Junior Reporter Designs Winning T-Shirt

By AUDREY YAEL SMITH Junior Reporter

y favorite 2018 memory was when I found out I won the Canyon Charter Olympics Day T-shirt Mdesign contest. In my final year at Canyon, on Olym- pics Day, I was so proud to see the entire school wear- ing a T-shirt I designed for one of our school’s two big- gest fundraisers. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to run for 10 min- utes, as we do every year, because the air was smoky from the Woolsey fire. However, figure skater Michelle Kwan came to our school to talk about how hard she worked to achieve her dream to compete in the winter Olympics. Hearing her speak was incredibly inspiring!

On, Friday Nov. 30, community members gathered at Cal- vary Church of Pacific Palisades to attend “Malibu United”—a night of relief in response to the Woolsey fire. “The event went very well,” event organizer Taylor Be- gert shared with the Palisadian-Post. “The response was one of unity, and of many finding comfort in the face of tragedy and loss.” The evening was hosted by Well Collective, a Los Ange- les-based community of worship artists, in partnership with several places of worship, including Calvary Church, Univer- sity Church of Christ, Malibu Presbyterian, Malibu Gathering, Risen and Bel Air Presbyterian Church. The event, which was attended by about 125 people, was open to families and all were “welcome to join together for a night of unity amid the heartache and tragedy that Malibu has currently faced,” a press release stated. All funds raised at Malibu United went to Malibu churches to help support those who had been affected by the fire. —SARAH SHMERLING
