Economic Impacts of Climate Change on Teff Production In ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON TEFF PRODUCTION IN LUME AND GIMBICHU DISTRICTS OF CENTRAL ETHIOPIA DEGEFU KEBEDE BAYECHA A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE IN AGRICULTURAL AND APPLIED ECONOMICS OF SOKOINE UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE. MOROGORO, TANZANIA. 2013 i ABSTRACT This study was carried out with the main objective of analyzing the economic impacts of climate change on teff production in central Ethiopia. Specific objectives of the study were: i) To analyze the relationship of income from teff (Eragrostis tef) production with biophysical and socioeconomic variables, ii) To determine the marginal impact of temperature and rainfall on income from teff production, iii) To predict a range of potential future impacts on teff production under a mid-range emission scenario. The study used data collected from a randomly selected sample of 150 smallholder teff producers in Lume and Gimbichu districts from March 2013 to May 2013. The study assessed descriptively farmers‟ perceptions on climate change in terms of long-term change in climate variables including temperature and rainfall, and adaptations undertaken in teff production. The study used a cross sectional Ricardian approach to analyse the impact of climate change on net revenue from teff production. Net revenue per hectare per year for teff crop was regressed against climate predictor, biophysical and socioeconomic control variables. The results indicate that predictor variables had a significant influence on net farm returns from production. The marginal impact analysis revealed that temperature will have a significant (p < 0.01) negative impact on annual net revenue from teff. Rainfall will have a positive impact on net revenue from teff production. Based on a mid-range IPCC‟s emission A1B scenario for the country, the predicted future climate change will adversely impact on net revenue from teff for all time periods of near, mid and far century. Box 1176, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia *Corresponding author Abstract Household structure and livelihood sources were studied in Eastern Shoa Zone, in Lake Ziway. Lake Ziway is located in central Ethiopia and the lake is drained by Meki River from the west and Katar River from the east; both feeding the lake at rift floor and then outflow to Bulbula River in southwest. Data were collected during July (2013) through to May (2014) using rapid rural appraisals, field observations and in depth interviews through field surveys. The study identified people’s livelihood sources, analyzed household structure and household participation in different commodities was also carried out. The findings indicate that average family size in the three study sites (Site A, B and E) was similar. On the other hand the average family size of study site C and D was very similar which accounts 3 and 3.8 respectively. In all sampling sites male was representing higher proportion and aged between 18 to 60 years of age represented the highest proportion of the fishermen households and accounts 42 to 46%. Fishery, Livestock, Field crops and Horticulture were the major livelihood sources in the study area that engaged by fishermen.

O. Box 144, Ethiopia. Received 22 June, 2019; Accepted 20 September, 2019 Woodlands of Ethiopia are estimated to be around 70%. Unfortunately, this woodland is seriously under threats, mostly linked to human interference, livestock and climate change. To overcome these problems, protected woodlands were implemented in different parts of the country including Dugda Woreda Giraba KorkeAdii Kebele. However, the perception of local community towards protected woodlands was not studied. As a result, the main purpose of this study was to assess the perception of local community toward protected woodland at Dugda Woreda, East Shoa Zone, Oromia, Ethiopia. Before deciding the method of data collection, a reconnaissance survey was undertaken to obtain the impressions of the study site conditions and select sampling sites. A purposive sampling technique was employed to select the kebele from the Woreda. The sample size of households for the survey was determined by the proportional sampling method. A total of 138 households were selected for the survey; of these, 61 households are poor, 53 households are medium in terms of income and 21 households are rich. Semi-structured questionnaires were prepared for household interviews and the data were analyzed using Microsoft excel and SPSS and results were presented using descriptive statistics.

A total of 514 sera were collected (from187 commercial chickens and 327 local chickens) and tested using an indirect enzyme linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA) to detect antibodies against M. gallisepticum. The overall seropreva- lence of M. gallisepticum was 49.4% (254/514). A statistically significant asso- ciation (p<0.05) was observed in prevalence between chicken type with preva- lence of 64.5% in local and 23% in commercial chickens. Variation in prevalence was observed among the three commercial farms, the highest being in farm-B (46.8%) and the lowest in farm-C (4.25%). Prevalence in local chickens was sig- nificantly highest in Lume (72.7%) and lowest in Ada’a (47.5%) p<0.05( ). Age was significantly associated with sero-prevalence (p<0.05). Prevalence was 67.3% in layers of (18 to 76 weeks) and 0% in layer chicks of (1 to 8 weeks old).

    CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Introduction The Study on “Socio-Economy and Institutions” comprises (i) current conditions of socio-economy and institutions concerning the Project, (ii) identification of constraints and (iii) proposed institutional set-up for implementation of the Master Plan. To promote successful irrigation and rural development in the Meki area, the institutional strengthening of OIDA and other concerned organizations is essential. In addition, reinforcement of the staff capability is also required. The Study was firstly made through an overall assessment of OIDA, the district administration, the peasant associations and community based farmers’ organizations to prepare the institutional building program within the framework of the Master Plan. The organizational plans consist of three (3) aspects, namely organizational development, capacity building and financial management. 1.2 Study Area The study area administratively falls in Dugda Bora Wareda (district) in East Shewa Zone of Oromia Region. It is located in the center of Oromia Region, that is the largest region in Ethiopia with a total coverage of 353,007 km2 or 32% of the national territory and provides livelihood to 22.35 million or 35% of the total national population. The main urban center of the area is Meki town located at 130 km south of Addis Ababa. The S/W seletced the proposed irrigation development area situated on the bottomland of the Rift Valley (El. 1,650 m) with a total area of 400 km2 extending to the north of the Meki town within Dugda Bora Wareda.
