The Cinar story began with a horror movie. Soon after meeting for the first time in New Orleans in the early 1970s, company founders Micheline Charest and Ron Weinberg happened to see the now legendary British picture, The Wicker Man. Impressed by the film's strange power, the two movie lovers also saw an opportunity in it. Written by Anthony Shaffer (Sleuth, Frenzy), and directed by one—shot wonder Robin Hardy, The Wicker Man cooks up a delirious alternate reality that feels like it was made under the influence of a witch's spell. The story focuses on a police investigator (Edward Woodward), who travels to a remote Scottish island where he discovers that the local people, among them an aris- tocrat played by Christopher Lee, are devo- tees of a neo—pagan cult. The oddly named Sergeant Howie, a strictly orthodox Christian who intends to remain a virgin until his wedding night, is horrified by the island's un—Christian hedonism. Released in England on a double bill with Nicolas Roeg's Don't Look Now, and swamped FALLEN MASTERS BY MAURIE ALIOFF by Exorcist—mania, The Wicker Man tanked at the box office. Charest and Weinberg picked up the rights from Warner Bros., stashed a print in their car trunk and travelled the midnight—movie circuit. The Quebecoise (Charest) and the New Yorker (Weinberg) helped turn a unique film into a cult item and for their efforts netted about $250,000. Ironically, the couple's even- tual rise and fall, from hugely successful producers and distributors of wholesome children's shows to industry outcasts accused of fraud, originated with a story about moral righteousness destroyed by amoral devotion to the material world. -

Copyright and re-use policy See http://shura.shu.ac.uk/information.html Sheffield Hallam University Research Archive http://shura.shu.ac.uk Folklore in Film, Television and Museum Exhibits Folklore is a living, evolving part of our everyday lives and is present in the cultural artefacts that surround us. Significant elements of this cultural fabric are film and television, streamed into homes via a number of devices and from across many different countries and decades. My research interest lies in how folklore is communicated onscreen in this way, not only by what is represented on screen, but how and in what contexts. Examination of such texts can suggest to us how customs and rituals change over time and evolutions of belief and attitude, which directly affect how people may experience relevant archive material. For example, consider the representation of Voodoo in Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors (1965) or shrunken heads in numerous cinematic examples, including Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice (1994). Texts like these may be the very first experience many people have with concepts about such physical artefacts, before having come into close contact with them in a museum and, perhaps, even before questions about racism or colonialism are raised for them (the Pitt Rivers museum in Oxford recently removed its famous collection of shrunken heads as part of a decolonisation process). -

Overview The vampire is one of the most popular and enduring images in the world, giving rise to hundreds of monster movies around the globe every year, not to mention novels, short stories, plays, TV shows, and commercial merchandise. Yet the Western vampire image that we know from the film, television, and literature of today is very different from its eastern European progenitor. Nina Auerbach has said that "every age creates the vampire that it needs." In this course we will explore the eastern European origins of the vampire, similar entities in other cultures that predate them, and how the vampire in its look, nature, vulnerabilities, and threat has changed over the centuries. This approach will provide us with the means to learn about the geography, village and urban cultures, traditional social structure, and religions of eastern Europe; the nature and manifestations of Evil and the concept of Limited Good; physical, temporal, and societal boundaries and ritual passage that accompany them; and major historical and intellectual periods (the settlement of Europe, the Age of Reason, Romanticism, Neo-classicism, the Enlightenment, the Victorian era, up to today). -

Students will analyze ethnographic, documentary, vernacular and fine art media and gain competence in the aesthetic and technical dimensions of digital image production. The course explores narrative, observational and anti-narrative experimental shooting and editing, as well as the ethical, political, ethnographic, semiotic, and philosophical concerns such decisions entail Learning Outcomes Students will be able to: • Analyze the relationship of innovations in film and digital media on the production of vernacular, documentary and ethnographic visual representations • Identify and critically analyze different approaches to creating visual representations of cultural difference • Critically asses ethical, political, semiotic and philosophical consequences of technological, formal, and aesthetic choices in ethnographic image production • Learn basic technical skills of film and video production that are applicable to a variety of media • Produce short ethnographic videos Department Learning Goals - http://anthro.rutgers.edu/undergrad-program/department-learning-goals 1. Cinema In Dispute: Audiovisual Adventures of the Political Names ‘Worker’, ‘Factory’, ‘People’ Manuel Ramos Martínez Ph.D. Visual Cultures Goldsmiths College, University of London September 2013 1 I declare that all of the work presented in this thesis is my own. Manuel Ramos Martínez 2 Abstract Political names define the symbolic organisation of what is common and are therefore a potential site of contestation. It is with this field of possibility, and the role the moving image can play within it, that this dissertation is concerned. This thesis verifies that there is a transformative relation between the political name and the cinema. The cinema is an art with the capacity to intervene in the way we see and hear a name. On the other hand, a name operates politically from the moment it agitates a practice, in this case a certain cinema, into organising a better world. This research focuses on the audiovisual dynamism of the names ‘worker’, ‘factory’ and ‘people’ in contemporary cinemas. It is not the purpose of the argument to nostalgically maintain these old revolutionary names, rather to explore their efficacy as names-in-dispute, as names with which a present becomes something disputable. This thesis explores this dispute in the company of theorists and audiovisual artists committed to both emancipatory politics and experimentation. The philosophies of Jacques Rancière and Alain Badiou are of significance for this thesis since they break away from the semiotic model and its symptomatic readings in order to understand the name as a political gesture. Inspired by their affirmative politics, the analysis investigates cinematic practices troubled and stimulated by the names ‘worker’, ‘factory’, ‘people’: the work of Peter Watkins, Wang Bing, Harun Farocki, Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub. -
