The Guide Book you have just purchased deliberately does not contain any details of the rolling stock you may encounter on your visit today, as that list can change on a regular basis. To that end, we include now a list of stock currently on the railway: -

Locomotives

No 4 “Naworth” Re-engined 180 hp Hudswell-Clarke, 0-6-0 diesel mechanical ; passenger diesel. Green body with yellow frames; red coupling rods.

No 9 70 hp Hunslet, 0-4-0 diesel mechanical locomotive; this is the main works locomotive. Battleship grey with red band, black frame & wheels, red coupling rods & buffer beams.

No 10 “Naklo” 70 hp Chrzanow (Polish) 0-6-0 plus 4-wheel tender, originally fitted with both side and well tanks. Rebuilt at Alston in 2001 and again, with new boiler and tender tank, in 2019. Livery to be determined.

No 11 “Cumbria” 60 hp Hunslet, 0-4-0 diesel mechanical. This locomotive is usually used in Alston yard and on works trains. Although fitted with air brakes, it is not suitable for passenger service. Apple green body, black frames, red wheels and buffer beams.

No 16 “Green Dragon” (number not carried) Formerly UVE no 1. 90 hp Hunslet, purchased in January 1998. Restored at North Bay Engineering, Statfold Barn and South Tynedale Railway, to run on waste wood briquettes. In service.

No 17 4 wheel 50 hp battery electric locomotive for shunting. Built by Baguley-Drewry Ltd & rebuilt by Andrew Barclay in 1987. Fitted with new batteries in 2004. Green body with yellow and black chevron buffer beams. Used as the works shunter (number not carried)

No 18 “Old Rusty” Re-engined 180 hp Hudswell-Clarke, 0-6-0 diesel mechanical locomotive; passenger diesel. Original dimensions identical to no 4, but the full original chassis has been used for the rebuild to passenger service. Privately owned, but currently the main passenger diesel. Terracotta body, red coupling rods, wheels and buffer beams, black frames.

No 19 “Barber” 0-6-2 saddle tank built by Green of for the Harrogate Gas Works Line, hence the low cab to fit through the tunnel on that line. In ticket but currently out of service awaiting new cylinder linings.

No 20 “Moes” 28 hp 2-cylinder air cooled Deutz engine with electric start, so a delight for quick turn usage. Built by Moes, Waremne, Belgium in 1937. Privately owned and usually to be found near Shed 3.

No 21 “Carlisle” 4-wheel battery electric locomotive built by Clayton for Metronet Rail/Transport for . Re-gauged from standard gauge. Green frames, maroon body, yellow & black striped buffer beams.

No 22 “Newcastle” 4-wheel battery electric locomotive built by Clayton for Metronet Rail/Transport for London. Re-gauged from standard gauge. Maroon frames, green body, yellow & black striped buffer beams.

MHR 740 Not yet allocated an STR number. 0-6-0T steam locomotive built by Orenstein & Koppel for the Matheran Hill Railway, India. Dismantled awaiting rebuilding. Blue & white of India Railways.
