Energy : The Governor of Tommorow’s world Harvesting, Storing and Recycling Par Mateo Acosta As we are watching that the world run out of oil, we also are watching the environment run out of time in terms of energy consumption. The competitiveness of our society makes the demand for energy grow at an exponential rate. This is the reason why the world always needs to produce more energy. But what if this increa- sing energy demand could be tackled not only by producing more energy, but also by efficiently using every tiny watt available? Energy waste is an epidemic : The most striking example being the buildings we use in our daily lives. During the summer, most of the thermal transfer received by a building is lost, whe- reas during the winter we could use that energy to heat the building instead of wasting money and resources. At the very least, one should try to save as much energy as possible by applying proper insulation and consuming efficiently. It's easy to do, and every critic does it, from the film reviewers in the newspaper to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. But you and I, and those same directors, all know that it takes a video village to bring a film from the page to the screen to the stage accepting an award. Personally, I think it's the editors that get the shortest shrift in these cases. But the person who's often just as responsible as a director for how a film looks and feels is the cinematographer. Which is what makes the partnership between they and the director so crucial in filmmaking. If a director is lucky, they form a bond with one for most of their oeuvre. Paul Thomas Anderson and Robert Elswit. Spielberg and Janusz Kamiński. Christopher Nolan and Wally Pfister. And sometimes you'll get some cinematography polyamory. Oliver Stone, Quentin Tarantino, and Martin Scorsese share Robert Richardson. Of course a counterpoint to this film paper is that Kathryn Bigelow has worked with many different cinematographers over the years. Raoul Walsh to Attend Opening of Retrospective Tribute at Museum
The Museum of Modern Art jl west 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modernart NO. 34 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE RAOUL WALSH TO ATTEND OPENING OF RETROSPECTIVE TRIBUTE AT MUSEUM Raoul Walsh, 87-year-old film director whose career in motion pictures spanned more than five decades, will come to New York for the opening of a three-month retrospective of his films beginning Thursday, April 18, at The Museum of Modern Art. In a rare public appearance Mr. Walsh will attend the 8 pm screening of "Gentleman Jim," his 1942 film in which Errol Flynn portrays the boxing champion James J. Corbett. One of the giants of American filmdom, Walsh has worked in all genres — Westerns, gangster films, war pictures, adventure films, musicals — and with many of Hollywood's greatest stars — Victor McLaglen, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fair banks, Mae West, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Marlene Dietrich and Edward G. Robinson, to name just a few. It is ultimately as a director of action pictures that Walsh is best known and a growing body of critical opinion places him in the front rank with directors like Ford, Hawks, Curtiz and Wellman. Richard Schickel has called him "one of the best action directors...we've ever had" and British film critic Julian Fox has written: "Raoul Walsh, more than any other legendary figure from Hollywood's golden past, has truly lived up to the early cinema's reputation for 'action all the way'...." Walsh's penchant for action is not surprising considering he began his career more than 60 years ago as a stunt-rider in early "westerns" filmed in the New Jersey hills. -

Background. In Executive Order 13934 of July 3, 2020 (Building and Rebuilding Monuments to American Heroes), I made it the policy of the United States to establish a statuary park named the National Garden of American Heroes (National Garden). To begin the process of building this new monument to our country’s greatness, I established the Interagency Task Force for Building and Rebuilding Monuments to American Heroes (Task Force) and directed its members to plan for construction of the National Garden. The Task Force has advised me it has completed the first phase of its work and is prepared to move forward. This order revises Executive Order 13934 and provides additional direction for the Task Force. Sec. 2. Purpose. The chronicles of our history show that America is a land of heroes. As I announced during my address at Mount Rushmore, the gates of a beautiful new garden will soon open to the public where the legends of America’s past will be remembered. The National Garden will be built to reflect the awesome splendor of our country’s timeless exceptionalism. It will be a place where citizens, young and old, can renew their vision of greatness and take up the challenge that I gave every American in my first address to Congress, to ‘‘[b]elieve in yourselves, believe in your future, and believe, once more, in America.’’ Across this Nation, belief in the greatness and goodness of America has come under attack in recent months and years by a dangerous anti-American extremism that seeks to dismantle our country’s history, institutions, and very identity. -

Journalists and biographers and film historians have been dipping W into Bergman’s life (1915–1982) so relentlessly for so long that it is easy to forget that it wasn’t always in the public domain. The woman’s career, off and on screen, started being dissected so minutely so many decades ago that just about the only survivors from all those labors are her children and a hand- ful of actors from the already-41-year-old Murder on the Orient Express. In short, and though many of us are loath to admit it, the world of Ingrid Bergman seems to have warp-sped away from us to distances we might not have thought possible. It may not be as remote as Planet Garbo, but it is still out there, back in that century they used to call the 20th with an air of self-satisfaction making it sound like the tiniest of steps before infinity. Summer on the Mountain An Interview with Cinematographer Robert Elswit By Bridgette Bates In the words of Sundance Institute's Executive Director Ken Brecher, "One can learn to love eating in a tent." Tent dining is a quintessential experience of the Sundance Labs where Lab Fellows and Creative Advisors gather in the mountains of Utah each summer for what participants have affectionately called summer camp for artists. During this past June, the Feature Film Program under the direction of Michelle Satter hosted the Directors Lab, which offers eight filmmakers the supportive environment to develop new work under the supervision of experts in the field. The Insider sat down in the dining tent with a rogue chipmunk and Academy-Award winning cinematographer Robert Elswit to talk about his role as a Creative Advisor in this landscape of fresh air and fresh perspective. Some of Elswit's most recent DP work includes: There Will Be Blood, Michael Clayton, Syriana, Good Night and Good Luck, Punch Drunk Love, Magnolia, and Boogie Nights. Insider: From a Creative Advisor's perspective what is like working with the filmmakers at the Directors Lab? RE: I love coming here because of all the things the Fellows deal with when they start working on a project. All the basic elements that they are coming to grips with in terms of narrative filmmaking and storytelling; it reconnects me with basic stuff. Yet at the same time because the projects are so unusual and so varied and the people that they pick to come up here are so bright, I learn more in the Advisors meetings and interacting on sets than I do in three or four years of going from movie to movie.
