Star Wars Day at the Sacramento Zoo Popular event back for a second year WHAT’S HAPPENING: Meet your favorite Star Wars characters without making a trip to a galaxy far, far away. This Sacramento Zoo will bring the big screen to life with a visit from characters like Darth Vader, Kylo Ren, BB-8, R2-D2, Stormtroopers and other fan favorites. The day’s festivities will also focus on conservation and education with Star Wars-themed enrichments for the animals and children’s crafts. Nichols The new Space Center Houston exhibit will feature the mock-up shuttle Independence sitting atop the Boeing 747, in the “ ferry position.” Both exhibit director Paul Spana and educational director Dr. Melanie Johnson agree that the Houston exhibit offers a unique opportunity. Visitors here will have a far more tangible, hands-on educational experience than those who visit sites housing the formerly active shuttles. They can explore the insides of the 747 and the shuttle itself and see what it would be like to pilot the shuttle, crammed into the pilot’s deck. Students will explore the center’s interactive exhibits and see how science comes to life in human space exploration. In partnership with Space Center Houston, the Houston Rockets and the Houston Community College System are teaching science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to youth through the fundamentals of rocketry. The hands-on learning experiences engage students to think about a future STEM career. The program, Rocket Science, includes a half-day STEM workshop at Space Center Houston and culminates with “Rockets Launch Day,” teaching students to work together on fun science-based activities and building critical-thinking skills. Rocket Science teaches students about the laws of physics and explores Newton’s laws of motion with a variety of hands-on activities, educational webinars and discussions with NASA experts who actively are working to further human space exploration. Over the course of several weeks, students will have fun launching rockets; learn about rocket fuels and their importance to deep space exploration; practice rocket staging to simulate a multi-stage rocket launch; and construct a rocket-powered racing car.
