2018 YH Assembly TO OUR LAUNCH PAD COMPETITION PARTNERS THE 2018 YOUNG & HUNGRY LIST S ince 2011, The Tracking Board has created The Young & Hungry List from the nominations and advice of Hollywood’s most infuential tastemakers to showcase up-and-coming talent: these are the most in-demand and most buzzed about on-the-rise new writers. Whether it’s a newcomer with their frst big hit, a more seasoned veteran hitting their stride, or a writer returning to their roots, everyone on this list has one thing in common: an unrelenting drive to make their mark. The Young & Hungry List is meticulously assembled from the collected votes of producers, directors, executives, agents and managers, and is a product of the combined know-how of the industry’s most experienced professionals. Each year more voters turn out to make their voices heard, making each list more comprehensive than the last, and opening the doors for more new writers than ever before. Without the knowledge and expertise of these distinguished individuals, this list could not exist. Aiming to both recognize and energize the momentum with which these young professionals are making a name for themselves, Young & Hungry alumni have seen their work screened at every major festival, and their projects featured on every major industry list. They’ve been Nicholl Fellows, sold franchise blockbusters, created Emmy- winning shows, and won Oscars all after being recognized by this list. Several honorees in the past have gone on to become household names today. Unlike most year-end lists, The Young & Hungry List focuses not on the scripts, but on the writers themselves, emphasizing not just a single noteworthy project, but the foundations of an impressive body of work that’s just taking of. Now in its eighth year, The Young & Hungry List is still compiled with one goal in mind - to represent the “best of the best” of Hollywood’s collected shortlists. We are proud to have become the premier source for identifying new talent, emerging voices, and those with the potential to achieve greatness. *As a reminder, all writers, agents and managers are listed in alphabetical order by frst initial of their frst names. Monday, April 26, 2021 | No. 165 One of the things moviegoers like most about going to theatres is seeing films on the Big Screen, "the way they were meant to be seen." What people don't realize is that when films started in the mid-1890s, there were neither screens nor projectors. The very short films of that era were meant to be seen individually by looking into peep show machines in arcades. Those Kinetoscope devices were one of many inventions from Thomas Edison's factory in West Orange, NJ. Since Edison was monetizing his Kinetoscopes quite well, he had no interest in developing a machine to project film images on walls. Others, however, saw a big future in showing films to groups of people. Peep show owners, in fact, were very vocal in pressing Edison to devise a Film projection to large audiences was much more way to show life size images on arcade walls. This led to the Vitascope profitable than viewing through individual kiosks, since projection system, developed by Washington, DC inventor Thomas Armat, fewer machines were needed in proportion to the but then marketed by Edison's organization as if it were his own invention. number of viewers - Click to Play The first public Vitascope screening took place April 23, 1896 at Koster & Biel's Music Hall, a vaudeville house in New York's Herald Square at 34th Street near Broadway, the site today of Macy's. It would have premiered three days earlier, but it took longer than expected to install the machinery. That first night audience was dazzled by film images projected on a 20 foot canvas screen set within a gilded frame.

Corman created a factory for micro- budget filmmaking which gave break-in opportunities to young directors and actors at the start of Happy Birthday to their careers. Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Peter Bogdanovich, James Roger Corman – Click to Play Cameron, Joe Dante and Jonathan Demme all learned their filmmaking techniques by working on projects with Corman. Nearly 40 years ago, a small group of independent film production and sales companies had a vision of the film industry working together for the betterment of the whole. They saw the need for a Hollywood-based international marketplace for film. The American Film Market (AFM) was born out of this entrepreneurial spirit and collaboration of competitors. The first AFM in 1981 was attended by 34 sales companies and hundreds of buyers from all over the world. The AFM was an immediate success, fostering an environment where film financing and buyer discovery could flourish. It quickly became a required stop on the annual calendar of buyers, sellers, and producers worldwide. Today, the AFM is all-inclusive, drawing together the global industry – an amalgamation of film professionals from every corner of the world. It is the destination for all players in the industry to meet face-to-face, do business, and have thoughtful conversations about new films and the everchanging marketplace. The AFM is produced by the Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA), the trade association that unites Independents around the world and ensures that they are well represented across all issues that impact the independent business. IFTA’s AFM is operated by the industry, for the industry – no other market has this history or connection.
