PREFACE BACKGROUND OF THE INSTITUTION E.G.S Pillay Engineering College is a pioneering Engineering College, established in the year 1995, at Nagapattinam, which is a typical rural and backward area of Tamil Nadu. The institution was created by Late.G.S.Pillay. He was born on 2nd January, 1930 in a poor family. He was deprived of education due to his family circumstance. He went to Seychelles when he was 15 years old in search of employment for his livelihood. Through his sincere, hard and dedicated work, he started his own business in Seychelles in the year 1960 and from then on, he consistantly scaled newer heights in his business ventures in that soil .His Dream of providing education to scores of underprivileged rural youth, paved the way to establish the following educational institutions in his birth place. He lead a simple life having admirable qualities, exhibiting patriotism, kindness to fellowmen, service to the people in times of natural disasters, contribution to create amenities for common people, spirituality related works etc,. whichearned him name, fame and citations like, Doctor of Philosophy (Honoris causa), Chavalier and Man of Spiritualism. The E.G.S Pillay Engineering College, Nagapattinam was the first institution established by Mr.G.S.Pillay in the year 1995 aiming at providingworld class educationin engineering,fosteringindustrial prosperity and aiding the socio-economic development of the nation at large. The institution was affiliated to Bharathidasan University, Trichy during the years 1995 to 2006 and afterwards the affiliation is being accorded by the Anna University. The college is located in the significant pilgrimage zone of south India covering Velankanni, Nagore and neighbour state Karaikal-Thirunallar.It is situated close to East Coast Road (ECR) between Karaikal and Nagapattinam and 2 km from Nagore. The nearest Railway 1 station is Nagapattinam which has direct link with Chennai and Trichy. The nearest airport is Trichy which is 120 km away and that of Chennai is 350 km away. The college is stepping into 19th year of excellent service in the year of 2014. Over these years, the college has attained commendable growth by developing itself in every aspect, in terms of academic programs, infrastructure development, staff recruitment, students admission, project and research activities, Transport, Training and Placement, centralized library, Sports and games etc,. The college offers 6 UG degree program in B.E/B.Tech and 6 PG degree programs in M.E including MBA and MCA. The administration of the college is looked after by the Secretary of the Trust assisted by the advisor Dr.R.Karunanithi. The academic programs and the day to day activities are implemented by the Principal, Dr.S.Ramabalan, Registrar, Prof.B.Saravanakumaran and Prof.V.Mohan, Vice-Principal. The college adopts Participatory Management Principle and the administration is a complete decentralized set up with Heads of Departments for academic matters and specified administrative heads for developmental activities. The college has the required well qualified and experienced faculty members who are continuously encouraged with incentives and promotions. Senior faculty members are permitted to pursue Doctoral programs for gaining knowledge and for career growth. For the promotion of R&D activities in the College, exclusive R&D Department has been created headed by the Direcor, Dr. M.K.Mishra. It is a regular feature in this college that our staff members are successful in getting several R&D, Faculty Development and other programs sanctioned by AICTE, New Delhi, Anna University and other Institutions. The college has organized 5 International conferences and 10 National conferences, Workshops, etc., during the last four years. The College has been selected by Anna University as a Nodal Centre 3 forQuality Improvement Cell. The Advisor,Dr.R.Karunanithi who was holding the post of Principal served as Member of the Academic Council, Anna University, Trichy.

Introduction Number of taluks 8 i) Geographical location of the district Number of revenue 906 villages Thanjavur district lies between 9º 50’ and 11º 25’ North latitude and 78º 45’ and Revenue Taluk 79º 25’ East longtitude. It is bounded on the villages North by Thiruchirapalli and Cuddalore districts, on the East by Tiruvarur and Kumbakonam 124 Nagapattinam districts, on the South by Palk Orathanadu 125 Strait and Pudukottai district and on the west by Pudukkottai district and Tiruchirapalli Papanasam 120 districts. Total geographical area of the district is 3,602.86 sq.km. This constitutes Pattukkottai 175 just 2.77 % of the area of the State.     NAGAPATINAM DISTRICT : ENVIRONMENTAL PROFILE In this chapter, the basic facts of the study area have been given with the view to have area awareness about the study area. 3.1 Geographical Location of the District The Nagapattinam district lies on the east coast to the south of Cuddalore district and another part of the Nagapattinam district lies to the south of Karaikkal and Tiruvarur districts. Its northern boundary is about 75 Km southwards from the Head Quarters of the Cuddalore district. Thanjavur district and Tiruvarur district flank it on the west and on the south and east it is bordered by the Bay of Bengal. The district lies between 10.25and 11.40North Longitude and 7649and 80.01East longitude. The general geological formation of the district is plain and coastal. The Cauvery and its offshoots are the principal rivers. Rising in the Coorg Mountains, this river bifurcates about nine miles at the west of Trichy into two branches, of which the northern one takes the name of Coleroen and the southern one retains that of the Cauvery. All along the course of Cauvery and its dis-tributaries, on both the banks numerous narrow strips of river porombokes lands called Paduagais that are cut up by countless patta lands. These strips ranging in width from about 3 metres to 100 meters are made up of bits of lands. Even though the Padugais and Poromboke lands are very dry they are very fertile. Flood banks of Cauvery and its dis-tributaries are away from the watercourses in the upper reaches here the river is wide and closer in the lower reaches and the river become narrow gradually.

Moreover healthy soils are not only more productive from an agricultural point of view, but they also provide other key ecosystem services. Maintaining a healthy level of SOC is essential to maintain or improve soil health and is explicitly mentioned in Global environmental facility strategy documents. Two thousand five hundred ninety surface soil samples from the entire 232257 ha. area which covers fifteen soil series of Nagapattinam district, Tamilnadu, India were analyzed to know the strength and mapping of soil organic pool. The standard procedure was used for the analysis. This study showed that Kutthalam taluk soils ranged between 0.20 and 0.26% with an average value of 0.23%, Mayiladuthurai taluk soil: min 0.14% max 0.49% with the mean value of 0.29%, Kilvelur taluk soils: min 0.29% max 0.57% mean value of 0.39%, Vedaranyam taluk: ranged between 0.21 and 0.37% with an average value of 0.28%, Nagapattinam taluk: ranged from 0.16% to 0.49% mean- 0.29%. Sirkali taluk soils: from 0.23% to 0.67% mean value - 0.43%, Tharangampadi Taluk OC level was ranged between 0.30% and 4.56% with the mean value of 1.51% and Thirukkuvalai taluk was varied from 0.19% to 0.65% with the mean value of 0.36%.

Geographic information system (GIS) has been applied in the study of dengue fever in Nagapattinam district with the help of generated risk values (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) and risk types (very low, low, medium, high and very high) for the variables registered dengue cases in 2012 and 2013, total population, house infested, container positive, primary health and sub-centres, rainfall (2012 and 2013), minimum and maximum temperature during 2012 and 2013, water stagnation areas in square kilometre and total risk. The present research investigates the epidemiology, ecology and prevalence of dengue in Nagapattinam district . Dengue starts with chills, headache, pain upon moving the eyes, and low backache. Painful aching in the legs and joints occurs during the first hours of illness.
