University of Kotli Azad Jammu and Kashmir has a unique position being an academic hub in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Its geographic location coupled with professional learning environment makes the university an excellent place for higher education. It is matter of great satisfaction that since long, this institution has been serving the community and providing the quality education in the fields of Business Administration, Management Sciences and Information Technology. The alumni of the University of Kotli Azad Jammu and Kashmir are serving in esteemed organizations in academia, industry and actively working not only within Pakistan but abroad as well. The evolution of the campus into a full-fledged university has opened up new horizons of knowledge, not only for the youth of thickly populated Kotli district but also for the rest of the population in the state of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan. Newly established departments of the University having dynamic and competent faculty with international exposure in research can help in grooming students in the years and decades to come, the graduates to be trained in a rich and vibrant research environment will contribute in the sustaining the country's economy. In addition to faculties like Sciences, Social Sciences, and Management Sciences, the recently established faculty of Computing and Engineering should provide the youth with an opportunity to earn professional degrees in engineering disciplines. It is a matter of satisfaction that this university is also catering in the educational needs of the students from Poonch and Sudhnuti districts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The University during the last four years has earned its name due to significant achievements in academic and human resource development. Regardless of nascent stage of its development; University of Kotli Azad Jammu and Kashmir has achieved milestones in hosting International Conferences, job fairs, sports events and seminars focusing on relevance of education and research and exposure of faculty and students. Due to peaceful and calm learning environment, University of Kotli Azad Jammu and Kashmir is nurturing more than four thousand (4000) students in an array of degree programs. It is a matter of great pride and gratification that this organization has produced high quality graduates in management sciences, contributing in national and international financial institution. Newly established faculties including Faculty of Sciences and Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities are taking off for a glorious flight to earn an excellent repute in academia and research within the country and abroad. The faculty of Computing and Engineering is also ready to take its shape to cater the aspirations of youth of the area. Since District Kotli and its catchment area is blessed with tremendous biological, physical and historical resources, the applied research on these resources can act as catalyst to bring about a socio-economic change in the society with sustainable deployment. The University is very popular for its conducive environment of learning and support it provides to its students. Student support in the shape of Prime minister's laptop scheme, Merit scholarships, Fee reimbursement and Higher Education Commission (HEC) need based scholarships are being offered as per guidelines of HEC Pakistan. The diaspora of Kotli residing particularly in UK has shown its keen interest in university development and student's progression by establishing "British Forum for University of Kotli" and hope will be helpful to establish its linkages with HEI's in UK. The student societies are actively providing very friendly and healthy competitive platform for exploring the hidden potentials of the youth. The University management and faculty is focusing on quality education and research to groom the new generation for its contribution at national and international arena. AJ&K has been administratively divided in to 10 districts including Muzaffarabad, Neelam, Hatyan Bala, Bagh, Poonch, Sudhnoti, Haveli,Kotli, Mirpur and Bhimber. Azad Kashmir is globally acclaimed for its exceptional and amazing natural beauty. The state has a distinct fame among all the tourist resorts in the world. Beautiful valleys, snow-capped mountain peaks, mountain streams, waterfalls, lovely lakes, green meadows, snow-covered landscapes, gardens, trekking routes, religious shrines, historical monuments, cool and delightful climate are to make Kashmir the "Heaven on the Earth". Hiking and tracking sites, trout fishing in the frozen waters of the Neelum River and the remains of the Buddhist civilization in the Sharda Valley are other areas of attraction. The beautiful wood work, the famous Kashmiri handicrafts, traditional Kashmiri foods and above all a clean and immaculate environment presents other areas of delight in Kashmir. The custom rich and traditional society of AJ&K is also a subject of anthropological value. The State of Azad Jammu & Kashmir contributes a distinctive cultural entity developed by its people, which is profoundly different from the rest of the sub-continent. Its mountain terrain and wide valleys decanted harsh terms on the development of its culture. This is why the people of Azad Jammu & Kashmir have developed into a persistent hard working, non aggressive race which leads a simple and frugal life. Their folk dances, music, dress, traditions, jewellery, handicrafts and performing arts all are windows to their character. Its tremendous beauty for which reason it is also described as the "Switzerland of Asia". In addition to exceptional landscape, the state has been known for its rich heritage of diversity in flora and fauna of immense value. 06 University of Kotli Azad Jammu and Kashmir Kotli Kotli is the largest district of Azad Jammu and Kashmir both in population and area. District Kotli is the centre of almost 1 million population. The city is situated on foot hills of lower Himalayas surrounded by the Peer Panjaal Mountain range in North and fascinating valleys of Banah, Sehnsa, Sarsawa and Charhoi in South and West. One of the most attractive tourist sites, Kotli offers the eye catching scenic beauty in its surroundings. The city of more than 300 mosques, tombs and spiritual shrines, has its catchment area of marvelous waterfalls, mountains and vallies. Being the land of peace loving people, Kotli has many attractions other than a fast growing economic hub in the middle of Himalayan Mountains. The hot spring just a few miles away from city is a remarkable miracle that a t t r a c t s t h o u s a n d s o f tourists. The river Poonch flowing in zigzag patterns between the mountains with incredible beauty exhibits fabulous scenes just 10 minutes' drive from the University campus. Accepted 17 May, 2012 From ancient times, plants are being used in treatment of various diseases. Many of today’s drugs have been derived from plant sources. This research work reveals the indigenous medicinal knowledge of important medicinal plants from district Kotli Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Pakistan. A total 25 common medicinal plants belonging to the 14 families were reported. Their medicinal and other botanically important uses are described by conducting a meeting and interviews from a total of 137 local inhabitants including 73 males, 47 females and 17 Hakims (herbal specialists). Primary source of indigenous medicines were herbs (56%), shrubs (28%) and trees (16%). Herbal preparations were made by the different plant parts. Most common plant part used to make the herbal preparation was leaf (39%) followed by the root (19%), whole plant (12%), seed (9%), bark (7%), fruit (7%), flower (5%) and tuber (2%).

    Sarhad J. Agric. Vol. 23, No. 4, 2007 PREVALENCE OF DIABETES MELLITUS IN MIRPUR AND KOTLI DISTRICTS OF AZAD JAMMU & KASHMIR (AJ&K) Saleem Khan *, M. Abbas *, Fozia Habib ** , Iftikhar H. Khattak *, and N. Iqbal * ABSTRACT Prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus was investigated in the two districts of AJ&K, Mirpur and Kotli. A total of 600 families were randomly selected from both districts for the study. A questionnaire, containing information about diabetes and diet, was filled from a responsible individual of above 30 years of each family. The mean prevalence of diabetes mellitus was 1.77% in the target area. The prevalence was higher in male (1.01%) than female (0.76%). The consumption of milk and meat of people in the area was lower than the recommended amount. The findings indicated that at present, the prevalence of diabetes is not of great concern in AJ&K. However, preventive measure should be taken to avoid the serious consequences of this killer disease.
