Horse Stealing at Church. People who ride to church at night or in the day ought to keep a sharp lookout for their fine saddle horses and buggies, Last Tuesday night, Mr. Sim L. Death of John ROSS. John ROSS, the well-known chief of the Cherokee tribe, died in this city yesterday evening. Mr. ROSS, for more than a third of a century, exercised a powerful and controlling influence, not only over his own people, but upon the border tribes. He was a man of great political sagacity, which is shown in the fact that he so long maintained the ascendancy as chief of his nation, to which place he was elected every four years. A place which he filled when the Cherokee people went from their old home into Arkansas, in 1835. He married a lady, we believe, in Delaware, and leaves a numerous family connection. When the war opened he embarked with the South, carrying with him the most of the full bloods of his nation, but subsequently he changed front, and was afterwards with the Union. He could not have been much less than seventy five years of age at the time of his death – National Intelligencer, 2nd inst.

Married in Newnan, Ga. July 17th, 1866 by Rev. F.M. DANIEL, Capt. Govan STAFFORD, formerly of Co. A, 6th Regt. Tennessee Volunteers, MANEY’s Brigade, CHEATHAM’s Division, HARDEE’s Corps, Army of Tennessee to Miss Mollie A.B. THURMAN, formerly of Griffin, Ga. (Page 3 Column 3)

WANTED: PHOTOGRAPH OF RICHARD HUGH CARMICHAEL

Richard Hugh CARMICHAEL Sarah Wellborn CARMICHAEL

When the CCGS Library returned to Newnan, GA, they located on Carmichael Street. It was then that we learned that Carmichael Street was named for the family of Richard Hugh CARMICHAEL who lived there during the 1800’s.

We have researched Richard Hugh CARMICHAEL’s family, but we still cannot find a picture of him. He was married to Sarah WELLBORN, daughter of Cordial (Cordy) WELLBORN, who moved to Newnan in 1834. Richard and Sarah married on June 29, 1846, and had four children:

• Frances Catherine CARMICHAEL KELLER (1847-1885) • Julia Elizabeth CARMICHAEL CAVENDER (1848-1939) • William Spencer CARMICHAEL (1850-1943) • A son who died at childbirth

Richard’s parents were William and Elizabeth CARMICHAEL. Richard was one of 20 children. His father had eight children by his first wife, Sallie SMITH CARMICHAEL, and 12 children by his second wife, Elizabeth WILLIAMS CARMICHAEL (Richard’s mother).

If anyone has a photograph of Richard Hugh CARMICHAEL or if anyone knows where one can be located, please notify CCGS using the address on the back cover of this issue of the Coweta Courier.
