Just bought & installed the game today and boy was i wondering how that Eunice Ortiz* guy (1st in almost all leaderboards) managed to make the leaderboard believe he finished 2-1 with just 153 dollars considering 1/4 of a horizontal road length is about 100 USD - and now i know. That really sucks, considering there are those few levels i'm positive i absolutely nailed and managed to cut every imaginable corner i could (and noticed) and i don't even get to 2000th place, while top positions are taken by people scoring ridiculously low budgets which couldn't even cover one tenth of required length of roads, sans support beams. You can look for those by using the ingame gallery: Choose some level, filter for wins only and sort by budget. Most likely one of the first few solutions will be by Eunice. The game runs on a certain set of rules and anything within those rules can and should be used to set the highscores. It certainly doesn't make it trivial to get or tie the record on all levels. We can look at improving the client-side obfuscation of high scores when submitting, but the reality is that since the leaderboards are hosted on Steam, there are multiple ways of hacking your way into them, even to the point of injecting leaderboard entries without even using the game. Steam Leaderboards are a great service both for developers and players, but currently do not support any kind of server-side verification. You will notice that any game that uses Steam leaderboards suffer from the same issue of hackers. What we did therefore is one of the few reliable solutions, which is a type of shadow-banning (also referred to as hell-banning), which will remove the scores of offending players client-side when showing the scores/ranks to other players. This means that a hacker will still see their own scores in-game, leading them to believe they have 'cheated' the system and are ranked #1, while in reality they have been banned and their score isn't shown to anyone except them. It only takes us a few minutes to identify and ban a player, since when there' s a leaderboard entry the game also submits the savefile associated with the entry, and if the savefile doesn't solve the level with the same budget as the leaderboard entry the player will most likely get banned.
