The Gothuruth Boat Race started on 1938, and was inaugurated by the freedom fighter Paravur T. K. Narayana Pillai. Each island nearby Gothuruth will be having their own boats which will be taking part in the race. This festival is conducted by Gothuruth Sports and Arts Club. The event takes place in one of the tributaries of River Periyar on whose banks are located the Moothakunnam Sree Narayanamangalam temple and Kadalvathurthu Holy Cross Church. This religious harmony works as a catalyst to enhance the participation of residents in and around Gothuruth.
