5 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hello all

Hope everyone is doing well and having a fun and eventful summer. show season is in full swing and it's been great seeing all of the nice wins by our members in conformation as well as performance. Also hats off to our juniors, great job all of you keep it up.

The National is coming soon and I know the team has been working hard putting it together. Everyone be safe as you travel there and have lots of fun.

It's almost election time so if you feel like you want to get more involved or run for an office or head a committee please drop a line to our secretary.

Jeremy McClister President AMTC

NOTES FROM THE NEWSLETTER EDITOR

Rick and I are very sad we can’t go to the National this year. We know it’s going to be awesome.

We are SO very blessed to have such beautiful animal companions, amazing friendships and mentors, active (and often unappreciated and unsung) volunteers, and just all around genuine sportsmanship in our Manchester group. Rick and I could have never imagined when we got our little “pet” Cricket eight years ago how truly rich and expansive our life would become because of “just one little dog”. I am also so thankful I get to give back to all of you and our beautiful breed through editing our newsletter, and sincerely appreciate all of the wonderful contributions to its’ success.

Safe travels to all of you, and please send lots and lots of pictures for those of us missing you!

REPORT OF THE SECRETARY

Secretary’s Report for August 2016 Newsletter

The board has approved seven new memberships since the last issue of the newsletter. Their contact information is elsewhere in this newsletter. Please make them feel welcome when you see them out and about.

Regarding membership applications and dues renewal...PLEASE make sure if you are sponsoring a new member: their application must be the official form that allows for the applicant(s) and club member sponsor signatures and must be accompanied by a brief letter of introduction from the applicant(s) and a letter of recommendation by the number 1 sponsor. The application form is on our club website so please print off several and carry them with you to shows, classes and just to have on hand for those who may be interested in joining the club. Those of you who place puppies, perhaps including an application in your ‘puppy packet’ would be a great idea.

Dues RENEWAL: Dues are payable on or before January 1st of each year. Notice of dues/membership renewal is published each year in the November issue of our club’s newsletter. Dues that are not paid by the end of the grace period of March 1st of each year will automatically terminate your membership. Please refer to your By Laws for proper procedure pertaining to dues renewal.

Our National this year will have a new event organized by new member, Robin Gates. Robin presented a proposal to the board, which was approved, to hold a “Manchester Terrier of the Year” competition. It will be the first of its kind for our breed and is by invitation only. The board has received a great deal of extremely positive feedback regarding this event. There is more information regarding this event elsewhere in this issue of the newsletter.

The board approved the sponsorship of medallions for both varieties at the AKC/Royal Canin shows in December this year in Florida. We have sponsored these medallions the past several years. There will also be our Meet the Breeds booth. We also approved electricity for the booth and also agreed to sponsor agility, rally & obedience.

District 8 has requested $400 from the club’s health fund to fund a keynote speaker presenting a Reproduction Seminar during our 2016 National event. Motion made by Susan Thrasher to donate the requested funds as presented, 2nd by Dianna Texter. All in favor, motion approved.

7 REPORT OF THE SECRETARY, Cont.

**Correction to 2015 Annual General Meeting Minutes: regarding the approved motion as noted in the 2015 Annual Meeting Minutes regarding the request by Michelle Barlak that proceeds from our annual 2015 auction/raffle be donated to assist with a health study pertaining to a genetic marker for JCM, the motion should have included the following: and to suspend for this one instance, Article 1.4.4 of the club’s Specialty and Supported Entry Show Guidelines, Policies and Procedures which reads as follows,” Should the AMTC sponsor an auction or other fund raising event to be held in conjunction with the National Specialty, the proceeds shall be split as follows: 40% to the hosting District; 30% to the AMTC and 30% to Rescue.” I apologize for the error in omitting this entry of my notes.

Our website will soon include information pertaining to Judges’ Education. Chairperson, Jo Ann Emrick has been working on organizing and updating materials utilized for our breed judges’ education seminars.

The Nominating Committee for the upcoming election of officers and board members is being organized and will be chaired by Lisa Nonog, 1st VP.

As always, remember, this is your club and the board would like to hear from you with your comments and concerns. We welcome feedback from our membership. We will do our best to answer any questions in a timely manner but please remember, we all have lives to lead (families, jobs, etc.) and are sometimes busy at times but rest assured, we will get back to you.

Enjoy what’s left of your summer with your manchesters!!

NEW MEMBERSHIP APPLICANTS

The Gavilo-Lane Family

To Whom It May Concern,

I appreciate your consideration of our family application to join the American Manchester Terrier Club.

We have two Toy Manchester : Luna and Stella. We were introduced to the breed by a friend, after we specified our desire for a small but sturdy, intelligent, active, short/clean coat (compatible with my daughter's allergies/asthma), and loving dog. Luna/Stella love our active lifestyle (hiking/running, kayaking, paddle boarding, etc.) and are wonderful additions to our family.

Our son has aspirations of having our compete in Rally/Agility competitions in the future. To this end, he's rerolled in classes to train and work with our pups.

Both of our children, Connor and Drew, are also great ambassadors for the breed. Since we lead such an active lifestyle, Luna/Stella get out quite a bit and are often mistaken for MinPins's. Connor and Drew are good about educating others about the joys of owning a and the unique qualities of this breed.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Regards, Laurie Gavilo-Lane

I would like to highly recommend that the Gavilo-Lane family be allowed to join the AMTC.

Laurie, Jason, Connor and Drew love their two toy Manchesters, Luna and Stella. Luna was prominently featured on their 2015 Christmas card.

The children, Connor and Drew, are very interested in doing rally and conformance with their girls.

But most of all, you couldn't ask for a nicer family - who truly do LOVE their girls and our breed - to be spokespeople for our breed.

*********************************** August 1, 2016

To: AMTC Board of Directors Subject: Membership Application of the Gavilo Family

It is with utmost pleasure that I recommend and sponsor the Gavilo’s for membership in the AMTC.

In the fall of 2015, the Gavilo’s acquired their first Toy Manchester, Luna, from me and promptly fell in love. As a breeder, I couldn’t be happier with the care the Gavilo’s have taken of Luna, and their enthusiasm for the breed. As Luna matures, they intend to participate in Agility and possibly conformation. The Gavilo’s routinely send photos and updates on Luna’s progress.

The Gavilo’s, like so many of us, discovered that TMT’s are like potato chips – you can’t have more than one; so, they added a second TMT to their family bred by Richard and Cheryl Roach. Their love affair with our breed firmly entrenched, the Gavilo’s have chosen to become members of the AMTC to contribute to the breed, and I respectfully request that the Board of Directors approve their application for membership.

Carolyn Horowitz Rustic Lane Manchester Terriers 6991 Williams Ferry Road Lenoir City, TN 37771 863-393-5579

5/1/16 Hi, my name is Marya Fittje - I am applying to join the club. I have been in the dog world i.e. raised and showed Labrador and ran them in the field. Then I went to a dog show in WA and saw my first TMT, love at first sight. Started to do research on the breed and on breeders. I got my first Toy Manchester 7 years ago, I have 4 now. I finished all of their titles and have bred 2 litters. I take them everywhere with me and try to educate anyone that ask me about my dogs. I support the club and try to help anytime I am asked. I am a hard worker to support any club I belong to.

Thanks for your time Marya Fittje

Dear AMTC Members,

I am writing this to ask that Sabra Weeks be considered for membership into the AMTC. My husband Jeremy and I have known Sabra for several years, and have become mentors to her in this breed. Sabra is very passionate about Manchester’s and is very competitive in the breed ring. She has finished several Manchester’s, and has already had some amazing wins in the conformation ring. Sabra is a spokeswoman for the breed and promotes the breed to everyone she comes in contact with. I feel she will be a valuable asset to the club and will gain and grow personally by becoming a member.

Sincerely Rachel Mcclister

AMTC JUDGES EDUCATION COMMITTEE REPORT

*****Up-date on the "Manchester Terrier at a Glance" card and "Illustrated Standard of Perfection of the Manchester Terrier" is looking more like a reality for our Club.

I've spoken to three Artists so far. Reaching out to our Members for reference photos of Profile, Movement and Head Studies was a huge success. Thanks to all that participated. Moving forward, our Artists are busy with commissions.

One Artist did commit to being able to take on a project by years’ end. The second Artist is rearranging their schedule to try and accommodate us.

*****Gathering photos for the Breed Brochure has been successful. I've enjoyed visiting many club members web sites looking at photos the past couple of months. Thanks to those that also participated in this request, much appreciated. If one of your photos is chosen, I'll be getting in touch with you for a high resolution and simple copyright release on it.

The issue that came up was we ran low on the Breed Brochures. When it came time to get them reprinted, the original art work was lost. The printer and designer were notified, however, neither had saved copies of the original work. The text is fine and will not be changed. It was the photographs that did not copy well from a brochure. Time to up-date photos anyway!

*****Presently, I am going through Historical Artwork and will be selecting a multitude of pieces in chronological order to be displayed on the AMTC Web site to showcase our breed throughout history.

If anyone has any old prints, paintings, etc. that you would like to share a scan or picture of with me for this project, please do! The only thing I ask is a brief write up on the piece including Artist and date.

*****To those attending this year’s National, safe travels and enjoy! I'm looking forward to the Newly added "Top Dog Of The Year" award! Best wishes, one and all.

Thanks,

By Michelle Barlak, AMTC Health Chair

If you have a Manchester die suddenly that is under 1 year of age, please consider donating the body for necropsy for the Juvenile Cardiomyopathy study. Contact Michelle Barlak at 585-329-4317 or [email protected] All information will be kept confidential

*BREAKING NEWS*

We did it! We are pleased to share the exciting news that Dr. Eva Furrow and her team at the University of Minnesota have identified the genetic mutation responsible for Juvenile Dilated Cardiomyopathy (JDCM) in Toy Manchester Terriers/English Toy Terriers and a test is now available for breeding stock! Read the official announcement at the link below.

21 HEALTH REPORT, Cont.

Please share and help spread the good news!! http://www.canadamt.com/uploads/1/2/8/7/12877891/jdcm.pdf http://www.vetmed.umn.edu/departments/veterinary-and-biomedical-sciences/research/canine-genetics- lab/genetic-testing/juvenile-cardiomyopathy

The University of Minnesota has kindly extended their bulk litter pricing to include any instance of multiple submissions* (4 or more dogs) from one person. To qualify for a bulk discount:

1) Samples for four (4) or more dogs must be sent; 2) All of the samples must be sent together in the same shipment; 3) They must be listed under the same contact person with one bill going to only one individual (no split billing).

Results will be sent to the single contact person identified, so please note that this is not a method for holding a testing clinic but rather a way for individuals to submit multiple samples of their own.

Please submit a separate form for each dog being tested and mark the top "1 of X" (i.e., for four samples, 1 of 4, 2 of 4, etc.). If you have already sent a package with multiple samples, the lab will keep an eye out for multiples from the same person and make adjustments before electronic billing (if you notice a discrepency, just email them back and let them know).

- Breeders in the United States may send a cheque along with their samples to pay for their tests. Those submitting samples from outside the United States should check the "Bill owner electronically" option on the submission form. Once swabs are received, clients will be billed electronically. The University of Minnesota accepts electronic payment by Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express credit cards as well as debit cards.

*There is no test kit to order. Those submitting tests can purchase cheek swabs (also called Sterile Applicators) at some pharmacies, especially specialty pharmacies and medical supply stores that carry home health care products. You may also order them online from a variety of vendors, such as: www.amazon.com (try https://amzn.com/B000PWCGA0) www.ezswabs.com www.walgreens.com

PUBLIC EDUCATION

It Takes A Village

The question of what we can do to increase our numbers is not a new; but our response to this question needs to be.

I have launched social media accounts, Facebook, Twitter, and spread the news that if you use the hashtag #akcmanchesterterrier on Twitter and Instagram), it will be picked up by AKC and posted to their web page under their “Manchester Community” section which is a huge section of photos.

I have Introduction Cards available for any who ask (photo attached) and several people use them.

23 Public Education, Cont.

I’ve made memes, videos, copied popular themes (Pokemon Go with a TMT as the rarest of all Pokemon), we have charts and graphs, cute, sassy images all with the club’s information on them and begged them to be shared so that the public might see them. This type of social media campaign has worked superbly for the Corgi and the Shiba Inu.

It will take each of us putting out a small amount of effort to get the word back out there and show the world how great Manchesters are.

24 AMTC RESCUE CHAIR REPORT

Buddy’s Story

Bubby was found running down the street in North Carolina, after being burnt with chemicals.

The animal control officers were told that Buddy needed to be put down because of his burns. Heather Terpening and her co-worker decided to take Buddy home and treat his burns. Buddy was burned down to his back bone, his tail and ears were burnt. After caring for Buddy for six months, they wanted to turn him over to rescue instead of taking him to the shelter. Heather and I made contact by Facebook. Heather sent me pictures and I contacted Michelle Barlak, and she said yes that I could get him for rescue.

So on 06-18-2016 Buddy went into the AMTC rescue program. I contacted Cay Ireland and she was kind enough to go meet Heather in Raleigh NC to pick Buddy up. Then Cay transported Buddy and met me in NC. We were both very sad that Buddy had gone thru so much and he is such a sweet, loving boy. We could not understand how anyone could do that. I put Buddy in the car and to South Carolina we went. He was the perfect travel mate. When we got to my house, my guys were checking him out, and Buddy was just fine. He is a happy boy! He came in just like he had been living with us all his life.

25 AMTC RESCUE CHAIR REPORT, Cont.

I was very concerned about Buddy’s health. I talked with Michelle and she advised me on how the rescue works. I am so very happy that the AMTC has such a wonderful rescue program for our breed. I made Buddy an appointment at my vet (Cleveland Park Animal Hospital); when the doctor first saw Buddy he was also concern that he had orthopedic problems as well. Good news, when the x-ray results came back his was fine! They proceeded to do shots, blood work and made an appointment to be neutered and a dental. Buddy came thru all this with flying colors.

26 AMTC RESCUE CHAIR REPORT, Cont.

The time came to start looking for Buddy a forever home. I posted Buddy on the Manchester Terrier Rescue Facebook page, and WOW what a response we had! People were sharing and joining in to help Buddy find a home. Thanks everyone who shared and helped with passing on the information! It was so great to see everyone coming together! Jo Ann Emrick was so taken by Buddy that she sent him a very nice comfy bed from gooddogbeds.com.

Thank you Jo Ann! Kathy Nissen contacted someone who had contacted her about wanting an older Manchester, so Kathy told Molly about Buddy. Molly and Jerry had lost their standard Manchester due to health issues. His name was Buddy. Kathy put Molly and me in contact with each other; and Molly wanted Buddy to join her family. Thank you Kathy Nissen for telling Molly about Buddy and also for you generous donation to rescue for Buddy! Molly and Jerry Anderson adopted Buddy, who is now Little Buddy due to the first Buddy being a standard, into the Anderson Family! Molly also made a generous donation to rescue for Buddy.

27 AMTC RESCUE CHAIR REPORT, Cont.

Now to get Buddy transported Illinois, so I turned to the Manchester Rescue Facebook page. It was going to be over a holiday weekend, so I was wondering how this was going to work, due to people being on vacation. Again WOW, we had all of the legs of the transport coved. Buddy and I left South Carolina traveling to Knoxville, TN to meet Jerri Hobbs.

Jerri kindly volunteered to meet me in Knoxville keep Buddy overnight, then drive him to Cincinnati the next day. Jerri and I meet in Knoxville and was also able to have dinner with Richard and Cheryl Roach. Jerri brought her puppies along, and we all had a great time playing with the babies. We had a great time visiting as well. Then we said our goodbyes and we all started on ways back home. All was going great, until Jerri was about an hour from her house and got stuck in traffic. They had been a really bad accident, thank goodness it wasn’t Jerri involved, but she was not able to get home until very late.

28 AMTC RESCUE CHAIR REPORT, Cont.

Then next day Jerri started Buddy on his way to Cincinnati to meet with Deb Faulkner, who would keep Buddy overnight, taking him to his forever home in Illinois. We all fell in love with Buddy! He was just easy to live with. He loves everyone and never met a stranger.

Buddy’s personal Independence Day finally came on July 4th when Deb transported Buddy to Molly and Jerry Anderson in Illinois. The trip went great! Molly was happy to have her Little Buddy! I have been in contact with Molly and Buddy is settling in just fine. The first night Molly had Buddy’s bed at the foot of her bed. When they went to bed, Buddy pulled his blanket up onto Molly’s bed and slept beside Jerry. Now guess where Buddy sleeps? Buddy would cry out at times for no reason that you could determine. The vet said that he could be having flashbacks, poor guy. Molly said that he does not cry out to often anymore.

29 AMTC RESCUE CHAIR REPORT, Cont.

I just want to thank everyone for coming together for Buddy! AMTC, Michelle Barlak, Heather Terpening, Cay Ireland, JoAnn Emrick, Kathy Nissen, Jerri Hobbs, Deb Faulkner and Molly and Jerry Anderson. Without everyone, this would not have been able to happen for Buddy!!

Happy Independence Day Buddy! (submitted by Sherri Brock)

It has been a pretty slow year in District 5. We have a pretty small membership and only a couple people that are doing any showing at all. For that reason, I have not planned a District Specialty for 2016. I will need to start looking at shows that are in or very near other Districts that have more active members so we can have at least an entry at our Specialty.

I would like to wish everyone going to the Nationals this year, safe travel and big wins!! I will be going and look forward to seeing all of my Manchester friends, and hope to meet some new Manchester people that I will call friends. District 8 has been working very hard to provide us with a great Nationals. It looks like it will be another wonderful Nationals week of great dogs, great food, wonderful people and we will all go home with treasured memories. Hope to see you all in CA!!

District 6 (KY, TN, OK, AR, AL, MS, LA, TX)

Greetings to all,

As I compose this newsletter I realize that I have lots of good news to share. First, I have increased our Manchester yearly numbers by eight, having had 2 litters this year. It is a poop factory here at the Munafo house. I love to cuddle with them when they are not biting me!  I hope to get some of them out into the show ring by December. So excited! A new crop!

And then, of course there is the Nationals in California coming this September. It is always so nice to see everyone from all over the country; a little family reunion of sorts. The trophies are awesome. The banquets are always fun, with lots of items to bid on, awards to be given, accomplishments to be highlighted and past memories to spoken of. The district baskets that are bid on are so interesting since the come from all the different parts of the country. They each have their own local flare.

And then there are the dogs; all different types, shapes and sizes. Everyone outside of the breed think our Mannies all look alike but we certainly see the difference right down to the toenails! I love to observe the young pups coming into the ring and see the accomplishments made by breeders as they work to obtain the standards for the breed as it is written by the club. Watch and learn! Share and show! There is something for everyone. So come on out and be a part of it all! Oh, and there is the sightseeing!!! Can’t wait to see everyone!

Last but not least, (I just have to mention!) is our District 6 specialty show being held in Knoxville TN on November 5th with a supported entry on the 6th. We will be offering sweepstakes and veteran sweepstakes on Saturday. The entry fee for both sweepstakes is $22.00.

There will be an O/H series both days! We will have designated grooming space on second floor. After speaking to many folks, I am expecting majors at this show. We are offering up some very nice rosettes, trophies and prizes. As always there will be food involved! Carolyn and Dave Horowitz have graciously offered their home for a pot luck dinner on Saturday night, November 5th. Cheryl Roach, a local, suggests that you make hotel reservations ASAP as there is a University of Tennessee game that weekend.

We are hoping to make this a very memorable show so come on out and join us. The foothills of the Appalachian Mountains will be showing off her spectacular fall colors for our show this November! Hope to see you there!

District 8 (AK, WA, MT, OR, ID, NoCal, NoNev, UT)

Tuesday, August 9, 2016 Dear AMTC Members;

Woofstock AMTC District 8 Specialty

Since my last report, we held our district specialty in June in Vallejo, California. Much gratitude to Mr. David Kirkland for judging our specialty. He sent a lovely note post about his judging assignment which I have included, along with the results and some photos. We also had the chance to watch Taser and his handler, Sandy Svensen in rally and obedience. While he was the only entrant, he picked up some respectable scores. Sandy and Taser are a lovely team and I look forward to watching their success in the future. Congratulations to the winners of the June 2016 District 8 Specialty!

2016 AMTC National Specialty

My last report before the National Specialty. Time flies too quickly. I am so very proud to be among a great group of dedicated people. We are determined to make this an excellent National Specialty for all who attend. We have a lot of events planned for all of our MT breeders, owners, and exhibitors.

The National kicks off with an agility trial in conjunction with a local all-breed trial in Santa Rosa the weekend prior. Hopefully, you get the chance to arrive a little early to tour the San Francisco Bay Area. Don’t forget to stop by the hospitality room on Tuesday evening to pick up your Welcome Bag. Wednesday afternoon will come quickly, and we will be ready to show. The ring will be outdoors but is surrounded by shade trees. We are planning to have plenty of tents, grooming tables, and cold beverages for the entire weekend for all our Manchester folks to use and enjoy. We will be the only club on Wednesday, with no vendors available, so be sure to get your lunch order to Jeanette Tonini.

The weather in the Bay Area is unpredictable, so be prepared to dress in layers as it could be hot or cool. The National Specialty will be followed by two district specialties: District 8 on Thursday, September 15th and District 7 on Friday, September 16th. Barn Hunt will have six trials. Two trials each day, Friday through Sunday. The AMTC Supported National Obedience and Rally trials are on Saturday morning, followed by another in the afternoon, and one on Sunday.

For our juniors, we will have regular competitions for the show, but some other fun activities like Ice Cream Social Night and an art contest. We are offering several educational opportunities like the breeder’s and judge’s seminars, and a couple of health clinics.

Lastly, the first MTOY contest by invitation only – get your entries, write-ups, and songs to Robin Gates. Let’s get ready to have some fun!

51 AMTC District Governors Reports, Cont. District 8 (AK, WA, MT, OR, ID, NoCal, NoNev, UT), Cont.

It’s a four-show cluster held in Vallejo CA on the north shore of San Francisco Bay and hosted by the Lake County Kennel Club and the Contra Costa Kennel Club. It has a “hippie” theme and is one of the most relaxed and fun clusters in the country. The opportunity to see the dog world elites dressed in love beads and tie-dyed shirts is worth the price of admission alone.

52 AMTC District Governors Reports, Cont. District 8 (AK, WA, MT, OR, ID, NoCal, NoNev, UT), Cont.

However, it is not all peace, love and rock ‘n’ roll. Over the years Woofstock has evolved into a major competitive stop on the show calendar. This year the four shows have drawn 8,203 entries. Saturday’s Contra Costa Kennel Club show, at 2,453 entered, will be the largest in the country next week.

56 AKC DELEGATE’S REPORT

I need to apologize to you all for not sending a delegate’s report for the last newsletter. It wasn’t that I couldn’t, it was just that I couldn’t figure out exactly what to write. So, this report will cover both March’s meeting and June’s.

March’s meeting was the one at which we elect the new members of the Board of Directors. What made this meeting interesting was the number of people running for office, and the fact that there was more than one woman in the group. Nice change. The delegate’s running for office were: Linda Ayers Turner Knorr, Gretchen Bernardi, Thomas S. Powers, Patricia Cruz, Rita Biddle, William Feeney and Karilynne McAteer.

The newly elected members were: Patricia Cruz, William Feeney and Karolynne McAteer. Only Karolynne is new to the Board, both Pat and Bill were on the board, and for reasons known only to the nominating committee were not nominated again. Also, the only member of the board who has a dog with a back end title is Karolynne McAteer. So even though she can’t replace Pat Scully, at least she knows that dogs CAN do more than look gorgeous.

There were two amendments to be voted on at this meeting. The first amendment concerned allowing delegate judges to charge a fee of up to $150 as well as their expenses for judging. The amendment was defeated. So, delegate judges are still the best bargain in town. I don’t know how long that will last, but it’s nice for now.

The second amendment, yet again, dealt with events. They have at least one amendment presented at almost every assembly. This one dealt with creating a National Championship for two couple packs. Don’t ask me what it all means, Beagling is beyond my comprehension.

Now to June:

If there ever was an argument for the AKC having only three meetings per year, this assembly was a perfect example. We met. We heard a report on how well the AKC is doing, or not. The report, by and large was good, income was up, registrations were up. Marketplace was discussed, more under Parent Club report.

Since there has been much discussion of the DQ for bad behavior at shows, that was also discussed. Now, the dog must be DNA’ed immediately after the incident and then is required to leave the showgrounds. In order to be reinstated, the dog must again be DNA’ed and interviewed. The cost of reinstatement will be $500.

Parent’s Club Committee: has a new liaison person from the AKC. Mari-Beth O’Neill. For those of you who don’t know, in her childhood she owned and showed Toy Manchester Terriers, and yes, she is still an AMTC member. (Friends in high places - always a good thing). At the Parent’s Committee meeting, there was much discussion of the Marketplace. If you have a litter of puppies, it can be your best friend. If you are interested do go to Marketplace.AKC.org, it will give you more information than I can here with the limited time and space I have. Also, it probably will be far more accurate.

AKC DELEGATE’S REPORT, Cont.

Other than that, the meeting covered the usual things, with which I will not bore you. However, yet again group realignment reared its head. Yet again it is under discussion, and probably something will be done. When? Who know. How? Again, thy guess is as good as mine.

Roberta Berman, Your humble AKC delegate Juniors’ News!

Our Juniors are absolutely amazing!!!! Congratulations to Marit Alsager, Taylor Blankenship, Callie Caoua, Gabriel Jonas, Justin Shook, and Dante Zanotto – you all make us all so very very proud and bring wonderful positive attention to our breed!!

Hi Cheryl, Just contacting you to see if you could add some news I have to the newsletter. In regards to Juniors, I don't have very much news besides taking Reserve Best Junior at the Del Monte KCDS. However, I have been mainly focusing on showing my bred by puppies. My puppy Nymeria did an amazing job at the Woofstock Cluster.

58

Juniors’ News!

At the District 8 Specialty she took Best of Variety over the specials for a 5 point major. She then went on to finish going Best Opposite on Friday and took Best of Variety on Sunday. My other puppy Jon finished going Best of Variety out of the Bred By puppy class at the Del MonteKCDS, leaving both puppies to finish before 12 months. – Dante Zanotto

Taylor:

Taylor’s Airy was BOV for the 2 days we were in Kenner, LA. Airy also won OH Best in Show and picked up a toy group 4 and a toy group 2. Stan was BOV one day and picked up a OH Terrier group 1. Taylor also won Reserve Best Junior in Kenner.

Marit Alsager has successfully shown Nephrete, GCh Heaven Hi's Colorodo Gold CGC to her bronze grand championship. She also put a championship on her new dog co owned with Jerri Hobbs, Nantam Voyager, in 6 weeks. She is taking a 4 week break from shows to attend Blue Lake Fine Arts camp on a scholarship she won for her vocal talent, and to spend some time with her Grandfather.

News Release For Immediate Release AKC Canine Health Foundation Awards New Grants to Improve Diagnostics for Tick-Borne Diseases in Dogs

RALEIGH, N.C. (July 25, 2016) – The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to prevent, treat and cure diseases in all dogs, announces a second round of new grants awarded through its Tick-Borne Disease Initiative. This comprehensive Initiative addresses important health concerns that include Lyme disease, bartonellosis, and ehrlichiosis, through much-needed research in diagnostics, disease pathogenesis and prevalence.

Edward B. Breitschwerdt, DVM, DACVIM, of North Carolina State University, will study “Enhanced Testing for the Diagnosis of Bartonellosis in Dogs.” Bartonellosis is a potentially life-threatening zoonotic disease distributed throughout the world by approximately ten different Bartonella bacteria species. Bartonella bacteria are transmitted to dogs and humans by ticks, fleas, lice, mites, and sand flies. Due to a lack of sensitive and reliable diagnostic tests, definitive diagnosis of bartonellosis in dogs remains a significant problem. Because these bacteria invade cells and infect tissues throughout the body, this chronic intracellular infection is difficult to cure with currently used antibiotic regimens. Dr. Breitschwerdt and his team aim to develop improved blood tests for bartonellosis in dogs that can also be used for world-wide sero-epidemiological prevalence studies, and to establish early and accurate diagnosis.

Pedro Paul Diniz, DVM, PhD, of Western University of Health Sciences, will study “Broad-Range Detection of Canine Tick-Borne Disease and Improved Diagnostics Using Next-Generation Sequencing.” Currently available tests for vector-borne diseases in dogs rely on previously known DNA sequences of each pathogen, with little room for detecting new or emerging organisms. This results in false negatives for tick-borne diseases, leaving veterinarians and dog owners frustrated by a lack of definitive diagnosis. Using an innovative approach, Dr. Diniz and team will employ next-generation sequencing (NGS) to overcome the limitations of current diagnostic technology. Testing samples from dogs naturally exposed to tick-borne diseases, NGS will detect not only new organisms but also characterize genetic differences among known organisms. The resulting dataset of a large

81 number of DNA sequences of known tick-borne organisms and previously undetected organisms in naturally-infected dogs will support the development of diagnostic tools to simultaneously advance canine and human health.

In addition to these two new grants, earlier this year the AKC Canine Health Foundation awarded three grants through its Tick-Borne Disease Initiative. The three grants address Lyme disease, vector-borne disease testing for canine blood donors, and ehrlichiosis.

Funding for CHF grants comes from a number of sources, including: corporations, dog clubs, and individuals who are committed to the betterment of canine health through scientific research. During 2016, all donations to the Tick-Borne Disease Initiative are being matched dollar-for-dollar by the American Kennel Club (up to $250,000). Make an impact and double your donation today: www.akcchf.org/ticks.

About CHF For more than 20 years, the Raleigh, NC-based AKC Canine Health Foundation has leveraged the power of science and research to improve the lives of dogs and their people. The Foundation works to prevent, treat, and cure diseases that impact all dogs, while providing professional information and resources for a new breed of dog owner. 102 First Annual Manchester Terrier of the Year

Join us for our new Manchester Terrier of the Year (MTOY)Competition Competition for the Top 10 Breed and All-Breed, Best of Variety Specialty Winners, Westminster Kennel Club BOV Winners, Eukanuba BOV Winners and Group Winners from January 2015 to May 2016 that are owned by AMTC members. The competition will be judged by a Multi-Breed Judge, Breeder and Professional Handler selected the day of the event. This event was initiated to acknowledge the Manchester Terriers of both varieties that made the greatest contribution to breed recognition in the conformation ring from January 2015 to May 2016. The competition is a dressy event open to members and participants of the AMTC National Specialty. Date: Thursday, September 15, 2016 Time: 7:30pm Location: Staybridge Suites Fairfield, CA

Be a part of American Manchester Terrier Club History!!! All rules and guidelines are posted on the AMTC website MTOY FAQ 1. Is the Manchester Terrier of the Year Competition just like a regular dog show? a. The Manchester Terrier of the year is similar to a dog show in that the dog will enter, go around the ring, be put on the table, be examined and do the down and back. The difference is each dog will enter the ring individually and automatically go around the ring. On the table, each judge will do an individual exam. (see #4 in the rules for types of judges.) The judges will complete a score sheet after they examine the dog and watch the dog go down and back (see #5.)

2. What should we write about our dogs? Will this be read out loud? a. You can write the 3 or 4 lines that best describe your dog’s show career. Major wins, number of wins, type of wins or performance accomplishments. It will be read at the end of the event. It will also be published in the annual with the picture supplied. The annuals will be sold at the competition.

3. What type of music do we need to pick out? a. Whichever song will sound the best as your dog shows. Also, you will need to bring the CD of the selected and accepted music.

4. How many dogs will be exhibited at a time? a. One dog will be exhibited and examined at a time. Only one judge will examine a dog so as to not overwhelm the entries

5. Will Standards and Toys be shown at the same time? a. Toys will be shown & then Standards. All will be brought back in & the top 2 for each variety will be called to the center.

6. Can anyone show the dog or does it have to be one of the owners? a. Anyone can show the dog and one person can show several dogs as we will allow time for changing dogs. When all dogs come back in and one person showed several dogs, they will just need to have someone bring the dogs back in for the Top 2 announcement.

7. Can entries be paid via PayPal? a. We can only accept payment via check mailed to the address provided in the packet

8. Can I enter and be in the annual even if my dog will not be attending a. Yes, your entry guarantees you will be in the annual and receive the medallion as long as your dog’s write up and entry fee is received prior to the entry close date of August 20, 2016. Medallions will not be mailed, they must be picked up at the event.

108 NEWS AND NOTES, Cont.

Submitted by Jo Ann Emrick with permission.

Just a general rant to my dog show people. We all know that every breed has their problems with breeders doing it "right" and doing it "wrong". While it may be subjective as to what extent something is right or wrong in a breeding program, but I think we can all agree on several factors; and please feel free to interject if you think I am off base:

In no particular order of importance: 1. You breed for yourself, not for profit. Anyone who is making money breeding is doing it wrong.

2. You are breeding only for better dogs, not more dogs; you are breeding for the best dogs, dogs to go on to the ring to be recognized for its merits.

3. If you aren't exhibiting you have no business breeding. Period. You will never learn proper structure, movement, breed standards, health and temperament until your breeding stock is evaluated and you are taught by mentors in the dog world; the people who have been doing it for years. The people who can teach you things you will never learn from a book. Knowledge that can only be gained by experience and years of it.

4. Understanding the written standard for your breed, backwards and forwards, and not changing the standard in your kennel to suit your breeding program. Standards are written in the image of what is perceived to be the "perfect dog" . You breed to the standard, not alter it in your mind or your dogs to suit your taste or how YOU think it should be. I'm not talking about "type" either. Basic breed standard.

5. Heath test your dogs for everything outlined by your parent club. Don't breed them until they are tested, even if they have a CH or GCH in front of their name. Cull dogs with problems from your lines. Do not knowingly breed dogs with problems. It’s unethical, wrong and not worth it.

6. No such thing as a perfect dog. All dogs have faults. If you can't find the bad in your dogs along with the good, you need to stop breeding. Refer to #4

7. With legislation coming down hard on the breeders who are doing things the right way as opposed to the wrong way, we need to start holding those accountable for doing it "wrong". Keeping quiet is causing damage. It’s a lot easier to sit back and keep your mouth shut. Do things the hard way. Open your mouth and stand up for your breed.

8. Be a mentor to others. To juniors and newbies. Don't do it for them, do it for your breed. You owe it to your breed.

9. With exceptions of course, as a general rule, if your dog can't make it in the show ring, it shouldn't be bred. Breed your dogs once they have earned their CH title.

109 NEWS AND NOTES, Cont.

10. Do not sell breeding stock to novice people who will not do right by your dogs. Research every buyer and have contracts. Spay and neuter anything being sold as a pet before it leaves you if possible or have a contract with no papers. Selling breeding stock to anyone who will pay your price is WRONG. We need to protect the lines of our breeds; years and years of careful breeding should not be sold to someone who is back yard breeding. This behavior is despicable.

Stand behind your dogs. Pets or show dogs.

11. Be a good sportsman. Be polite and kind.

I feel very fortunate to have started off over 20 years ago, in a different breed that I am in now, with amazing mentors who taught me how to do things the RIGHT way. I am sad to say that had I started in my current breed instead, I would be lost. I wouldn't have a clue of how things are supposed to be done.

As self righteous as it may sound, I have never seen a larger group of people in any other breed who are doing it WRONG. I did not set the standards, I just follow what I was taught. It breaks my heart to say that and it breaks my heart to see it going on and on.

Whatever your breed is, take a stand. Show your love for your breed by holding those accountable for unethical behavior and call those out who are not doing it right. Rant over and thanks for reading :)

Editor’s Note: If you’d like to respond to this rant, please email that response to [email protected].

110 Leptospirosis in Dogs

Judith Fleischaker DVM,MS

Leptospirosis is a disease caused by a spirochete bacteria Leptospira. There are more than 200 different types of this bacteria identified world wide. In the United States there are 4 primary types that have been identified in domestic dogs.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease meaning it can be transmitted between humans and animals. Most human infections are from recreational activities in contaminated water. There were 6 reported cases of infection in humans from exposure to infected pets in 2015. Leptospirosis is carried by wildlife, including deer, raccoons, rats and other rodents and bats.

Unfortunately Leptospirosis is not a reportable disease in many states and is poorly reported or undiagnosed in states that require reporting. So there is no truly accurate incidence reports. There are 3 current studies being conducted in Michigan, Pennsylvania and California trying to more accurately identify the incidence in dogs. In 2015 there were 72 reported cases in Michigan with the majority in suburban and urban areas. There were 31 confirmed deaths in dogs resulting from Leptospirosis infections.

How is the infection spread?

Dogs can be infected from their mucous membranes or open wounds coming in contact with infected urine, urine contaminated soil or water, food and bedding, or through a bite wound or ingesting an infected carcass. It can also be spread through semen from infected animals and cross the placenta to puppies of infected moms.

What are symptoms?

The bacteria can affect many organ with the kidneys and liver being the primary organs affected. Liver failure and kidney failure are not uncommon with leptospirosis. Symptoms can include, lack of appetite, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, increased water intake, increased urination, weakness, muscle or joint pain, eye pain and inflammation ( uveitis), and heart murmur . As these symptoms are common to many diseases the disease can be misdiagnosed unless the animal is specifically tested for Leptsirosis.

111

NEWS AND NOTES, Cont.

How is the disease diagnosed?

There are several tests available for testing for Leptospirosis. An in hospital screening snap test tests for antibodies. The gold standard of tests is the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Most labs will test for 6-23 serovars common in the United States. Paired samples at the time of the infection ( acute) and 2 weeks after ( convalescent) are ideal. A 4 fold increase from the first to the second sample is considered a definitive diagnosis for leptospirosis. Once again very few veterinarians think about testing for this disease and many owners decline testing for the disease so it is often undiagnosed. In a survey in Michigan of 98 hospitals in southeast Michigan only 37 of these hospitals routinely test for Leptospirosis in dogs presented with elevated kidney or liver values.

How do you treat Leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis is treated in the acute phase with aggressive IV fluids, antibiotics, and antiemetics. Despite aggressive treatment some dogs will go into irreversible kidney failure and kidney shut down. In general the antibiotic of choice in the acute phase is a penicillin derivative which can stop shedding of bacteria in the urine in 24 hours. To eliminate a carrier state a tetracycline derivative such as Doxycycline is given for about 4 weeks. It is important when giving doxycycline to follow with some food or water. Doxycycline in the esophagus can cause esophageal stricture.

How do you prevent Leptospirosis?

The ideal way to prevent Leptospirosis is to prevent exposure. Preventing exposure would including avoiding contact with other animals, avoiding contact with areas where other animals have urinated, and preventing any wildlife or rodents ( rats or mice) from entering the area where your dogs live. For most of us who are active in dog sports this is near impossible. And even if your dogs stay at home they could be exposed to wildlife urine. I personally live in a suburban area and have raccoons routinely in my yard. Raccoons are known carriers of Leptospirosis. Manchesters are bred to kill critters and mine have routinely killed squirrels, mice, moles, opossum, and raccoons that have wandered into their fenced yard.

For those of us that cannot prevent exposure, vaccines are our best defense. Vaccines have components of the bacteria that create an immune response. In 1970s-1990s many vaccine contained the whole bacteria and often cell fragments and a potent adjuvant that could cause adverse immune responses. Because of this, the Leptospirosis vaccines have gotten a bad reputation for causing reactions and many breeders stopped vaccinating for this disease. Current vaccines have purified subunits and don’t use mercury adjuvents so there is much less likelihood of a vaccine reaction. Boehringer Ingelhiem (Duramune and Leptovax 4/C), and Zoetis (Vanguard) both produce Leptospirosis component vaccines that cover the 4 serovars most diagnosed in dogs.

If you are vaccinating your dogs I recommend two vaccines about 2-4 weeks apart the first time and then a vaccine annually. You can test titers rather than automatically vaccinating each year, but this can be somewhat expensive. If you have a dog diagnosed with an immune mediated disease I would discourage from vaccinating and instead aim for an exposure free environment.

112

NEWS AND NOTES, Cont.

The bottom line is Leptospirosis can be a fatal disease. Your choices for preventing this disease are vaccinations or avoiding exposure. The reality is if you are traveling to dog shows or other dog sport events, or walking your dogs there is a chance for your dog to be exposed to this disease.

Thoughts we don't want to think of or talk about - but should: No matter how old you are, have you thoroughly planned where your Manchesters would go if something happened to you? Who would take care of them? Do the new owners know that they will be responsible for these babies until the end of their lives?

Are their names on the Manchester's papers - or do you have transfer papers pre-signed and undated so they could assume ownership without delay? Will they have the funds to take care of your babies and know who their vet was?

Maggie and Jiggs From Bringing Up Father, edited by Herb Galewitz; Bonanza Books, a division of Crown Publishers, Inc. Library of Congress 73-5190. For 42 years, until his death in 1954 George McManus delighted millions of readers with his cartoons of Maggie and Jiggs.

After studying the drawings of the little dog FiFi, we are convinced she was a Manchester Terrier and he was drawing from life. He must have owned a Manchester, he captured so many poses. Smart Man! (From Jo Ann Emrick – more to come)

Can you spot the Manchester in the comic on the next page?

I’d like to prolife at least one member each time – and would especially like to feature those of you that have been with the club or our breed for a long time. Please feel free to submit a story and pictures please if there is someone you’d like to feature. Things to ask: Where did you get your first Manchester from? Why and how old were you? Why did you start showing or competing if you do? Why do you do keep doing what you do?

Member Profile - Ruthye Silver Deer Park Toy Manchesters Jacksonville, Florida

Editor’s note - Ruthye contacted me for some other reason and I said “Hey, who are you”? Here’s her response! I think it’s just delightful!!!

I have been a member since 1981??? (got my first TMT in 1969) and have lived in District 2 since 1988. I would have to write a book......

A story......

I went to my first National Specialty in ???????? 1970 or 1971??????????

My little male who weighed 4 1/2 lbs if he was in love, and 5 1/2 if he wasn’t, went Winners. Only because everyone was telling me (including the judge) what to do and where to stand (I was a complete novice)......

There was a total of 29 dogs there, mostly toys.

Then, they judged the standards and a guy from Michigan/Minnesota/whatever entered a male who was gray not black and tan.

There was an uproar.. They almost attacked him. And, the judge disqualified him on incorrect color.

I can’t quite remember if that show was where I met MarieBeth O'Neill and her father, Charles O'Neill who was on the Board of AKC.... The O'Neills bred for years and then MarieBeth went into TMTs, she still works for AIKC.

No, we're not close personal friends, I bred to her Cheddar of Toy when he was 10 yrs old.

How's that for history???? And I still have a dozen running around. When you get old in my house, you retire & live in Florida.

And, know anybody who needs a show quality TMT male puppy - 6 mo old & had all his shots. His brother won both days on his first weekend out...... An older brother, 9 months old, same Daddy - different Mommas.

Engraving titled: "Topsy and the School Keys"

Published in Harper's Weekly June 17, 1871 - Submitted by: Jo Ann Emrick

One of the most sagacious little dogs in London belongs to Mr. Nice, the keeper of Highbury Chapel. "Topsy" is not an idle dog, she is busy from Monday morning through Saturday night; for what with keys to watch, doors to attend to, and so many other things beside her time is fully occupied.

116 NEWS AND NOTES, Cont.

Sunday is "Topsy's" rest day and right glad she seems not to be expected to bark, nor do any work on Sunday, for animals as well as men require, and are entitled to one day of rest in the week.

"Topsy's" master had her trained to distinguish the difference between Sunday and the week day, and if a stranger were to see her on a Sunday, he would imagine that she was ill, for she lies down quietly in her bed, quite indifferent as to who comes in and who goes out.

She knows that she must not make a noise, or bark at people that come to the chapel or the school on that day.

Mr. Nice has a fine cat which lives in the same room as "Topsy," and she pays all due respect to Pussy. When the cat has her milk, "Topsy" sits quietly by to watch her drink it, and then when Pussy has finished, "Topsy" expects the saucer filled for herself. If she is kept waiting for her milk longer than she thinks right, she rings the bell-that is, she taps the saucer; and if the first tapping is not attended to, she taps again and again until she has due attention!

"Topsy" is so polite that she cannot be persuaded to touch her milk until the cat has hers!

About 8 o'clock in the morning she may be seen sitting in the window watching for the boy who calls for the keys of the day schools. These keys are "Topsy's" particular charge. She will not allow them to be taken from their place on the wall unless it be by her master, or by the person accustomed to give them up at night; and if brought in and not hung up in their place at once, "Topsy" gets them, if they are left any where within reach, and hides them underneath the carpet. She then sits by them, and cries very pitifully until Mr. or Mrs. Nice steps forward and hangs them up in their usual place.

"Topsy" however has no objection to the keys being taken from their place on the Lord's Day morning. On that morning, she will allow any of the teachers to take them off the nail without the slightest hindrance, or without even looking after them.

"Topsy" is very affectionate and sympathizing; if at any time her master or mistress be unwell or in trouble, she tries her best to comfort them by licking their face and hands; and if at any time she has offended, and is spoken to crossly, she holds out her paw, and looks into their face so pitifully as much to say "Please do shake hands with me and be friends." It is no wonder that "Topsy" has many friends who call in to see her and shake hands with her.

The affectionate little creature never seems content to lie down in her bed at night without first putting out her paw and shaking hands with her master; it is her "good-night."

The high training of this beautiful dog reflects the greatest credit on her kind hearted master.
