SST Defies Industry, Defines New Music
Page 1 The San Diego Union-Tribune October 1, 1995 Sunday SST Defies Industry, Defines New Music By Daniel de Vise KNIGHT-RIDDER NEWSPAPERS DATELINE: LOS ALAMITOS, CALIF. Ten years ago, when SST Records spun at the creative center of rock music, founder Greg Ginn was living with six other people in a one-room rehearsal studio. SST music was whipping like a sonic cyclone through every college campus in the country. SST bands criss-crossed the nation, luring young people away from arenas and corporate rock like no other force since the dawn of punk. But Greg Ginn had no shower and no car. He lived on a few thousand dollars a year, and relied on public transportation. "The reality is not only different, it's extremely, shockingly different than what people imagine," Ginn said. "We basically had one place where we rehearsed and lived and worked." SST, based in the Los Angeles suburb of Los Alamitos, is the quintessential in- dependent record label. For 17 years it has existed squarely outside the corporate rock industry, releasing music and spoken-word performances by artists who are not much interested in making money. When an SST band grows restless for earnings or for broader success, it simply leaves the label. Founded in 1978 in Hermosa Beach, Calif., SST Records has arguably produced more great rock bands than any other label of its era. Black Flag, fast, loud and socially aware, was probably the world's first hardcore punk band. Sonic Youth, a blend of white noise and pop, is a contender for best alternative-rock band ever. -
13Th FLOOR ELEVATORS
13th FLOOR ELEVATORS With such a seminal album, it’s not surprising that the cover for The Psychedelic Sounds Of The 13th Floor Elevators (1966 : International Artists Artwork : John Cleveland) has been borrowed such a lot, often by psych upstarts (also leaning on the music) and CD compliers wanting some of the early sixties garage ambience to rub off on them. The result is a great display of primary colours. 1042 N. Vista Street #8, West Hollywood, CA 90046 • 323.845.9781 [email protected] Chris Isaacson Presents in association with The VFC Project has announced #Hash(tag) America at Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood on Monday, November 18, at 8:30pm. #Hash(tag) America is a new theatrical musical, an urgent urban rock concert, and a soul stirring personal testimonial all rolled into one powerful explosion of sound, youth, diversity and truth. Set against original musical collaborations by Anthony Fedorov and other artists, this inspirational new musical explores true stories of social justice, gender identity, race, immigration, and economic inequalities within the fabric of the American experience. #Hash(tag) America began as a concept album entitled Calling On You (co-produced by Anthony Fedorov and Grammy Award-winner Jeeve Ducornet) from a successfully funded 2016 Kickstarter campaign. Los Angeles will be treated to a concert version of the show first performed to a rousing audience and critical response at New York’s The Green Room 42. — MORE— AT CATALINA JAZZ CLUB IN HOLLYWOOD [Page 2] Joining Fedorov (American Idol, Rent), Isa Briones (Star Trek: Picard, Hamilton), and Eden Espinosa (Falsettos, Wicked, Rent) will be Kyle Carter (The Lion King, In the Heights), Christina Sajous (SpongeBob SquarePants, Spiderman, American Idiot), and Heath Saunders (Alice By Heart, Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert on FOX). Said Fedorov, “In the wake of our current political climate and as an immigrant myself, I felt like I had to do something. I started writing songs about racism, gun violence, and discrimination, and creating a show that will hopefully bring people together in these difficult times. -

Record Dreams Catalog
RECORD DREAMS 50 Hallucinations and Visions of Rare and Strange Vinyl Vinyl, to: vb. A neologism that describes the process of immersing yourself in an antique playback format, often to the point of obsession - i.e. I’m going to vinyl at Utrecht, I may be gone a long time. Or: I vinyled so hard that my bank balance has gone up the wazoo. The end result of vinyling is a record collection, which is defned as a bad idea (hoarding, duplicating, upgrading) often turned into a good idea (a saleable archive). If you’re reading this, you’ve gone down the rabbit hole like the rest of us. What is record collecting? Is it a doomed yet psychologically powerful wish to recapture that frst thrill of adolescent recognition or is it a quite understandable impulse to preserve and enjoy totemic artefacts from the frst - perhaps the only - great age of a truly mass art form, a mass youth culture? Fingering a particularly juicy 45 by the Stooges, Sweet or Sylvester, you could be forgiven for answering: fuck it, let’s boogie! But, you know, you’re here and so are we so, to quote Double Dee and Steinski, what does it all mean? Are you looking for - to take a few possibles - Kate Bush picture discs, early 80s Japanese synth on the Vanity label, European Led Zeppelin 45’s (because of course they did not deign to release singles in the UK), or vastly overpriced and not so good druggy LPs from the psychedelic fatso’s stall (Rainbow Ffolly, we salute you)? Or are you just drifting, browsing, going where the mood and the vinyl takes you? That’s where Utrecht scores. -
Cosmic Cowboys, Thunderbirds, and Punks: from Austin Countercultures to the ‘Live Music Capital of the World’ Jonathan Watson
Cosmic Cowboys, Thunderbirds, and Punks: From Austin Countercultures to the ‘Live Music Capital of the World’ Jonathan Watson 34 The Skunks at Raul’s in 1979. Photo by Ken Hoge. Courtesy of Jesse Sublett. The complex musical traditions of the American Southwest reflect the vastly diverse ethnic cultures long present throughout the region. For hundreds of years, the Southwest has been a cultural crossroads for Native Americans, Hispanics, Anglos, African Americans, Germans, Czechs, and many others, all of whom have left an important imprint on the area’s musical history. As historian Gary Hartman notes, 35 “The number, variety, and placement of the state’s ethnic communities are unique in all of North America, and they have allowed for a prolific cross-pollination of musical cultures that has given Texas music its special character.”1 Today, music continues to be a vital cultural element in defining what it means to be Texan. In recent years, there has been a growing body of scholarship that highlights music’s prominent role as a cultural force within society at the national level. For example, George Lipsitz’s Footsteps in the Dark: The Hidden Histories of Popular Music and Diane Pecknold’s Hidden in the Mix: The African American Presence in Country Music look at how music has played an important part in articulating and redefining racial and gender roles in American society. As valuable as such studies are, there is a need for further examination of musical history at the regional and local level, including within specific urban communities.2 Central Texas, and Austin in particular, can be seen as a microcosm of these larger trends throughout the Southwest of blending together disparate musical traditions and creating new forms of music that reflect the unique cultural history of the region. -
Press Release Art & Language Letters to the Jackson Pollock Bar in The
Press Release Art & Language Letters to The Jackson Pollock Bar in the Style of The Red Krayola Featuring Matthew Jesse Jackson John Coxon and J. Spaceman Thursday, October 24, 2019 504 West 24th Street, New York Doors: 6pm Performances: 6.30 – 8.30pm RSVP required: [email protected] Lisson Gallery New York is pleased to present a night of performance, discussion and music inspired by the pioneering work of Art & Language and their 40-year collaboration with The Red Krayola, a punk band founded in Houston, Texas, by Mayo Thompson and Frederick Barthelme in 1966. The evening will also feature a discussion with Art & Language, hosted by art historian Matthew Jesse Jackson, as well as a newly commissioned homage to some of The Red Krayola’s earliest live shows, composed by musicians J. Spaceman (of Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized) and John Coxon (from Spring Heel Jack and the Treader label). After the conceptual art group known as Art & Language was formed in 1968 at Coventry College of Art in the UK, it quickly spread to New York where it centered on two important journals, Art-Language (1969-85) and then later The Fox (1975-76), by which time some 20 artists were connected in various ways with the name. It was around this time that an album entitled Corrected Slogans came out, marking the first collaboration between Art & Language in the UK and The Red Krayola, in which snippets and slogans from conceptual art theory and philosophical tracts were sung or chanted over music composed in response by Thompson’s band.
