On the Status of the Geodesic Principle in Newtonian and Relativistic Physics1

Journal of Mathematical Physics 16(1), (1975)] provides a sense in which the geodesic principle has the status of a theorem in General Relativity (GR). I have recently shown that a similar theorem holds in the context of geometrized Newtonian gravitation (Newton- Cartan theory) [Weatherall, J. O. \The Motion of a Body in Newtonian Theories." Journal of Mathematical Physics 52(3), (2011)]. Here I compare the interpretations of these two the- orems. I argue that despite some apparent differences between the theorems, the status of the geodesic principle in geometrized Newtonian gravitation is, mutatis mutandis, strikingly similar to the relativistic case. 1 Introduction The geodesic principle is the central principle of General Relativity (GR) that describes the inertial motion of test particles. It states that free massive test point particles traverse timelike geodesics. There is a long-standing view, originally due to Einstein, that the geodesic principle has a special status in GR that arises because it can be understood as a theorem, rather than a postulate, of the theory. (It turns out that capturing the geodesic principle as a theorem in GR is non-trivial, but a result due to Bob Geroch and Pong Soo Jang (1975) 1Thank you to David Malament and Jeff Barrett for helpful comments on a previous version of this paper and for many stimulating conversations on this topic. -

Introductory Lectures on Quantum Field Theory a b L. Some of them are conceptual and some more practical. They have been se- lected because they appear frequently in current applications to particle physics and string theory. 1 Introduction These notes are based on lectures delivered by L.A.-G. at the 3rd CERN–Latin-American School of High- Energy Physics, Malargüe, Argentina, 27 February–12 March 2005, at the 5th CERN–Latin-American School of High-Energy Physics, Medellín, Colombia, 15–28 March 2009, and at the 6th CERN–Latin- American School of High-Energy Physics, Natal, Brazil, 23 March–5 April 2011. The audience on all three occasions was composed to a large extent of students in experimental high-energy physics with an important minority of theorists. In nearly ten hours it is quite difficult to give a reasonable introduction to a subject as vast as quantum field theory. For this reason the lectures were intended to provide a review of those parts of the subject to be used later by other lecturers. Although a cursory acquaintance with the subject of quantum field theory is helpful, the only requirement to follow the lectures is a working knowledge of quantum mechanics and special relativity. The guiding principle in choosing the topics presented (apart from serving as introductions to later courses) was to present some basic aspects of the theory that present conceptual subtleties. -

Malament Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science 3151 Social Science Plaza University of California, Irvine Irvine, CA 92697-5100 [email protected] 1 Introduction General relativity incorporates a number of basic principles that correlate space- time structure with physical objects and processes. Among them is the Geodesic Principle: Free massive point particles traverse timelike geodesics. One can think of it as a relativistic version of Newton’s first law of motion. It is often claimed that the geodesic principle can be recovered as a theorem in general relativity. Indeed, it is claimed that it is a consequence of Einstein’s ∗I am grateful to Robert Geroch for giving me the basic idea for the counterexample (proposition 3.2) that is the principal point of interest in this note. Thanks also to Harvey Brown, Erik Curiel, John Earman, David Garfinkle, John Manchak, Wayne Myrvold, John Norton, and Jim Weatherall for comments on an earlier draft. 1 ab equation (or of the conservation principle ∇aT = 0 that is, itself, a conse- quence of that equation). These claims are certainly correct, but it may be worth drawing attention to one small qualification. Though the geodesic prin- ciple can be recovered as theorem in general relativity, it is not a consequence of Einstein’s equation (or the conservation principle) alone. Other assumptions are needed to drive the theorems in question. One needs to put more in if one is to get the geodesic principle out. My goal in this short note is to make this claim precise (i.e., that other assumptions are needed). -

He was educated at the Universities of the former URSS (in Tomsk, Moscow, Dubna and Kiev) and reveived his PhD in theoretical physics in 1994 at ”Al. I. Cuza” University, Ia¸si, Romania. He was employed as principal senior researcher, as- sociate and full professor and obtained a number of NATO/UNESCO grants and fellowships at various academic institutions in R. Moldova, Romania, Germany, United Kingdom, Italy, Portugal and USA. He has published in English two scientific monographs, a university text–book and more than hundred scientific works (in English, Russian and Romanian) on (super) gravity and string theories, extra–dimension and brane gravity, black hole physics and cosmolgy, exact solutions of Einstein equations, spinors and twistors, anistoropic stochastic and kinetic processes and thermodynamics in curved spaces, generalized Finsler (super) geometry and gauge gravity, quantum field and geometric methods in condensed matter physics. -

Chapter 5 ANGULAR MOMENTUM AND ROTATIONS In classical mechanics the total angular momentum L~ of an isolated system about any …xed point is conserved. The existence of a conserved vector L~ associated with such a system is itself a consequence of the fact that the associated Hamiltonian (or Lagrangian) is invariant under rotations, i.e., if the coordinates and momenta of the entire system are rotated “rigidly” about some point, the energy of the system is unchanged and, more importantly, is the same function of the dynamical variables as it was before the rotation. Such a circumstance would not apply, e.g., to a system lying in an externally imposed gravitational …eld pointing in some speci…c direction. Thus, the invariance of an isolated system under rotations ultimately arises from the fact that, in the absence of external …elds of this sort, space is isotropic; it behaves the same way in all directions. Not surprisingly, therefore, in quantum mechanics the individual Cartesian com- ponents Li of the total angular momentum operator L~ of an isolated system are also constants of the motion. The di¤erent components of L~ are not, however, compatible quantum observables. Indeed, as we will see the operators representing the components of angular momentum along di¤erent directions do not generally commute with one an- other. Thus, the vector operator L~ is not, strictly speaking, an observable, since it does not have a complete basis of eigenstates (which would have to be simultaneous eigenstates of all of its non-commuting components). This lack of commutivity often seems, at …rst encounter, as somewhat of a nuisance but, in fact, it intimately re‡ects the underlying structure of the three dimensional space in which we are immersed, and has its source in the fact that rotations in three dimensions about di¤erent axes do not commute with one another. -

SEMISIMPLE WEAKLY SYMMETRIC PSEUDO{RIEMANNIAN MANIFOLDS ZHIQI CHEN AND JOSEPH A. WOLF Abstract. We develop the classification of weakly symmetric pseudo{riemannian manifolds G=H where G is a semisimple Lie group and H is a reductive subgroup. We derive the classification from the cases where G is compact, and then we discuss the (isotropy) representation of H on the tangent space of G=H and the signature of the invariant pseudo{riemannian metric. As a consequence we obtain the classification of semisimple weakly symmetric manifolds of Lorentz signature (n − 1; 1) and trans{lorentzian signature (n − 2; 2). 1. Introduction There have been a number of important extensions of the theory of riemannian symmetric spaces. Weakly symmetric spaces, introduced by A. Selberg [8], play key roles in number theory, riemannian geometry and harmonic analysis. See [11]. Pseudo{riemannian symmetric spaces, including semisimple symmetric spaces, play central but complementary roles in number theory, differential geometry and relativity, Lie group representation theory and harmonic analysis. Much of the activity there has been on the Lorentz cases, which are of particular interest in physics. Here we study the classification of weakly symmetric pseudo{ riemannian manifolds G=H where G is a semisimple Lie group and H is a reductive subgroup. We apply the result to obtain explicit listings for metrics of riemannian (Table 5.1), lorentzian (Table 5.2) and trans{ lorentzian (Table 5.3) signature. The pseudo{riemannian symmetric case was analyzed extensively in the classical paper of M. Berger [1]. Our analysis in the weakly symmetric setting starts with the classifications of Kr¨amer[6], Brion [2], Mikityuk [7] and Yakimova [16, 17] for the weakly symmetric riemannian manifolds. -

221B Lecture Notes Quantum Field Theory (a.k.a. Second Quantization) 1 Quantum Field Theory Why quantum field theory? We know quantum mechanics works perfectly well for many systems we had looked at already. Then why go to a new formalism? The following few sections describe motivation for the quantum field theory, which I introduce as a re-formulation of multi-body quantum mechanics with identical physics content. 1.1 Limitations of Multi-body Schr¨odinger Wave Func- tion We used totally anti-symmetrized Slater determinants for the study of atoms, molecules, nuclei. Already with the number of particles in these systems, say, about 100, the use of multi-body wave function is quite cumbersome. Mention a wave function of an Avogardro number of particles! Not only it is completely impractical to talk about a wave function with 6 × 1023 coordinates for each particle, we even do not know if it is supposed to have 6 × 1023 or 6 × 1023 + 1 coordinates, and the property of the system of our interest shouldn’t be concerned with such a tiny (?) difference. Another limitation of the multi-body wave functions is that it is incapable of describing processes where the number of particles changes. For instance, think about the emission of a photon from the excited state of an atom. The wave function would contain coordinates for the electrons in the atom and the nucleus in the initial state. The final state contains yet another particle, photon in this case. But the Schr¨odinger equation is a differential equation acting on the arguments of the Schr¨odingerwave function, and can never change the number of arguments. -
