Ying Yang Twins have a long history of chart topping hip hop hits: from their collaboration with Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz on "Get Low" to their Grammy nominated "Wait (the Whisper Song)", the group has been a fixture on the Billboard charts, video channels, hip hop radio airwaves, clubs and fans computers since the beginning of their career. Brobbey ASSOCIATE NEWS EDITOR A small crowd of about 25 stu- dents attended the Dormitory Council elections meeting that selected Sarah C. Hopp ’08 and James T. Albrecht ’08 as president and executive vice president, respectively. The meeting was held last night at the East Campus Talbot lounge. Six other DormCon positions were also selected during the meeting (see the table on page 14 for final results). Bexley Hall and Next House were not represented at the elections. “I have every confidence [the new officers] will carry DormCon through the next year with energy and enthu- siasm,” outgoing DormCon President David A. Twerking and Cultural Appropriation
Twerking and Cultural Appropriation: Miley Cyrus’ Display of Racial Ignorance Shereen Zink Abstract Miley Cyrus’ recent habit of twerking has sparked debate over whether the pop star is misappropriating African American culture; some even going so far as to accuse her of racism. This paper reviews the literature that exists in the public sphere on the topic, and delves into a scholarly analysis of Cyrus’ actions, statements, and the implications they have. My own post-analysis interpretation of the issue is addressed in the concluding paragraphs. Ultimately, twerking’s political context, and Cyrus’ lack of regard for said context, suggest that she is perpetuating harmful stereotypes about black women while her own white privilege allows her to maintain her integrity. Cyrus may not be intentionally exploiting black culture, but she is certainly communicating more than she may have bargained for. The public debate over Miley Cyrus’ twerking is certainly an interesting one. Her actions in her recent music videos, and her 2013 Video Music Awards performance, have left her at the center of a race issue. By styling herself after “ratchet” culture—a term generally considered an insult to African American women—and by misrepresenting an element of African American culture; Cyrus has sparked debate about cultural appropriation and racism in popular culture. The arguments range from convicting Cyrus of “calculated racism” to suggesting that it is racist to call Cyrus racist (Julious, 2013; Yates, 2013). While Cyrus 15 MUSe Vol. 3(1) May 2017 herself may not be racist, both her use of marginalized cultural cues to exert her new sexual image, and her portrayal of black women in her performances, have racial implications.
