Downing State Representative . .William “Smitty” Pignatelli Community Profile Statement: The Town of Sheffield is located in the Housatonic River Valley at the southern end of Berkshire County. With two distinct villages, Sheffield and Ashley Falls, the Town’s development pattern has been greatly influenced by its physical fea- tures: the Housatonic River and its wide floodplain; the Schenob Brook wetland complex; and the steep slopes of the Berkshire Hills on the east and the Taconic Range on the west. The oldest town in Berkshire County, the community has maintained its rich historical character. Noted for its deep agricultural soils, much of Sheffield remains open and in agricultural production. The combination of wide-open river valley, mountain vistas and active farmland, residents feel makes Sheffield one of the most beautiful towns in the Commonwealth. Dr. Anil Chandra Seth will talk about his search for big black holes at the centers of small galaxies using some of the largest tele- scopes on Earth and in space. Seth, an assistant professor of physics and astronomy at the University, will present an illustrated discussion of some of the compelliing mysteries of space and the progress being made in our understanding of them. Anil Chandra Seth Seth summarizes his research this way: "I study the formation and evolution of nearby galaxies by detecting individ- ual stars and clusters of stars whose ages, composition, and motions can be measured. I focus particularly on Hubble Space Telescope understanding the cen- ters of galaxies and the black holes and massive star clusters we find there." The professor will speak at the November 10 luncheon. His presentation promises to be informative, interpretive — simply "out of this world." Please join us. El Titanic fue, en su tiempo, el barco de pasajeros más grande y lujoso del mundo, seguido por el RMS Olympic. Your friendship has been the source of tremendous encouragement to everyone of us who have a hand in the stewardship of the College. I am happy to report some of our accomplishments during the past year. It has been a year of consolidation of important cirriculum changes and strengthening of our academic programs. Our students have given evidence of excellent schohlstic progress. Faculty qualifications and experience have been recognized by salary increases that meet competitive levels. Scholarship aid has been greatly increased. Our Long Range Plan has been developed, charting the course of the College to 1970. And fund-raising for a new Natatorium, the first of 17 proposed buildings and facilities, is nearing completion, with building scheduled to begin this fall. A special vote of thanks is due to those of you who have also given of your time and effort in securing these gifts and developing new friends for the College.
