  • The Tangle of It
Reid MacDonald 109,300 words 553 Valim Way Author’s personal draft Sacramento, CA 95831 Printed on 11/5/14 (626) 354-0679 [email protected] THE TANGLE OF IT by Reid McFarland THE TANGLE of IT by Reid McFarland ⁂ For Vickie We’ve been apart for some time now I don’t know how to navigate these waters I love you and hope we can find some calm harbor ⁂ Herein tells a story where not all times and places match Forgive me those who are in the know So goes the way of memory and invention ⁂ McFarland / The Tangle of It Chapter 1. FRANNY'S CANDIES “I roll the Kettledrum candy in my mouth.” Franny pictures herself chewing on Boston Fruit Slices and her jaw flexes automatically. “Chewy wedges taste lemon and lime and go BOOM-bah-BOOM when I bite into one.” She adds, “When I unwrap a second Kettledrum out of its tight parchment, I examine the sour and sugar-copper rind. They are better enjoyed in pairs. Tomás, why aren’t Kettledrum candies hard? Like Lifesavers or Butterscotches? When they clink against your teeth, they could sound like a snare or a top hat. I can hear a soft bass rumble a tympani symphony deep within me. I swear, the Kettledrums make my voice go baritone when I sing BOOM-bah-BOOM after eating one. It’s true: I’ve tried it!” Franny confesses this to me under her gummy-bear breath and I agree unconditionally the way a best friend must. We come here because most of her schoolmates do not make their way down the block to Doña Dolce.

  • Sex Gang Children
http://www.lollipop.com/article.php3?text=2008/01jan/dvd-sexgangchil... GO Sex Gang Children Indie/Alternative Live At Ocean DVD (MVD) Stoner/Hard Rock by Ewan Wadharmi Punk/Power Pop Legend has it that The Cult’s Ian Astbury coined the phrase Metal/Hardcore "Goth" in reference to fans of Sex Gang Children. (Too bad Electro/Industrial The Cult didn’t bring them on tour instead of the silly Killers Compilations imitators, Action Action.) The gang were contemporaries of Joy Division, Sigue Sique Sputnik, and Sisters of Mercy. This incarnation contains Kevin Matthew on drums, Matthew Saw and Adrian Portas doing some fine work on guitar, Carl Magnusson on bass, and Martin Olofsson adding mysticism by violin. Longtime guitarist and collaborator Terry MacLeavy is absent. This 2002 London performance would've been great to witness: A generous 21 songs over an hour and a half, dramatic lighting, and impassioned delivery by the artists. Leader Andi Sexgang is fascinating to watch, creeping around the stage like some creature from the netherworld. But being there is a far cry from watching this grainy footage "Shot from the audience’s point of view," as the What is disc portrays. That means bootleg. Whether commissioned RSS? by the band, or sanctioned after the fact, this is a bootleg with substandard sound and shaky footage. If you can get past that, it’s pretty enjoyable. Ranging from Subscribe to our cold Euro-dance numbers to quasi-cabaret theatre and bass-driven tales of darkness, the pieces RSS feed constantly reveal their influences and point to their followers.

[PMH 3.2 (2008) 103-122] Popular Music History (print) ISSN 1740-7133 doi:10.1558/pomh.v3i2.103 Popular Music History (online) ISSN 1743-1646 Peter Webb ‘Infected by the seed of post- industrial punk bohemia’: Nick Cave and the milieu of the 1980s underground Peter Webb is a lecturer and researcher in Media Department of Sociology and Culture in the Department of Sociology at 32 Pritchatts Road, Edgbaston, the University of Birmingham. He has published Birmingham, B15 2TT work on the Internet and the music and fashion UK industries, music scenes or milieu, notions of [email protected] independence in the music industry, globaliza- tion and music and theories of music cultures. He also is a musician who has released several albums, singles and EPs under the name ‘Statik Sound System’. Abstract This article uses the concepts of cultural milieu and music genre to explore the work of Nick Cave in the 1980s and later. Milieu theory is derived from the work of phenomenologists Alfred Schutz and Jorg Durschmitt. The article analyses the transgressive milieu of Cave and such col- laborators as Blixa Bargeld and Lydia Lunch and considers the way in which the music genres of punk, post-punk, gothic and industrial have been implicated in Nick Cave’s recorded output. Keywords: genre, gothic, industrial, milieu, post-punk, punk, scenes There’s a real need for an intelligent but aggressive group in London. All the treasured groups are just so softcore. At one time there was a real upsurge of new young groups and incredible records like ‘She is beyond Good and Evil’, you know the Pop Group before they sacrificed the music for that soapbox, toilet-roll politics.

For easier reading the three year compilation is in one A-Z artist and title formation. We have tried to avoid listing deletions, but as there are around 8,000 titles listed, it is inevitable that we may have inadvertently included some which may no longer be available. For obvious reasons, we do not actually stock all listed titles, but we can acquire them to order within days providing there are no stock problems at the manufacturers. There are obviously tens of thousands of other CDs currently available – most of them we can supply; so if what you require is not listed, you are welcome to enquire. Please read this catalogue in conjunction with our “CDs AT SPECIAL DISCOUNT PRICES” as some of the more mainstream titles may be available at cheaper prices in that feature. Please note that all items listed on this catalogue are of U.K. manufacture (apart from Imports denoted IM or IMP). Items listed on our Specials are a mix of U.K. and E.C. manufacture; we will supply you the items for the price/manufacturer you chose. ******* WHEN ORDERING FROM THIS CATALOGUE PLEASE QUOTE CAT 01/03 ******* the visitors r/m 8.50 live 7.50 ALCHEMY live at t’ fillmore east deluxe 16.50 tales of alibrarian coll’n+ DVD 20.00 10 CC voulez vous r/m 8.50
