Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips October 12, 2013 Sabres-Blackhawks Preview By Nicolino DiBenedetto Associated Press October 12, 2013 The Buffalo Sabres are off to their worst start in 14 years. Facing the reigning Stanley Cup champions on the road isn't likely to change that. The Sabres attempt to avoid a sixth straight defeat Saturday night when they meet the Chicago Blackhawks. Buffalo (0-4-1) hasn't endured a worst start to a season since going 0-5-2 to begin 1999-2000. The Sabres have shown few signs of ending their struggles, getting outscored 14-5 while going 2 for 18 on the power play. "We have guys in here that can make plays," goaltender Ryan Miller said. "We just have to get past this little hump we're having trouble with and you can't just work hard, get a puck and not do anything with it. We have to start doing things with it." Buffalo didn't do much Thursday, giving up three first-period goals in a 4-1 home loss to Columbus. Thomas Vanek and Cody Hodgson have been among the few offensive bright spots with four points each over the past three games. Those two have combined for eight of the team's 13 points this season. Vanek, the captain for home games, had team highs of 20 goals and 41 points in 38 games last season. He's been limited to two assists in four career visits to Chicago. Hodgson has four points in four meetings with the Blackhawks, who have won three straight games versus Buffalo, including the last two at the United Center.

  • Flying Wasn't Fun, and for a Number of Years It Fit Right in with Everything
F IFTY IS A BIG NUMBER Flying wasn’t fun, and for a number of years it fit right in with everything else around the team. We just weren’t enjoying the game. For all three of those years that I hit the 50 mark, it was almost like if our line didn’t score we had no chance of winning the game. Billy and Danny Daoust and Tom Fergus, the three centres I played with over those years—I had great chemistry with all of them. But a lot of nights it felt like we were on our own. And I hated losing more than I liked winning. That’s the way I was as a kid; I didn’t like losing at anything. To put those seasons in historical perspective, a number of Leafs had gotten close to 50 in years past: Frank Mahovlich had his 48 goals, and then Lanny McDonald had seasons with 46, 47 and 43; Darryl had 45 one year. And then Gary Leeman scored 51 during the 1989–90 season. Dave Andreychuk became the third Leaf to do it, in 1992–93, although there’s an asterisk of sorts next to that one because he scored 29 of the goals with Buffalo, and then 25 with the Leafs over 83 games. The next season, he scored 53, all of them with the Leafs. So, just the three of us. So far. John Tavares, the current Leafs captain, had 47 in Toronto in 2018–19, and Auston Matthews had 47 and counting in 70 games, on pace for 55, when the 2019–20 season was paused by the 97 Vaiv_9780735280298_all_5p_r1.indd 97 2020-09-09 2:00 PM CATCH 22 COVID-19 virus.

LOUIS 5, Washington 2 Tampa Bay 6, LOS ANGELES 2 KUCHEROV NETS FOUR POINTS TO MAINTAIN ELUSIVE SCORING PACE Nikita Kucherov (1-3—4) posted at least four points for the fourth time this season to extend his overall point streak to 12 games (8-19—27), posting his seventh consecutive multi-point showing (6-15—21). He now leads the League with 20-49—69 at the midpoint of Tampa Bay’s season, marking the 53rd instance in NHL history of a player accumulating at least 69 points through 41 team games. This marks the eighth occurrence since 1993-94. * Kucherov is the second player this season to record multiple points in seven consecutive team games, joining Toronto’s Auston Matthews (10-6—16 in 7 GP from Oct. 3-15). The only other player in Tampa Bay history to achieve the feat is Vincent Lecavalier, who had multiple points in eight straight contests from Nov. 3-19, 2007 (7-14—21) - also the NHL’s last such run longer than seven games. * Kucherov has collected at least four points three times in his past five outings. Only three others have achieved that feat since 1996-97: Mario Lemieux in 1996-97 and 2001-02, Jaromir Jagr in 1998-99 and Nisse Ekman in 2005-06. * The 25-year-old has scored a goal in eight of his past nine outings, including an active five- game goal streak, to hit 20 goals for the fifth consecutive season.

  • Peak Performance and Contract Inefficiency in the National Hockey League
PEAK PERFORMANCE AND CONTRACT INEFFICIENCY IN THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE A THESIS Presented to The Faculty of the Department of Economics and Business The Colorado College In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Arts By Scott Winkler April 2013 PEAK PERFORMANCE AND CONTRACT INEFFICIENCY IN THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE Scott Winkler April 2013 Economics Abstract The purpose of this study is to determine what age National Hockey League (NHL) players have their best seasons and how this relates to their contract earnings. The hypothesis is that NHL players have their peak performance at age 27, which indicates that long-term contracts that exceed this age create inefficiency. The study will examine player productivity by taking 30 NHL players and evaluating their performance in the years leading up to age 27 as well as years that follow. Performance measures include average point production and the highest average ice-time per game. The study will also use two OLS (Ordinary Least Squares) regressions where the dependent variables are average time on ice per game and capital hit, both good indicators of how valuable a player is to his team, as well as several statistical independent variables such as points, games played and most importantly age. By gaining knowledge of peak performance, NHL organizations could better manage their teams by limiting long-term contracts to players and as a result lessen the inefficiency that exists in the market.
