(April 20, 2015) - Target Chip Ganassi Racing (TCGR) driver Scott Dixon claimed his first win of the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series season in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. With the win, Dixon breaks a tie with Bobby Unser for sole possession of fifth on the all-time win’s list with 36, holding the distinction of being the winningest active driver. Dixon started the 80-lap race in the third position and powered the No. 9 Target Chevrolet into second place during the opening lap of the 12-turn circuit. The No. 9 trailed behind the back bumper of the No. 3 until the first caution of the day on Lap 5 for debris. Dixon continued to run in the second position after returning to green flag conditions on the 1.968-mile street course. Pit stops began to cycle through just before the halfway point of the race allowing Dixon to make his first pit stop of the day on Lap 30. With the help of a fast four-tire change and fuel load, the No. 9 was able to gain the lead after returning to the track. Dixon paced the field until Lap 54 when the second cycle of green flag pit stops began to take place. By Lap 58, the No. 9 was once again leading the 23-car field. Dixon remained in the lead for the final 22 laps of the race and developed a two-second gap over second place by the time he finished, claiming his first win of the season. With the result, Dixon holds the fourth position in the Verizon IndyCar Series point standings with 53 markers, 32 points behind the point leader Juan Pablo Montoya. Notes of Interest This win is the 110th win for the Target Race Program. The win is Dixon’s 36th win in Indy car racing. The victory is Dixon’s first at Long Beach. Dixon’s last win came at the 2014 GoPro Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma at Sonoma Raceway. The win comes in Dixon’s 241st Indy car start. This win marks TCGR’s 98th win and CGRT’s 167th win overall. TCGR Quoteboard Scott Dixon, No. 9 Target Chevrolet: "It feels amazing to get my first win here at Long Beach. It’s always been a tough track and one that I’ve had some bad luck at in the past. Team Target has had some great results here in the past and actually the more recent past with Dario, so it was nice to be able to add to that team history with today’s win. We started the weekend off really strong with some good practices and then a strong qualifying effort. It was a big weekend for Target – I think we had over 100 partners here, so it was great to be able to win in front of such a good crowd.” Bobby Unser (previously tied with Dixon on all-time IndyCar win’s list): “Long Beach is never an easy place to win and Scott Dixon did a great job and so did his pit crew to get him out front. Racing is a team effort and both Scott and his crew earned the win, my congratulations to them. Scott is a smart, smooth driver and once again proved it. Scott has a big, big abundance of talent and he has proven it over the years - he wins driving on any type of course he races his Indy car on. Scott wins on ovals, big and small; street courses and road courses. I remember last year he came from dead last to win at Mid-Ohio. Dixon has talent and skill and will win races for years and years to come. He is always really fun to watch, for sure. Congrats to him on earning his 36th career Indy car win.” Kanaan Scores Another Top-Five Finish in Long Beach LONG BEACH, Cali. (April 20, 2015) - NTT DATA Chip Ganassi Racing driver Tony Kanaan finished fifth in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach on the streets of Long Beach. After missing advancing to the Firestone Fast Six by just 0.070-seconds, Kanaan started seventh in his 12th Long Beach race. The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach saw it’s only full-course yellow on Lap five of 80 for surface debris in turn nine and after five laps of clean-up, the field went green again on Lap 10. Kanaan was seventh on the restart and would remain in that position until pitting for the first time for fuel and primary tires on Lap 29. Kanaan stayed in seventh for much of the race until moving up to fourth during the field’s second pit cycle before pitting for fuel and tires on Lap 55. The NTT DATA Chip Ganassi Racing crew’s quick second stop allowed Kanaan to beat the No. 11 car out of the pits and advance another two spots up to fifth. With 10 laps to go, Kanaan closed the gap between the No. 10 NTT DATA Chevrolet and the No. 2 and No. 22 cars in third and fourth place, but in doing so had used up the tires he had left. The No. 10, No. 22, and No. 2 cars battled for the third position in the last five laps, but Kanaan was unable to make the late-race pass. The No. 10 NTT DATA Chevrolet would receive the checkered flag in the fifth position. With the result, Kanaan holds the third position in the Verizon IndyCar Series point standings with 93 markers, 26 points behind the points leader Juan Pablo Montoya. Notes of Interest Kanaan’s fifth-place finish in Long Beach marked his fourth top-five in his last five races and his fifth top-10 finish in his last five races with the team. Kanaan was the first to break the Verizon IndyCar Series track record on the streets of Long Beach with a lap time of 1:06.744 seconds in the first practice session on Friday. NTT DATA Chip Ganassi Racing Quoteboard Tony Kanaan, No. 10 NTT DATA Chevrolet: “There at the end we (Montoya and Pagenaud) were all running so close trying to get that third-place spot, but I just wasn’t able to get past those two after using up all my tires trying to catch up with them. Once we all got in a pack, I knew how hard it was going to be to get past them. They’re both really, really good drivers and when you’re talking about a podium position I knew it was going to be hard. I was just back there watching and hoping one of them would make a mistake or get crazy with each other, but it never happened. I’m so happy for my teammate Scott. He drove a heck of a race and really deserved that win. I can’t really be upset with a top-five finish with how tight the series is, but NTT DATA Chip Ganassi Racing is going to keep moving forward and hopefully get that first win soon.” Saavedra Finishes 10th in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach LONG BEACH, Calif. (April 20, 2015) - Chip Ganassi Racing Teams (CGRT) driver Sabastian Saavedra finished 10th in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach in his first race of the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series season for the team. After starting 11th, Saavedra dropped one position to 12th on Lap 2 of the 80-lap race. He kept the No. 8 AFS Chevrolet on track during a caution for debris on Lap 5 and restarted in the 12th position. As green flag pit stops began on Lap 27, Saavedra advanced to the 11th position, moving up to eighth before making a green- flag pit stop on Lap 29, exchanging his primary tires for a set of red, alternate tires. Saavedra cycled through to 13th position and maintained that position until advancing to 12th on Lap 52 as the second round of green flag pit stops began. Saavedra worked his way up to the fifth position before pitting on Lap 56 for fuel and another set of red, alternate tires. He cycled through to 11th position and moved into the top-10 on Lap 60. The No. 8 AFS entry maintained that position for the next 20 laps, crossing the finish line in the 10th position. Notes of Interest Saavedra’s top-10 finish comes in his first start with CGRT and is his fourth top-10 finish in his Verizon IndyCar Series career. CGRT Quoteboard Sebastian Saavedra, No. 8 AFS Chevrolet: “A top-10 finish was an exciting way to start my relationship with the team. It helps to have a great car right out of the box and great teammates to support me after being out of the car for so long. This whole weekend was about getting the rust off and adapting to fuel-saving strategies and learning how to get the best out of the red and black tires. Overall I’m going home pleased with the finish. We know what we need to work on and improve for the next time I’m in the car.
