Spiritual Quest (Answers by Sri Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma) In Lakshmi Stōtra there is a nama ‘Kāmākṣīm krōdha sambhavāṁ ’. In some places it is written as ‘Kāmām kṣīrōda sambhavāṁ’ or ‘Kṣamāṁ kṣīrōda sambhavāṁ’. Out of these three which one is correct? What is the true interpretation of the first one? In ancient texts, it is mentioned as ‘Kāmākṣīm krōdha sambhavaṁ’. This hymn of Lakshmi is directed towards adulating the Divine Mother as Mother of the universe and contains the gist of ‘Śrī sūkta’ and other Dēvī sūktas. Nonetheless, other terms are also not totally erroneous. Because, She is the root cause of creation, sustenance and dissolution and the embodiment of ‘Kāmēśvara’, ‘Kāmāṁ’ is also acceptable. Forbearance is divine attribute. ‘Kṣama’ also means Earth. Because, She is an ocean of patience and Herself the very form of this earth, ‘Kṣama’ is also acceptable. Because, She emerged from the milky ocean, She is known as ‘kṣīrōda sambhavaṁ’. However, the ancient teaching of ‘Kāmākṣīm krōdha sambhavaṁ’ is very meaningful. Parāśakti Dēvi Kāmākṣi, arose from the anger of Gods and hence She is ‘Krōdhasambhavāṁ’. Origin of this story is found in Dēvī Mahātmyam of Mārkandēya Purāṇa. When Gods were unable to bear the atrocities of Mahiṣāsura and went to plead with Brahma, Viṣṇu and Mahēśvara, their anger emerged and took the form of omnipotent ‘Dēvi’ with eighteen hands, combining with the energy that emitted from other Gods. She later killed Mahiṣāsura. Since She arose from the fury of the gods, She is praised as ‘Krōdha sambhavāṁ’. ‘Samanvaya is Sanātana – Sāmarasya is Bhāratīyata’ © Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma 1 Worship procedures and practices of Sri Maha Lakshmi are expounded in greater detail in ‘Lakṣmi pān̄carātra’ āgama. In Dasa Mahā Vidyas i.e. the ten great sciences of Divine Mother, She is mentioned as ‘Kamalātmike’, the ninth one. Her form is described in the sloka below - “vande padmakarāṃ prasannavadanāṃ saubhāgyadāṃ bhāgyadāṃ Hastābhyām abhayapradāṃ maṇigaṇaiḥ nānāvidhaiḥ bhūṣitām | bhaktābhīṣṭa phalapradāṃ harihara brahmādibhissevitāṃ pārśve paṅkaja śaṅkhapadma nidhibhiḥ yuktāṃ sadā śaktibhiḥ” || ‘I bow down to that Maha Lakshmi, the Shakti incarnate Herself, who - is holding two lotus flowers in both Her hands, has Abhaya (protective) and Varada (bestowing boons) poses in remaining two hands, grants immense wealth and prosperity, bedecked with various ornaments of different gems and precious stones, ever ready to fulfill the wishes of Her devotees, served by Hari, Hara, Brahma and others, has the treasure deities Shankha and Padma by Her side.” Some among many epithets of Sri Maha Lakshmi Devi are Kamala, Padma, Kamalavāsini, Kamalātmika, Padma Mālinīṁ Śrī Ādi Śaṅkara says ‘Avidyānaam and Padmanābha Priya. All the above are Antastimira Mihira Dwīpa Nagari..’ in associated with Lotus. She sits in a blossomed Soundarya Lahari. ‘Antastimiram’ i.e. lotus and holds blossomed lotuses. Among all darkness inside - is a loaded term. The Sun the flowers, Lotus holds special distinction. As in the sky is sufficient to dispel the darkness said ‘Padmakosa Pratīkasagm Hrudayam outside, whereas even one thousand Suns Capyadhō Mukham..’, in Vedas, our heart is also are not capable of dispelling the darkness compared to a lotus flower.
