  • Village of Algonquin Annual Budget: FY 16/17
Annual Budget May 1, 2016 - April 30, 2017 Adopted April 5, 2016 A Glimpse into Algonquin’s History… The Village of Algonquin was settled in 1834 with the arrival of Samuel Gillian, the first settler in McHenry County. Other early settlers were Dr. Cornish, Dr. Plumleigh, Eli Henderson, Alex Dawson, and William Jackson. The Village changed names several times in the early days; the names included Cornish Ferry, Cornishville, and Osceola. The name Algonquin was finally selected in 1847 as a suggestion from Samuel Edwards as a namesake for a ship he once owned. The Village was incorporated in 1890 and witnessed both commercial and recreational trade. Algonquin was a favorite vacation spot for residents of Chicago. Nestled in the foothills of the Fox River Valley, Algonquin became known as the “Gem of the Fox River Valley.” The first Village Hall was constructed in 1906 at 2 South Main Street and throughout the years housed fire protection, library, and school services for the community as well as accommodating the municipal offices. The building served as Village Hall until the new Village Hall was completed in 1996. The original building is now called Historic Village Hall and serves as a community facility and meeting location. A highlight in Algonquin’s history was the period from 1906 to 1913, when the Algonquin Hill Climbs were held. The event was one of the earliest organized auto racing events held in the United States. Algonquin had a population of about 600 residents at that time and the annual hill climbs would bring crowds in excess of 25,000 to the Village.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 18, 2014 CONTACT: Mayor’s Press Office 312.744.3334 [email protected] MAYOR EMANUEL ANNOUNCES THE SECOND EXPANSION OF RETROFIT CHICAGO’S COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS INITIATIVE 16 additional facilities commit to 20 percent energy efficiency improvement within five years; current participants have achieved seven percent energy reduction to-date Marking another milestone in the City’s efforts to accelerate energy efficiency, Mayor Rahm Emanuel today announced the further expansion of Retrofit Chicago’s Commercial Buildings Initiative. The new building participants, including 11 higher education facilities, four commercial office buildings, and one cultural institution, have committed to at least 20 percent energy efficiency improvement within five years. This announcement expands the total program reach to 48 buildings and 37 million square feet, making Retrofit Chicago’s Commercial Buildings Initiative one of the largest private sector voluntary efficiency programs in the country. “Retrofit Chicago participants are leading a rising private sector energy movement that demonstrates how efficiency makes good business sense and good sense for our environment,” said Mayor Emanuel. “These buildings’ operational and capital improvements are saving money, reducing carbon emissions, creating 21st century jobs, and lowering the cost of doing business in Chicago.” To-date, current program participants have collectively achieved a seven percent reduction in total source energy use, with accompanying annual energy cost savings of $2.5 million and greenhouse gas emissions reductions equivalent to removing 5,800 cars from the road. Upon reaching the 20 percent improvement target, all 48 building participants have potential to save more than 150 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, while creating hundreds of local jobs in the growing clean energy economy.

  • The Unladylike Ladies of Roller Derby?: How Spectators, Players and Derby Wives Do and Redo Gender and Heteronormativity in All-Female Roller Derby
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by White Rose E-theses Online The Unladylike Ladies of Roller Derby?: How Spectators, Players and Derby Wives Do and Redo Gender and Heteronormativity in All-Female Roller Derby Megan Geneva Murray PhD The University of York Women’s Studies January 2012 Abstract All-female roller derby is a rapidly growing full-contact sport played on quad roller skates, with a highly popularized punk, feminine, sexual and tough aesthetic. Utilising theories on the institution of heterosexuality, I conducted a qualitative study on all-female roller derby which evaluated the way in which derby aligns with or challenges heteronormativity. In order to approach this question, I analysed, firstly, thirty-eight interviews with spectators, and twelve with players about their interactions with spectators. Secondly, I interviewed twenty-six players about the phenomenon of “derby wives,” a term used to describe particular female friendships in roller derby. My findings relate the complex relationship between players and spectators by focusing on: (i) spectators’ interpretations of the dress, pseudonyms, and identities of players, as well as the ways in which they were actively involved in doing gender through their discussions of all-female, coed, and all-male roller derby; (ii) players’ descriptions of their interactions with spectators, family members, romantic partners, friends and strangers, regarding roller derby. Additionally, I address the reformulation of the role “wife” to meet the needs of female players within the community, and “derby wives” as an example of Adrienne Rich’s (1980) “lesbian continuum.” “Derby girls” are described as “super heroes” and “rock stars.” Their pseudonyms are believed to help them “transform” once they take to the track.
