The Gulella along with some pomatiids, probably related to assemblages reflect the composition of the continental extant genera, suggests that the modern African–Arabian mollusc fauna of the Palaeogene of Arabia, which, at that continental faunas can be partly traced back to Eocene time, formed parts of the southeastern Tethys coast. The Gómez-Alba palaeontological collection of the MGB-MCNB. We present the catalogue of the palaeontological collection belonging to the late Dr. Julio Gómez-Alba, former curator of Palaeontology at Barcelona’s Museum of Geology, now integrated in Barcelona’s Natural History Museum Consortium. He proposed the donation of his collection to the city of Barcelona in November 2010 and the Barcelona’s Institute of Culture (ICUB) accepted it on the 11th February 2011. Formed by 4.990 specimens and 25 batches, it is not the col- lection of a palaeontological researcher but that of a general palaeontologist. Many items in this collection were figured in a field guide authored by Gómez-Alba (1988) dealing with the fossils of Spain and Europe. The catalogue is, apart from some minor corrections, the literal transcription of the database originally associated to the collection that –since its acceptation– has neither been updated nor revised. Key words: catalogue, collection, palaeontology, Gómez-Alba, MGB-MCNB. Resumen GALLEMÍ, J., VICEDO, V., LÓPEZ, G. y TROYA, L. La colección paleontológica Gómez-Alba del MGB-MCNB. Published online at www.senckenberg.de/geologica-saxonica on 1 December 2014. Abstract Lutetiella n.gen. is proposed for Lutetiella hartkopfi n. sp. (type species) and L. conica (Prévost 1821) from the Middle Eocene (Lutetian) of the Upper Rhine Graben and Paris Basin, respectively. The protoconch microsculpture of L. hartkopfi n. sp. was occasionally preserved and proved to be a variant of the plesiomorphic hydrobioid pattern. The new genus is tentatively placed in Hydrobiidae. Problems in the classi- fication of hydrobioid fossils are discussed, arising from the dearth of distinguishing shell characters. Previous attributions of L. conica to Assiminea or Peringia are shown to be incorrect. The name Paludina conica Férussac 1814, a senior primary homonym of Paludina conica Prévost 1821, and denoting an unidentifiable hydrobioid, threatens the validity of the nameLutetiella conica (Prévost 1821) and should be suppressed.

In his formal plan for the institution, Joseph Henry outlined a program that included the following statement: "It is proposed to publish a series of reports, giving an account of the new discoveries in science, and of the changes made from year to year in all branches of knowledge." This theme of basic research has been adhered to through the years by thousands of titles issued in series publications under the Smithsonian imprint, commencing with Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge in 1848 and continuing with the following active series: Smithsonian Contributions to Anthropology Smithsonian Contributions to Botany Smithsonian Contributions to the Earth Sciences Smithsonian Contributions to the Marine Sciences Smithsonian Contributions to Paleobiology Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology Smithsonian FoUdife Studies Smithsonian Studies in Air and Space Smithsonian Studies in History and Technology In these series, the Institution publishes small papers and full-scale monographs that report the research and collections of its various museums and bureaux or of professional colleagues in the world o^ science and scholarship. The publications are distributed by mailing lists to libraries, universities, and similar institutions throughout the world. Papers or monographs submitted for series publication are received by the Smithsonian Institution Press, subject to its own review for format and style, only through departments of the various Smithsonian museums or bureaux, where the manuscripts are given substantive review.

  • Temporal and Latitudinal Trends in the Biodiversity of European Atlantic Cenozoic Gastropod (Mollusca) Faunas
Carnets de Géologie [Notebooks on Geology] - vol. 14, n° 14 Temporal and latitudinal trends in the biodiversity of European Atlantic Cenozoic gastropod (Mollusca) faunas. A base for the history of biogeographic provinces Pierre LOZOUET 1 Abstract: A general overview of the biodiversity of the marine fauna during the Tertiary period is de- veloped in the context of the biogeographical evolution of the European realm. This study combines a reappraisal of the literature with a unique first-hand source of data on the richest marine group (the gastropods) from over a 25 million year period (Early Oligocene to Late Miocene). In total the French deposits have yielded more than 10,000 species from the Eocene to the Upper Miocene. Evidence of significant bias in the fossil record is pointed out for the Palaeocene (Danian) and Upper Eocene (Pria- bonian). For the period considered (Palaeocene to Late Miocene, ca 50 million years) the second highest diversity is reported in the Late Oligocene. This study reveals also the importance of pre-Mioce- ne extinctions of genera. The Oligocene was when the latitudinal differentiation of the faunas was grea- test. The local generic gastropod richness ranges from 59 (Rupelian of Belgium) to 494 (Chattian of Aquitaine). A clear trend towards homogenization appears in the Late Oligocene which leads to the de- velopment of a vast biogeographical region named Euro-West Africa. This faunal evolutionary pattern has never been demonstrated before and is a novel feature of the biogeography of the Eastern-Atlantic region. Key Words: Biogeography; Tethys; extinction; France; Paleogene; Miocene; molluscs. Citation: LOZOUET P.

  • Synopsis of the Late Miocene Mollusc Fauna of the Classical Sections Richardhof and Eichkogel in the Vienna Basin
Arch. Molluskenkunde | 133 | (1/2) | 1–57 | 5 figs., 11 plates | Frankfurt am Main, 31.12.2004 Synopsis of the Late Miocene mollusc fauna of the classical sections Richardhof and Eichkogel in the Vienna Basin (Austria, Pannonian, MN 9-MN11) MATHIAS HARZHAUSER & HERBERT BINDER Abstract The Eichkogel and Richardhof sections represent two important reference faunas for the reconstruction of the Late Miocene continental mollusc faunas. New investigations with strong focus on the micro-vertebrate assemblages of the Pannonian in the Vienna Basin by G. DAXNER- HÖCK (NHMW) allow a rather precise dating of the Vallesian to Early Turolian faunas into the mammal zones MN 9 (samples Richardhof RH A/2, RH A/7), MN 10 (samples Richardhof Rh 1, Rh 3, Rh 5) and MN 11 (Eichkogel). The increase in material and the improved stratigraphic resolution of the formerly intermingled faunas - aside from the fact that the already published taxa are partly hidden in various papers dealing with special taxonomic problems - motivated us to produce a critical synopsis of the knowledge of these faunas. For the first time, the protoconch features are also documented for many of the discussed species. In total, 84 mollusc taxa are known from the sections. Of these, 71 are recorded from the Eichkogel section and 58 from the Richardhof section. Pseudamnicola hoeckae nov. sp., Granaria moedlingensis nov. sp., Janulus austriacus nov. sp. and Klikia (Apula) vindobonensis nov. sp. are introduced as new species. Keywords: Late Miocene, Pannonian, Vallesian, Early Turolian, non-marine molluscs, Vienna Basin, Lake Pannon. Kurzfassung Die terrestrischen und limnischen Molluskenfaunen der Fundpunkte Eichkogel und Richard- hof sind bedeutende Referenzfaunen des späten Miozäns in Mitteleuropa.
