Dvořák and Strauss conducted the Dresdner Philharmonie with their own works. The first desks were presided over by outstanding concertmasters such as Stefan Frenkel, Simon Goldberg and the cellists Stefan Auber and Enrico Mainardi. From 1934, Carl Schuricht and Paul van Kempen led the orchestra; van Kempen in particular guided the Dresden Philharmonic to top achievements. All of Bruckner’s symphonies were first performed in their original versions, which earned the orchestra the reputation of a “Bruckner orchestra” and brought renowned guest conductors such as Hermann Abendroth, Eduard van Beinum, Fritz Busch, Eugen Jochum, Joseph Keilbert, Erich Kleiber, Hans Knappertsbusch and Franz Konwitschny to the rostrum. After 1945 and into the 1990s, Heinz Bongartz, Horst Förster, Kurt Masur (from 1994 also honorary conductor), Günther Herbig, Herbert Kegel, Jörg-Peter Weigle and Michel Plasson were the principal conductors. In recent years, conductors such as Marek Janowski, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos and Michael Sanderling have shaped the orchestra. As of season 2019/2020, Marek Janowski has returned to the Dresden Philharmonic as principal conductor and artistic director. Its home is the highly modern concert hall inaugurated in April 2017 in the Kulturpalast building in the heart of the historic old town.

A Study of Tyzen Hsiao’s Piano Concerto, Op. 53: A Comparison with Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 D.M.A Document Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Lin-Min Chang, M.M. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2018 D.M.A. Document Committee: Professor Steven Glaser, Advisor Dr. Anna Gowboy Dr. Kia-Hui Tan Copyright by Lin-Min Chang 2018 2 ABSTRACT One of the most prominent Taiwanese composers, Tyzen Hsiao, is known as the “Sergei Rachmaninoff of Taiwan.” The primary purpose of this document is to compare and discuss his Piano Concerto Op. 53, from a performer’s perspective, with the Second Piano Concerto of Sergei Rachmaninoff. Hsiao’s preferences of musical materials such as harmony, texture, and rhythmic patterns are influenced by Romantic, Impressionist, and 20th century musicians incorporating these elements together with Taiwanese folk song into a unique musical style. This document consists of four chapters. The first chapter introduces Hsiao’s biography and his musical style; the second chapter focuses on analyzing Hsiao’s Piano Concerto Op. 53 in C minor from a performer’s perspective; the third chapter is a comparison of Hsiao and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concertos regarding the similarities of orchestration and structure, rhythm and technique, phrasing and articulation, harmony and texture. The chapter also covers the differences in the function of the cadenza, and the interaction between solo piano and orchestra; and the final chapter provides some performance suggestions to the practical issues in regard to phrasing, voicing, technique, color, pedaling, and articulation of Hsiao’s Piano Concerto from the perspective of a pianist.

1 ST.

  • Annotated Bibliography of Sources on the History of Piano Pedagogy Compiled by Members of the NCKP Historical Perspectives Committee
Annotated Bibliography of Sources on the History of Piano Pedagogy Compiled by Members of the NCKP Historical Perspectives Committee Connie Arrau Sturm (CAS) – Committee Chairman Debra Brubaker Burns (DBB) Anita Jackson (AJ) General historical surveys Boardman, Roger Crager. “A History of Theories of Teaching Piano Technic.” Ph.D. diss., New York University, 1954. Boardman investigated how theories of teaching piano technique changed from 1753 to 1953. He classified the theories into three categories - finger technique, use of the arm, and weight/relaxation. Within each category of theories, he not only analyzed how the body was used and how it interacted with the instrument, but also discussed how these techniques were taught. Boardman’s comparisons among theories helped pinpoint when important changes occurred, revealing the special contributions of each pedagogue. Boardman concluded that concepts of piano technique evolved from use of fingers only, to the coordination of the entire body (highlighting the importance of the brain). He also noted the strong influence of environmental factors (e.g., changes in the instrument, changes in the repertoire, and inspiration of great performers of the day) on the development of theories of teaching piano technique. (CAS) Bomberger, E. Douglas, Martha Dennis Burns, James Parakilas, Judith Tick, Marina Tsvetaeva, and Mark Tucker. “The Piano Lesson” In Piano Roles: Three Hundred Years of Life with the Piano. James Parakilas, 133-179. New Haven, Connecticut: Yale University Press, 1999. This chapter chronicled how teaching piano and studying piano have changed over the centuries. The authors described the evolution of piano study from eighteenth-century daily lessons, where students practiced in the presence of the piano teacher, to nineteenth-century weekly lessons that required long hours of daily practice in between.
