Wisdom for God’s People – Proverbs ; ; Song of Story Point: is loving God and obeying His Word.

Summary: God gave King Solomon wisdom to lead God’s people. People came from far away to hear Solomon’s wise words. Solomon wrote down wise thoughts called proverbs in Proverbs and Song of Solomon. He told

God’s people how to make wise choices. Solomon said, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart (Proverbs

3:5)… “A gentle answer turns away anger, but a harsh word stirs up anger (Proverbs 15:1)… Even a young man is known by his actions – by whether his behavior is pure and upright (Proverbs 20:11).” Solomon wrote another book of the called Ecclesiastes. He wrote about money and work and how to live a life that matters. The important thing, Solomon said, is to love and obey God. In Song of Solomon, he wrote about love, celebrating God’s wise plan for love and marriage.

Questions:

Big Picture Question: What does God know? God knows everything. 1. Which books of the Bible did Solomon write? (Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon.) 2. What is wisdom? (Wisdom is loving God and obeying His Word.) 3. Can wisdom save us from sin? (No! Only Jesus can save us from sin.) 4. How does wisdom help us? (It helps us be like Jesus.)

5. Memorize James 1:5a as a family: “Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God.”

Christ Connection: God gives us wisdom in the Bible. Wisdom helps us be like Jesus – in how we live, how we talk, and how we think. But wisdom cannot save us. Only Jesus, who perfectly followed God’s wise plan, can rescue us from sin.

Solomon wrote, “Fools hate wisdom and instruction (Proverbs 1:7).” Solomon wrote another book of the Bible called Ecclesiastes and talked about money and work and how to live a good life. Solomon also wrote a poem about love, which is called Song of Solomon.

4. Why can’t wisdom save us? (Explain that wisdom cannot make us perfect or righteous. Wisdom can

help us make good choices, but only Jesus can forgive us of our sin and save us.

Fools trust in themselves and do not trust or follow God.) 3. How can you seek to grow in wisdom? (Explain that we can pray and ask God for understanding in life as we learn about the Bible and study it for ourselves.)
