His paper is, as he makes clear in his title, a personal insight to her character. We are also pleased to include the thoughts of Revd Graham Akers on the concept of the covenant in Congregational churches. Given his role as chair of the Congregational Federation’s pastoral care board, he is clearly interested in the application of Congregational principles in the churches. In addition we include a review article from Robert Pope who has written on The Transformation of Congregationalism 1900–2000, a new publication from the Congregational Federation. Historians, like politicians, should value debate. In looking back they are bound to move on. Revisionism is built into their system. Historians should, nonetheless, shudder at such a title as "Why did the United Reformed Church Fail?" but the editor let it pass b~cause Martin Camroux expresses what some readers might feel, he draws attention to an elephant in the URC room, and future readers will see that his article is valuable historiography. David Peel's review of Alan Sell's Nonconformist Theology in the Twentieth Century and Professor Sell's response tend to underline concerns surfacing in Mr Camroux's article.

Such questions are probably no longer set. On the whole the Journal has avoided anniversaries -up to a point. This issue is a case in point. The quincentenary of Calvin's birth in 2009 is appropriately recognised in a review, and there will be more in future issues because anniversaries breed publications. The bicentenary of Whitefield's death in 1970 is recognised forty years later by publishing Geoffrey Nuttall's commemorative address, forwarded to the Journal by Roger Tomes, one of this issue's reviewers. In 1970 Dr. Tomes was one ofWhitefield Memorial Church's two ministers. He recalls that the address was delivered in the course of a Sunday evening service.     Canadian Urban Ministry: The Nature and Challenges of Success Barry Kent Morris (BA, BD, ThM) Supervised by: Dr Robert Pope, Director of Studies Dr Sarah Lewis, Second Supervisor This research was undertaken under the auspices of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David Submitted in partial fulfilment for the award of a Degree of Master of Philosophy University of Wales 2016 and resubmitted July 28, 2017 iii Abstract This thesis characterises the nature and the possibilities of success including its tensions and obstacles in urban ministry. There are featured descriptions on the nature and dynamics of urban ministry and various understandings of success are posed –especially that which favours a purposeful aim toward fulfilment of a ministry’s mission purposes, with attention to a faithful public-and-prophetic witness (as the ground and aim for ministry). A literature survey to help discern and frame the research questions focuses on England and North America, especially Canada. The chapters consider the research questions of what characterises success and its challenges in urban ministry and how do urban ministry situations engage the enduring tensions of charity and/or justice. The chapters include three detailed case studies in three different Canadian cities. They are narrated and analysed from the perspective of what makes for a meaningful, enduring civic presence and what caveats to be critically aware of – the UK and USA social theologian, Luke Bretherton, with additions, is constructively employed (as well as for framing the literature review). The concluding chapter provides a comparative summary analysis of the case studies. It proposes that the most comprehensive and integral way to depict the nature of success in urban ministry is by way of engaging the interweaving variables of earnest listening, stable places or presence, a capacity to endure, and dedication to what it takes to bear a public-and-prophetic witness – including constructive attention to the critical caveats of commodification, co-optation, communalism, clientelism, and cowardice.

Through a series of case studies, including an examination of the role of religious controversy in fin-de-siècle Parliamentary politics, it shows that religious belief and practice were more important in turn-of-the-century Britain than has been appreciated. The argument that the onset of secularization in Britain as defined by both a decline in religious attendance and personal belief can be pushed back until at least the 1920s or 1930s is not new. Yet, the insight that religious belief and practice remained a constituent part of late-Victorian and Edwardian national identity and public life has thus far failed to penetrate political, social, and cultural histories of the period.

She was an Englishwoman of distant German descent and international reputation. Her ecumenism which at the time of her death seemed prophetic of an immediate future, now seems to illuminate a past which is indeed another country. It should have flowered more fully than it did in Geneva, where in fact it was (administratively speaking) frustrated. It certainly flowered fully, if relatively briefly, in Edinburgh where she became Principal of St Colm's. There she wrote the life of an earlier Principal, Ann Hunter Small, who had given a paper at Edinburgh 1910, the World Missionary Conference which (or so it is commonly believed) kick-started the Ecumenical Movement. That conference is characteristically re-assessed by David Thompson in the first of two centenary (give or take a year) commemorations; the second, by Dr.
