  • Richard Strauss's Ariadne Auf Naxos
Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos - A survey of the major recordings by Ralph Moore Ariadne auf Naxos is less frequently encountered on stage than Der Rosenkavalier or Salome, but it is something of favourite among those who fancy themselves connoisseurs, insofar as its plot revolves around a conceit typical of Hofmannsthal’s libretti, whereby two worlds clash: the merits of populist entertainment, personified by characters from the burlesque Commedia dell’arte tradition enacting Viennese operetta, are uneasily juxtaposed with the claims of high art to elevate and refine the observer as embodied in the opera seria to be performed by another company of singers, its plot derived from classical myth. The tale of Ariadne’s desertion by Theseus is performed in the second half of the evening and is in effect an opera within an opera. The fun starts when the major-domo conveys the instructions from “the richest man in Vienna” that in order to save time and avoid delaying the fireworks, both entertainments must be performed simultaneously. Both genres are parodied and a further contrast is made between Zerbinetta’s pragmatic attitude towards love and life and Ariadne’s morbid, death-oriented idealism – “Todgeweihtes Herz!”, Tristan und Isolde-style. Strauss’ scoring is interesting and innovative; the orchestra numbers only forty or so players: strings and brass are reduced to chamber-music scale and the orchestration heavily weighted towards woodwind and percussion, with the result that it is far less grand and Romantic in scale than is usual in Strauss and a peculiarly spare ad spiky mood frequently prevails.

He has worked for a number of specialist labels, including Pearl, Biddulph, Romophone and Music & Arts. Three of his transfers have been Great Opera Recordings nominated for Gramophone Awards. A pianist by training, his passions are music, history and working on projects. He has found a way to combine all three in the transfer of historical recordings. Ludwig Van Obert-Thorn describes himself as a ‘moderate interventionist’ rather than a ‘purist’ or ‘re-processor,’ unlike those who apply significant additions and make major changes to the acoustical qualities of old recordings. His BEETHOVEN philosophy is that a good transfer should not call attention to itself, but rather allow the performances to be heard (1770-1827) with the greatest clarity. There is no over-reverberant ‘cathedral sound’ in an Obert-Thorn restoration, nor is there the tinny bass and piercing mid-range of many ‘authorised’ commercial issues. He works with the cleanest available 78s, and Fidelio consistently achieves better results than restoration engineers working with the metal parts from the archives of the Opera in Two Acts modern corporate owners of the original recordings.

  • Strauss' Capriccio
Richard Strauss’ Capriccio - A survey of the discography by Ralph Moore Strauss’ swansong opera Capriccio is not especially well represented in the catalogue; of the 22 complete recordings listed in the CLOR catalogue, only around a dozen have ever been available on CD and the rest were on video. Of those CD issues, several are no longer available and only three are studio recordings; two are radio broadcasts and the remainder are live or live composite stage performances. I consider here ten recordings, including all three of those studio accounts. The libretto was based on an original concept by Stefan Zweig, who had fled to the USA after the rise of the Nazis and committed suicide earlier in the year of the opera’s premiere, 1942. It was further developed by his successor as Strauss’ librettist, Josef Gregor, then Strauss himself took it over before passing it to his conductor friend Clemens Krauss – incidentally, possessor of one of the most blatant comb-overs in history - who completed it with continued input from the composer. The text is witty and more enjoyable if the libretto is to hand or you speak German. Like Strauss’ domestic comedy Intermezzo, Capriccio is wordy and conversational, but its intellectual and philosophical content is certainly higher and couched in some of the most sublime music Strauss ever penned. As a result, it is more popular and frequently performed than other of his late works. It is a vehicle for a supreme singer-actress with a creamy voice and a gift for enlivening text; noted performers who made recordings include Krauss’ second wife, Viorica Ursuleac, Lisa Della Casa, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Gundula Janowitz, Kiri Te Kanawa and, more recently, Renée Fleming.

HISTORICAL REISSUES SCHUBERT: Die schone Miillerin; Winterreise; Schwanengesang. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, baritone; Gerald Moore, piano. EMI 127-01764/66, 3 discs. Returning to the first Fischer-Dieskau-Moore Schubert cycle record ings, I have tried to turn back the clock and listen without reference to their long list of later performances. My first impression of Fischer-Dieskau was from the old Fritz Lehmann Saint Matthew Passion recording, in which he sang the Christus. I was enough impressed to become an avid collector of his recordings until they became too numerous for me. My first opportunity to hear him in the flesh was in Edinburgh in 1953, when he and Moore gave a Beethoven recital. Needless to say, I was present at his New York debut, Winterreise sung without interruption and without encores. Few singers of any period have been able to hold an audience so spellbound. It was in this frame of mind that I first heard this recording of Die schone Mullerin. The date of recording is given on the container - 3 and 7 October 1951. At 26 Fischer-Dieskau was already well established as a lieder singer of the first rank. We do not know how much time and study had gone into these songs, but presumably he felt he had arrived at his definitive interpretation. The records reveal a fresh young voice and a thoughtful approach. He presents a gentle apprentice miller, self centered and reserved, vigorous and unsophisticated. I like the jaunti ness of Das Wandern and the way both fischer-Dieskau and Moore make the contrasts among the stanzas without jarring the musical line.
