Tourism Ireland Opens the Door to Game of Thrones® in Ballintoy 26/03/2019 Flyer - Tourism Ireland opens the door to Game of Thrones® in Ballintoy Tourism Ireland opens the door to Game of Thrones® in Ballintoy ~6th ‘Door of Thrones’ unveiled to showcase Northern Ireland to fans worldwide~ As episode six, season six of Game of Thrones® aired last night, Tourism Ireland unveiled its latest ‘Door of Thrones’ – in the Fullerton Arms in Ballintoy, the location for exterior Pyke shots and the Iron Islands in HBO’s fantasy drama. Tourism Ireland’s Game of Thrones® campaign is rolling out until the end of June, showcasing Northern Ireland to millions of the show’s fans worldwide. It involves a series of ten carved doors, each one telling the story of the latest episode. The doors have been created using wood salvaged from trees at the Dark Hedges (otherwise known as the Kingsroad in Game of Thrones®), which fell during Storm Gertrude. Echoing scenes from last night’s episode, this week’s door depicts Targaryens and dragons. Designs for the others were based on “The Red Woman”, “Home”, “Oathbreaker”, “Book of Stranger” and “The Doors”. The doors hang in prominent locations for all to see. The door from episode one hangs in The Cuan guest inn in Strangford, near the filming locations of Castle Ward and Audley’s Castle. The second door hangs in Fiddlers Green in Portaferry, near Quintin Bay. The third, is in the Percy French restaurant in Newcastle, near Tollymore Forest Park; the fourth door is in Blakes of the Hollow, Enniskillen, near Pollagollum Cave; and the fifth door is in Frank Owens Bar, Limavady, near Downhill Strand. Tourism Ireland has also unveiled its sixth – limited edition – Game of Thrones® stamp, another element of the campaign, produced in conjunction with the Royal Mail. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts Florida Atlantic University Boca Raton, FL August 2016 Copyright 2016 by Rachel Hartnett ii Acknowledgements Foremost, I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to my advisor Dr. Elizabeth Swanstrom for her motivation, support, and knowledge. Besides encouraging me to pursue graduate school, she has been a pillar of support both intellectually and emotionally throughout all of my studies. I could never fully express my appreciation, but I owe her my eternal gratitude and couldn’t have asked for a better advisor and mentor. I also would like to thank the rest of my thesis committee: Dr. Eric Berlatsky and Dr. Carol McGuirk, for their inspiration, insightful comments, and willingness to edit my work. I also thank all of my fellow English graduate students at FAU, but in particular: Jenn Murray and Advitiya Sachdev, for the motivating discussions, the all-nighters before paper deadlines, and all the fun we have had in these few years. I’m also sincerely grateful for my long-time personal friends, Courtney McArthur and Phyllis Klarmann, who put up with my rants, listened to sections of my thesis over and over again, and helped me survive through the entire process. Their emotional support and mental care helped me stay focused on my graduate study despite numerous setbacks. Last but not the least, I would like to express my heart-felt gratitude to my sisters, Kelly and Jamie, and my mother.

THESIS RACIALIZATION, FEMININITY, MOTHERHOOD AND THE IRON THRONE GAME OF THRONES AS A HIGH FANTASY REJECTION OF WOMEN OF COLOR Submitted by Aaunterria Treil Bollinger-Deters Department of Ethnic Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Fall 2018 Master’s Committee: Advisor: Ray Black Joon Kim Hye Seung Chung Copyright by Aaunterria Bollinger 2018 All Rights Reserved. ABSTRACT RACIALIZATION, FEMININITY, MOTHERHOOD AND THE IRON THRONE GAME OF THRONES A HIGH FANTASY REJECTION OF WOMEN OF COLOR This analysis dissects the historic preconceptions by which American television has erased and evaded race and racialized gender, sexuality and class distinctions within high fantasy fiction by dissociation, systemic neglect and negating artistic responsibility, much like American social reality. This investigation of high fantasy creative fiction alongside its historically inherited framework of hierarchal violent oppressions sets a tone through racialized caste, fetishized gender and sexuality. With the cult classic television series, Game of Thrones (2011-2019) as example, portrayals of white and nonwhite racial patterns as they define womanhood and motherhood are dichotomized through a new visual culture critical lens called the Colonizers Template. This methodological evaluation is addressed through a three-pronged specified study of influential areas: the creators of Game of Thrones as high fantasy creative contributors, the context of Game of Thrones

Appendix: Fire vs Flame Warm fire AGOT, Tyrion II: Tyrion pulled out the stopper, tilted his head, and squeezed a long stream into his mouth. The wine was cool fire as it trickled down his throat and warmed his belly. He held out the skin to Jon Snow. "Want some?" AGOT, Tyrion III: Mormont scarcely seemed to hear him. The old man warmed his hands before the fire. AGOT, Tyrion III: He shoved his hands into his armpits and walked faster, praying that Morrec had remembered to warm his bed with hot bricks from the fire. AGOT, Dany III: "A trader from Qarth once told me that dragons came from the moon," blond Doreah said as she warmed a towel over the fire. AGOT, Tyrion IV: I was about to settle down to a warm fire and a roast fowl, and that wretched singer had to open his mouth, he thought mournfully. AGOT, Cat VI: he commander, an anxious young knight with a pockmarked face, offered bread and cheese and the chance to warm themselves before his fire, but Mya declined. AGOT, Tyrion VI: "If so, I prefer to die comfortable," Tyrion replied. "We need a fire. The nights are cold up here, and hot food will warm our bellies and lift our spirits.” ACOK, Davos I: The Myrmen swapped jokes as they enjoyed the warmth of the fire, but young Lord Bar Emmon had turned a splotchy grey, and Lord Velaryon was watching the king rather than the conflagration. ACOK, Jon III: "Oh." Sam did not look anxious to meet Craster, even if it meant a warm fire.

  • A Dance with Deviants: the Sexual As Fantastic in a Song of Ice and Fire
A Dance with Deviants: The Sexual as Fantastic in A Song of Ice and Fire by Lars Johnson A thesis presented for the B.S. degree with Honors in The Department of English University of Michigan Winter 2019 © 2019 Lars Johnson For Hannah, who has accompanied me on our journey through Westeros Acknowledgments J.R.R. Tolkien said that The Lord of the Rings was a tale that grew in the telling. I would have to echo Tolkien’s sentiment with regards to this thesis and thus have a great many people to thank for its growth and eventual completion. First, I extend my sincerest, most heartfelt thanks to my intrepid advisor Lisa Makman. I certainly could not have succeeded without her surefooted guidance through the mountainous expanses of fantasy theory (and every other form of theory I encountered as I wrote, for that matter). Dr. Makman was commendably tolerant of my 4:00 AM emails and always knew just what direction to steer me in when I came to her with my grotesquely jumbled piles of notes and collections of ideas. I truly could not have asked for a more fantastic(al) mentor. I also must express profound gratitude to Sean Silver, whose extensive knowledge of digital methods saw me through the trials of coding. Though he was on the other side of the globe as I prepared this thesis, Dr. Silver was never more than an email away and always offered superb counsel. Adela Pinch, Honors director and wealth of literary and rhetorical knowledge, was also a massive aid in the shaping of this thesis.

For other uses, see Game of Thrones (disambiguation). Game of Thrones is an American fantasy drama television series created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss for HBO. It is an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, a series of fantasy novels by George R. R. Martin, the first of which is A Game of Thrones. The show was shot in the United Kingdom, Canada, Croatia, Iceland, Malta, Morocco, and Spain. It premiered on HBO in the United States on April 17, 2011, and concluded on May 19, 2019, with 73 episodes broadcast over eight seasons. Set on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, Game of Thrones has a large ensemble cast and follows several story arcs throughout the course of the show. The first major arc concerns the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros through a web of political con- flicts among the noble families either vying to claim the throne or fighting for independence from whoever sits on it. A second focuses on the last descendant of the realm’s deposed rul- ing dynasty, who has been exiled to Essos and is plotting to return and reclaim the throne. The third follows the Night’s Watch, a military order defending the realm against threats from beyond Westeros’s northern border. Game of Thrones attracted a record viewership on HBO and has a broad, active, and inter- national fan base.
