Centre Pompidou Foundation Announces over $9 million in Acquisitions and Donations in 2016

28 JUNE, 2017

The Centre Pompidou Foundation is pleased to announce its acquisitions and donations for 2016. Works of art valued at over $9.1 million were acquired by, or donated to, the Foundation, marking it as the most successful year ever for the organization. The Foundation purchased works of art by artists Mary Kelly and Lisa Oppenheim. The Foundation received donations of works of art, exclusive of promised gifts, valued at over $8.8 million that include works by George Condo, Nate Lowman, Richard Prince, and Cheyney Thompson, as well as a significant number of works from the collection of Thea Westreich Wagner and Ethan Wagner. Virtually all of the works given by the Westreich-Wagners were exhibited in 2015 and 2016 at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, and were originally part of a larger promised gift, one that will be transformative in nature to the Centre Pompidou’s collection. These approximately 100 works of art join more than 170 works previously purchased or donated to the Foundation, which are valued in the aggregate at over $59 million.

Eliza Osborne, Executive Director of the Centre Pompidou Foundation, said: “We are honored and pleased to have obtained such a impressive number of acquisitions and important donations for the Foundation. We are grateful to our members and patrons for their commitment to our mission and look forward to continuing our close collaboration with the Centre Pompidou’s leadership and curatorial staff.”

The French government has recently named Eliza Osborne Chevalier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres, a prestigious accolade bestowed upon either French nationals or foreigners who have served the country and upheld its ideals. In 2016 Centre Pompidou Foundation Chairman Steven Guttman was named Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur, France’s highest honor. A member of the Foundation since 2007 and Chairman since 2012, Steven Guttman has been instrumental in forwarding its mission of acquiring and encouraging gifts of American works of art for the Centre Pompidou.
