We outline Einstein’s Equations which describes the geometry of spacetime due to the influence of mass, and from there derive the Schwarzschild metric. The metric relies on the curvature of spacetime to provide a means of measuring invariant spacetime intervals around an isolated, static, and spherically symmetric mass M, which could represent a star or a black hole. 26-2 Spacetime and the Spacetime Interval We Usually Think of Time and Space As Being Quite Different from One Another
Answer to Essential Question 26.1: (a) The obvious answer is that you are at rest. However, the question really only makes sense when we ask what the speed is measured with respect to. Typically, we measure our speed with respect to the Earth’s surface. If you answer this question while traveling on a plane, for instance, you might say that your speed is 500 km/h. Even then, however, you would be justified in saying that your speed is zero, because you are probably at rest with respect to the plane. (b) Your speed with respect to a point on the Earth’s axis depends on your latitude. At the latitude of New York City (40.8° north) , for instance, you travel in a circular path of radius equal to the radius of the Earth (6380 km) multiplied by the cosine of the latitude, which is 4830 km. You travel once around this circle in 24 hours, for a speed of 350 m/s (at a latitude of 40.8° north, at least). (c) The radius of the Earth’s orbit is 150 million km. The Earth travels once around this orbit in a year, corresponding to an orbital speed of 3 ! 104 m/s. This sounds like a high speed, but it is too small to see an appreciable effect from relativity. 26-2 Spacetime and the Spacetime Interval We usually think of time and space as being quite different from one another. In relativity, however, we link time and space by giving them the same units, drawing what are called spacetime diagrams, and plotting trajectories of objects through spacetime. -

The time reversal symmetry of the field equations implies that for any positive oriented solution there can be a symmetric negative oriented one that, in terms of the same time variable, respectively represent an expanding and a contracting universe. However, the choice of the time variable induced by the correct value of the Schrödinger equation in the two universes makes it so that their physical time variables can be reversely related. In that case, the two universes would both be expanding universes from the perspective of their internal inhabitants, who identify matter with the particles that move in their spacetimes and antimatter with the particles that move in the time reversely symmetric universe. If the assumptions considered are consistent with a realistic scenario of our universe, the creation of a universe–antiuniverse pair might explain two main and related problems in cosmology: the time asymmetry and the primordial matter–antimatter asymmetry of our universe. There is a shift towards applying mathematical concepts and skills in the context of authentic problems and for the student to understand concepts rather than merely follow a sequence of procedures. In mathematics classrooms, students will learn to think critically in a mathematical way with an understanding that there are many different ways to a solution and sometimes more than one right answer in applied mathematics. Mathematics is the economy of information. The central idea of all mathematics is to discover how knowing some things well, via reasoning, permit students to know much else—without having to commit the information to memory as a separate fact. It is the reasoned, logical connections that make mathematics coherent. The implementation of the Georgia Standards of Excellence in Mathematics places a greater emphasis on sense making, problem solving, reasoning, representation, connections, and communication. History of Mathematics History of Mathematics is a one-semester elective course option for students who have completed AP Calculus or are taking AP Calculus concurrently. It traces the development of major branches of mathematics throughout history, specifically algebra, geometry, number theory, and methods of proofs, how that development was influenced by the needs of various cultures, and how the mathematics in turn influenced culture. The course extends the numbers and counting, algebra, geometry, and data analysis and probability strands from previous courses, and includes a new history strand. -

Nowadays this theory is often used as a prototype for other, more intricate constructions to describe forces between elementary particles or other branches of fundamental physics. This is why in an introduction to general relativity it is of importance to separate as clearly as possible the various ingredients that together give shape to this paradigm. After explaining the physical motivations we ¯rst introduce curved coordinates, then add to this the notion of an a±ne connection ¯eld and only as a later step add to that the metric ¯eld. One then sees clearly how space and time get more and more structure, until ¯nally all we have to do is deduce Einstein's ¯eld equations. These notes materialized when I was asked to present some lectures on General Rela- tivity. Small changes were made over the years. I decided to make them freely available on the web, via my home page. Some readers expressed their irritation over the fact that after 12 pages I switch notation: the i in the time components of vectors disappears, and the metric becomes the ¡ + + + metric. Why this \inconsistency" in the notation? There were two reasons for this. The transition is made where we proceed from special relativity to general relativity. -

JOHN EARMAN* and CLARK GL YMUURT THE GRAVITATIONAL RED SHIFT AS A TEST OF GENERAL RELATIVITY: HISTORY AND ANALYSIS CHARLES St. John, who was in 1921 the most widely respected student of the Fraunhofer lines in the solar spectra, began his contribution to a symposium in Nncure on Einstein’s theories of relativity with the following statement: The agreement of the observed advance of Mercury’s perihelion and of the eclipse results of the British expeditions of 1919 with the deductions from the Einstein law of gravitation gives an increased importance to the observations on the displacements of the absorption lines in the solar spectrum relative to terrestrial sources, as the evidence on this deduction from the Einstein theory is at present contradictory. Particular interest, moreover, attaches to such observations, inasmuch as the mathematical physicists are not in agreement as to the validity of this deduction, and solar observations must eventually furnish the criterion.’ St. John’s statement touches on some of the reasons why the history of the red shift provides such a fascinating case study for those interested in the scientific reception of Einstein’s general theory of relativity. In contrast to the other two ‘classical tests’, the weight of the early observations was not in favor of Einstein’s red shift formula, and the reaction of the scientific community to the threat of disconfirmation reveals much more about the contemporary scientific views of Einstein’s theory. The last sentence of St. John’s statement points to another factor that both complicates and heightens the interest of the situation: in contrast to Einstein’s deductions of the advance of Mercury’s perihelion and of the bending of light, considerable doubt existed as to whether or not the general theory did entail a red shift for the solar spectrum. -

Rea: The Theory of Relativity and Applications What if I told you that time can speed up and slow down? What if I told you that everything you think you know about gravity is a lie? When Albert Einstein presented his theory of relativity to the world in the early 20th century, he was proposing just that. And what’s more? He’s been proven correct. Einstein’s theory has two parts: special relativity, which deals with inertial reference frames and general relativity, which deals with the curvature of space- time. A surface level study of the theory and its consequences followed by a look at some of its applications will provide an introduction to one of the most influential scientific discoveries of the last century. -

20. GEOMETRY OF THE CIRCLE PARTS OF THE CIRCLE Segments When we speak of a circle we may be referring to the plane figure itself or the boundary of the shape, called the circumference. In solving problems involving the circle, we must be familiar with several theorems. In order to understand these theorems, we review the names given to parts of a circle. Diameter and chord The region that is encompassed between an arc and a chord is called a segment. The region between the chord and the minor arc is called the minor segment. The region between the chord and the major arc is called the major segment. If the chord is a diameter, then both segments are equal and are called semi-circles. The straight line joining any two points on the circle is called a chord. Sectors A diameter is a chord that passes through the center of the circle. It is, therefore, the longest possible chord of a circle. In the diagram, O is the center of the circle, AB is a diameter and PQ is also a chord. Arcs The region that is enclosed by any two radii and an arc is called a sector. An arc of a circle is the part of the circumference of the circle that is cut off by a chord. -

Chapter 2 explores the meaning of spacetime symmetries in general and time reversal in particular. It is proposed that a third conception of time reversal, `geometric time reversal', is more appropriate for certain theoretical purposes than the existing `active' and `passive' conceptions. It is argued that, in the case of classical electromagnetism, a particular nonstandard time reversal operation is at least as defensible as the standard view. This unorthodox time reversal operation is of interest because it is the classical counterpart of a view according to which the so-called `CPT theorem' of quantum field theory is better called `PT theorem'; on this view, a puzzle about how an operation as apparently non- spatio-temporal as charge conjugation can be linked to spacetime symmetries in as intimate a way as a CPT theorem would seem to suggest dissolves. In chapter 3, we turn to the question of whether the CPT theorem is an essentially quantum-theoretic result. We state and prove a classical analogue of the CPT theorem for systems of tensor fields. This classical analogue, however, ii appears not to extend to systems of spinor fields. -

This hallmark states that all particles of nature feel gravity the same, independently of their masses and of the matter they are constituted. If the initial conditions of a motion are the same, all particles will follow the same trajectory when submitted to a gravitational field. The origin of universality is related to the concept of mass. In principle, there should exist two different kinds of mass: the inertial mass mi and the gravitational mass mg. The inertial mass would describe the resistance a particle shows whenever one attempts to change its state of motion, whereas the gravitational mass would describe how a particle reacts to the presence of a gravitational field. Particles with different relations mg=mi, therefore, should feel gravity differently when submitted to a given gravitational field. -

SOME GEOMETRY IN HIGH-DIMENSIONAL SPACES MATH 527A 1. Introduction Our geometric intuition is derived from three-dimensional space. Three coordinates suffice. Many objects of interest in analysis, however, require far more coordinates for a complete description. For example, a function f with domain [−1; 1] is defined by infinitely many \coordi- nates" f(t), one for each t 2 [−1; 1]. Or, we could consider f as being P1 n determined by its Taylor series n=0 ant (when such a representation exists). In that case, the numbers a0; a1; a2;::: could be thought of as coordinates. Perhaps the association of Fourier coefficients (there are countably many of them) to a periodic function is familiar; those are again coordinates of a sort. Strange Things can happen in infinite dimensions. One usually meets these, gradually (reluctantly?), in a course on Real Analysis or Func- tional Analysis. But infinite dimensional spaces need not always be completely mysterious; sometimes one lucks out and can watch a \coun- terintuitive" phenomenon developing in Rn for large n. This might be of use in one of several ways: perhaps the behavior for large but finite n is already useful, or one can deduce an interesting statement about limn!1 of something, or a peculiarity of infinite-dimensional spaces is illuminated. I will describe some curious features of cubes and balls in Rn, as n ! 1. These illustrate a phenomenon called concentration of measure. It will turn out that the important law of large numbers from probability theory is just one manifestation of high-dimensional geometry.
