HATS Journal 8 VIETNAM VETERANS DAY SERVICE – BETHUNGRA 18TH AUGUST 2018 President Bob Bak reported the following to the local media: Saturday, 18th August 2018, saw Bethungra conduct its very first Vietnam Veterans Day service. It was a cold and windy day which seen 13 attendees brave the conditions on the day. The welcoming address was presented by Bob Bak, President of the Integrated Servicepeople’s Association of Australia. In his speech, he dedicated the service to all who served in Vietnam, those troops at home who supported them, those who paid the supreme sacrifice, those that could not cope with life after returning home, and importantly the wives and families which were the bedrock of continuing support and keeping their families together. The service also dedicated the names of local and district veterans who died as a result of their service. This was followed by a wreath and poppy laying tribute to all Vietnam and Cold War veterans, The Last Post the Ode and the Reveille. We hope that the next service is a warm day and many more attendees. It is the least we can do to honour our Vietnam era veterans.

HATS Journal 18 VALES PATRICIA MARY LAURENT nee Glasscock Born: 4th March 1929 Passed Away: 31st August 2018 We received news from Pat’s daughter, Mary, that her mother Pat had passed away on 31st August at the age of 89 years. We met Pat and her late husband Kevin several years ago at their home at San Isadore to assist with Kevin’s claim at the time. We found them to be such a lovely couple. Sadly Kevin passed away on 30th December 2016. Kevin served in the Army and enlisted on 14th June 1946 and served till his discharge on 19th April 1949. During his service he was posted to Japan as a radio technician with the BCOF repairing radios etc. during the “cleanup” period after the war. A little of Pat’s life given to us from her daughter Mary: Pat was born to Bill and Ivy Glasscock and she was the eldest of five children. The family lived in Belmore Street Penrith and Pat attended St. Joseph’s Convent School. Her father was a railway guard and shunter, and her mother was a beautiful dressmaker. Pat’s first job was as a telephonist at the Penrith Telephone Exchange. At the time one gentleman who worked for the PMG came to fix the exchange switchboard and this is when she met her partner for life Kevin. Kevin and Pat were married in Penrith on 23rd February 1952. After their wedding Kevin and Pat moved to Narrandera where they started their family. In time they moved to Temora due to Kevin’s employment. As the family grew (there were 8 children at the time) they decided to buy a block of land (5 acres) in San Isadore and build a house. The family then moved into their new house in June 1967 and by 1972 the family had increased to 11 children. Pat decided that having this extra land she could put it to some use and started to grow strawberries for a little extra pocket money and keep the kids busy as well. She was well known at the local markets and fruit and vegie shops for her strawberries. Daughter Mary recalls “we would help her pick her strawberries and at night we would help her sort, weigh and pack the strawberries into punnets wrapping them carefully with cellophane and pinching some to sell at school the next day unbeknown to mum.” Pat was mother to 11 children, seven boys and four girls…Keiran, Michael, Rowan, Mary, Anne, Peter, Liz Damian, Richard, James and Margie. Grandmother to 25 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Condolences from the association have been extended to all the Laurent family. LEST WE FORGET.

ALBERT (BERT) THOMAS WOLFE RAAF Service No: 43867/A16427 Service Dates: Permanent RAAF: 15 October 1941 to 14 February 1947 RAAF Reserve: 14 July 1952 to 25 February 1957 *EDITOR OF 24 SQUADRON RAAF Newsletter. Born: 1st February 1922 Passed Away: 28th June 2018 Recently we received news from the Wolfe family of the passing of one of our long time members, Bert Wolfe, after he suffered an infection in his leg which eventuated in his death a month later. Bert was 96 years old. The family said that Bert had many battles with his health and for this, his last Bert Wolfe (Editor) battle, he appeared mercifully unaware of this outcome (thanks to the morphine for the pain in his leg). with his faithful Over the past 11 years we had a lot of discussions with Bert, whether it be on a claim matter, social companion “Peanut” talk, or input into his associations’ newsletters of which he was the Editor by exchanging stories and jokes. Bert’s readership took in veterans from No. 24 Squadron and associated flying groups. At the time of Bert’s death he had prepared several newsletters in advance for his members and as at October 2018 he had reached the 112th edition. Well done Bert. We would like to take this opportunity to share Bert’s life with our members and readers. Received from Bert’s son, Peter Wolfe My father Albert, or Bert as he was known, was born to Thomas and Elizabeth Wolfe in Ingham Qld on 1st February 1922. Bert’s parents and his 2 year old brother Vince lived on a cattle station known as Dry River, some 100 miles inland from Ingham. The family eventually left Dry River because of drought and settled in Milla Milla on the Atherton Tableland where Bert’s younger brother Bill was born. Not long after the family was to move again, this time to Thursday Island where his father Thomas had a job with the local council in clerical and administration work. The family would again move and return to the mainland, settling at Pittsworth just outside Toowoomba. On leaving school Bert got a job as an apprentice motor mechanic with a local motor, tractor and farm machinery

HATS Journal 20 dealer. Bert said he preferred working on the tractors which came disassembled in crates which he and the other more experienced apprentices would put together just like a meccano set. In October 1941, aged 19, Bert received his call-up notice to Brisbane to join the RAAF. His initial training would be at the No. 4 School of Technical Training in Adelaide to qualify as an Aircraft Engine Fitter. Bert was then stationed to 24 squadron at Townsville, then on to Bankstown in 1943. He was then sent in a forward group to Dobodura in Papua/New Guinea in August 1943. Bert was sent back to Oakey Qld in May 1944 where he was engaged in “running-in” aircraft motors set up in stands. In June 1944 he was posted to 79 Squadron at Bert Wolfe taken in 2015, at his desk with a selection of his Morotai in Dutch New Guinea where he worked on Spitfire many newsletters. Picture: Simone De Peak motors. In December 1945 he returned to Australia. In March 1946, Bert was posted to Survey Squadron Canberra-Mosquitos. During this year Bert and another airman were sent to RAAF Base Williamtown to source as many Mosquito aircraft parts as possible. As fate would have it, it was at this work location during his time off that he would meet his future wife to be by the name of Helen Bailey. On his return to his base in Canberra, Bert would regularly travel by train between Canberra and Newcastle to visit her. Bert was discharged from the RAAF in February 1947 and on 9th August 1947 Bert and Helen were married at St. Augustine Anglican Church at Merewether. They moved to Cannon Hill in Qld where he commenced worked with the PMG doing clerical type of work. He was able later to get a transfer to the engineering branch at Maitland then on to the Newcastle engineering section which involved several house moves for the family. In 1959 the family settled at Highfields after Bert bought a block of land and built their home. Bert took early retirement from Telecom in 1976 and was retired for 42 years. Sadly my mother Helen passed away in December 2009. Besides other interests, Bert’s long time passion was creating a newsletter for members of 24 Squadron Air Force Association. He was the Secretary of the association and he treasured the camaraderie with the members. Bert enjoyed marching in the Sydney Anzac Day parades and notched up about 20 although in a wheelchair in the more recent years. Our condolences have been passed on to all the Wolfe family together with a memorial flag tribute to remember Bert’s service to his country. TO A FINE VETERAN WHO SPENT ALL OF HIS LIFE DEDICATED NOT ONLY TO HIS FAMILY BUT ALSO TO HIS MEMBERS AND MATES…….LEST WE FORGET.

BARRY JOHN DUNCAN Army Service No: 2790915 Enlisted: 24 July 1968 Discharged: 23 July 1970 Born: 14 February 1948 Date of Death: 11 October 2018 It was sad to receive news of Barry’s passing last October. His wife Fay advised us that he had not been well for the past several years. Barry was a long-time member of the I.S.A.A. and as he served with 6RAR in South Vietnam during 1969/1970, many other veterans would have known him also. From the family: Barry was born on the 14th February 1948, he was the first son of Kevin and Joan Duncan (nee Murdoch). He had two brothers Bill (known as Hooker) and Kevin (deceased) and a sister Rhonda. The family lived around the Griffith, Hanwood, Yenda area finding work on various farms. Barry was a hard worker and as a young teenager he would ride his push bike 14 kms to work at Navin’s Dry Cleaners, setting rabbit or yabby traps on his way and collecting the catch on the way home. While working he saved up to buy his first fishing rod which he still has, and a gun which he would ride up the main street of Griffith on his bike with it over the handlebars and nobody blinked an eye. The family were split up when Barry’s mother Joan passed away at the age of 42yrs. Barry went to live at Kamarah with his Aunty Grace and her family where he got some work in Ardlethan, Barry served as a building the swimming pool and various other projects in the area before gaining full time rifleman with A Company, employment as a Tin Dresser at Ardlethan Tin Mine where he worked until he went into the army 6 RAR, in South Vietnam in 1968. He was trained in jungle warfare and deployed to Vietnam in 1969, he met a lot of great from 8 May 1969 to 12 mates during his time in the Army. May 1970

HATS Journal 22 This is where Fay came into his life through family connections, she started writing to Barry through his army days and sent many, many letters while Barry was in Vietnam (and still has a big pile kept from all those years). The friendship continued and they married in 1972. On return from Vietnam in 1970, Barry returned to work in the Tin Mine and stayed until it closed in 1986. Then began Garden and Maintenance work at Ardlethan Central School where he worked up until he retired in 2004 due to ill health. Barry was a keen gardener. Their first daughter Cassy was born in 1975, followed by Danielle in 1980 closely followed by twins- Laura and Samantha in 1982. Barry began to slow down about 10 years ago, got very tired and slowly deteriorated, he never complained and kept his sense of humour. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him. Condolences from the management and members of the I.S.A.A. have been extended to Fay and the Duncan family. LEST WE FORGET.

SHANE FRANCIS DOBSON RAAF Service: A317339 Enlistment Date: 4/4/1966 Discharge Date: 4/4/1975 Born: 5/7/1948 Date of Death: 3/11/2018 We are sad to report the recent death of one of our members, Shane Dobson. We (Bob and Gladys) were there along with all of Shane’s family and friends to say farewell to him at the Wagga Wagga Lawn Cemetery on 12th November 2018. It was a moving and tearful ceremony as so many knew of Shane’s quiet and thoughtful demeanour, and especially his love for his family and grandchildren, His widow, Geri, said that Shane can now rest in peace since spending the past three years battling his cancer illness. I would like to thank Shane’s son Bernard for passing on some information on his father’s early life. “Dad grew up in Charlton Victoria. He boarded at Assumption College and left to join the Air Force right after school. In the RAAF he was an aircraft mechanic. He served in Malaya with 3 Squadron during the Vietnam War era. Shane was known as “the Painter” to his fellow airmen as, amongst other things for his mates, he used to paint a car a week (i.e when not fixing aircraft). Even though he told us many interesting stories of his time there, we found that the experience of war had changed him. My uncle recalled that when he collected Dad from Essendon airport when he returned from his posting, he said that Dad was a different man, and very reserved. After his discharge from the Air Force Dad put his service days behind him the best he could and got on with life. His last posting on discharge was in Wagga Wagga and it was here where he stayed. He transferred his skills with Super Sabres and Mirage Fighters to become a motor mechanic. It was as a self-employed “motor mechanic” that most people here in Wagga Wagga would have known Shane over the past 40 years working down in Mortimer Place. My mother Geri and Dad met after he left the Air Force. Mum was working as a nurse at the time. I recall hearing the story of their wedding day when the bridal car which was Dad’s prized rocket red 1966 Dodge Dart – it broke down before it even made it to St. Michaels Cathedral. I can imagine my Dad in his wedding suit, sleeves rolled up and elbows deep in the engine bay. Dad started to open up in the end. He’d talk to mum about his life, his joys, his fears, but never his regrets. He fought that cancer for longer than any doctor thought possible. He lasted three years when he was originally given only three months to live. It was his strength of spirit and the love he had for all of us that kept him going.” Special condolences have been extended to all the Dobson family from the Integrated Servicepeople’s Association of Australia together with a presentation gift from the I.S.A.A. of an embroidered flag in a presentation box in memory of Shane’s service to his country. REST IN PEACE SHANE - LEST WE FORGET.
