The was established by one of the greatest sculptors of the twentieth century. Today it is the largest artist-endowed grant-giving foundation in Europe and operates across two venues in the UK. The Foundation is headquartered at Henry Moore Studios & Gardens in Hertfordshire where visitors can appreciate the artist’s former home, studios and see his monumental bronzes in the landscape as Moore desired. The Henry Moore Institute in is one of the world’s leading centres for the study of , offering a programme of exhibitions and complementary research and engagement activities that animate the programme.

We want to inspire and inform audiences of all ages and backgrounds, whether they have an interest in the arts, are studying sculpture or visiting with their family for a day out. We aim to grow the visitor numbers at both our venues; to extend our reach to worldwide audiences through international touring of our collection and our online resources; to enhance the position of Moore as a pre-eminent British artist; and to attract the best possible applicants to our grants programme. We are looking for a Head of Marketing & Communications to join the senior management team to develop and deliver the strategic marketing/comms vision to help us achieve these bold ambitions.

The successful candidate will be a graduate or equivalent with a passion for arts marketing and audience development; and a track record in setting and meeting ambitious targets. With extensive experience in leading multi-dimensional campaigns within the cultural sector, you will have an in depth understanding of arts media and PR as well as excellent knowledge of the full range of digital marketing channels and the key principles of branding. Combining excellent project management with the ability to enthuse and inspire others, you will have a demonstrable track record in the formulation, leading and monitoring of strategic plans that engage broad and diverse audiences.

2 About the Henry Moore Foundation

1. Introduction

“Henry Moore changed the way we see sculpture. His Foundation continues to do so today.”

The Henry Moore Foundation was established by one of the greatest sculptors of the twentieth century. Today it is the largest artist-endowed grant-giving foundation in Europe. At the Foundation, we would like as many people as possible to enjoy and appreciate sculpture and in particular the work of Henry Moore. We want to inspire and inform people of all ages and backgrounds, whether they have an interest in the arts, are studying sculpture or visiting with their family for a day out. We want to extend our reach to worldwide audiences through international partnerships and touring of our collection; to encourage the study of sculpture; and to support the development of sculpture through our grants programme. We have bold ambitions that require us to capitalise on our assets in order to achieve these aims.

The Henry Moore Foundation is a registered charity, founded by the artist in 1977, in the last decade of his life, to encourage public appreciation of the visual arts, and in particular the works of Henry Moore. Our primary objectives are to preserve Moore's legacy at his home in Hertfordshire and through exhibitions of the Henry Moore Collections worldwide; supporting the study of sculpture and research at the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds; and awarding grants to sculpture projects in the UK and abroad.

2. Henry Moore Studios & Gardens, Perry Green

Perry Green is the small hamlet in rural East Hertfordshire where Henry Moore made his home. Moore lived in Hoglands with his family for nearly half a century and created his extraordinary , prints and drawings in the various studios within the grounds. In 1977 Perry Green became the headquarters of the Henry Moore Foundation.

Visitors to Henry Moore Studios & Gardens can experience Moore’s home and studios and enjoy his monumental bronze sculptures sited in the natural environment as he preferred. There are 72 acres of beautiful countryside estate, from natural meadows and woodland to formal gardens, where visitors can appreciate Moore’s work.

Perry Green is also home to the Foundation’s large collection of Moore’s work from maquettes to monumental bronzes, from carvings to plasters and from drawings to tapestries. The Foundation organises a busy programme of national and international loans and exhibitions each year, taking the Henry Moore collections to thousands of people worldwide.

The registered office of the Henry Moore Foundation is in Perry Green, where the HR, finance and central services are based.

3. Henry Moore Institute, Leeds

The Henry Moore Institute is a world-recognised centre for the study of sculpture in the heart of Leeds. An award-winning exhibitions venue, research centre, library and sculpture archive, the Institute hosts a year-round programme of exhibitions, conferences and lectures, as well as developing research and publications, to expand the understanding and scholarship of historical and contemporary sculpture.

Together with the Institute manages the Leeds sculpture collection; a partnership that has built one of the most important public collections of British Sculpture,

3 second only to the collection. The Institute also houses and maintains the Leeds Museums & Galleries archive of sculptors' papers. The archive is closely related to the Leeds sculpture collection and the Henry Moore Institute library. Together they provide an important research facility to enable a greater understanding of the history and practice of sculpture. As a part of the Henry Moore Foundation, the Henry Moore Institute leads on the study of sculpture, placing it centrally within current art historical scholarship and actively encouraging new research.

4. Moore on Tour

The Foundation has a large collection of Moore’s work from maquettes to monumental bronzes, from carvings to plasters and from drawings to tapestries. We organise a busy programme of national and international loans and exhibitions each year, taking the Henry Moore collections to thousands of people worldwide.

5. Henry Moore Grants

The grants programme has been developed with the wishes of our founder very much in mind, specifically to encourage the public appreciation of visual art, particularly sculpture. Our aim is to promote the development of sculpture, in exhibitions, commissions, collections publications, fellowships, research and development and conferences, through grants to arts organisations. As the largest grant-making artist-endowed foundation in Europe, the Foundation’s grants play an increasingly significant role in today’s challenging climate of funding for the visual arts.

While the lion’s share of our grants are awarded to sculpture projects organised by galleries and institutions, a specific proportion is awarded for Fellowships. This is the only way in which individuals benefit directly and derives from Henry Moore’s own experience having been awarded a scholarship to travel to Italy in 1924. He recognised the invaluable support a small grant can make to the ability to gain new experiences and opportunities.

6. Foundation Finances

The Foundation is privileged to be in a stable financial position, being largely financed by an endowment established by our founder. However, income generated from visitor admissions, retail, corporate hires and weddings, is vital in enabling us to deliver the Foundation’s aims and ambitions, so financial targets are monitored carefully.

7. Aims

Henry Moore established the Foundation to encourage public appreciation of the visual arts, particularly sculpture, and to preserve the artist’s legacy. Today, we seek to deliver this objective through the following core ambitions:

a) Deepen and broaden the understanding and appreciation of the work of Henry Moore for both new and established audiences, nationally and internationally, through a programme of exhibitions and loans from the Foundation’s collections; b) Lead the world in Moore scholarship and act as guardians of his home and collections;

4 c) Maintain pre-eminence in the field of sculpture studies through the creation of a meaningful and balanced programme of exhibitions, displays, publications, events and research opportunities; d) Nurture and develop partnerships to increase the reach and resources of the Foundation; e) Support the advancement of sculpture by giving financial support to exhibitions; publications; research and acquisitions; f) Raise awareness of the Foundation and build relationships with a range of audiences, nationally and internationally, to grow actual and virtual visitor numbers.

These aims inform strategic decision-making and the allocation of resources to help achieve our ambitions.

About the Position

6. Principal Aims of Role

The Head of Marketing & Communications leads the development and delivery of the Foundation’s strategic marketing and communications plan across two venues in the UK. Serving as a member of the strategic management team, the post-holder is responsible for raising awareness of the Foundation, maintaining and enhancing its position within the national and international arts and academic sectors, and building relationships to attract and grow a diverse range of audiences.

7. Job Description . As a member of the senior management team, support the Director and Chief Operating Officer in developing strategy and policy for the Foundation, contributing to long term planning - specifically the five year plan. . Provide strategic direction for the marketing department through the development, execution and monitoring of an annual marketing and communication strategy and audience development plan. . Conduct research to inform and identify relevant insights and audience segments. . Set and monitor visitor targets; work with programmers and curators to strategically inform choices that help ensure that visitor targets, including diverse audiences, are achieved. . Support the marketing managers in the development of marketing and communications campaigns for the Foundation’s programmes and commercial activities, ensuring these are aligned with the strategic goals of the organisation and are designed to reach target and diverse audiences and meet business objectives. . Lead on the development and effective implementation of a PR strategy and production of annual PR plan to enhance and promote the national and international profile of the Henry Moore Foundation, generating media interest in the Foundation and its activities, and maintaining close relationships with target media. . Monitor, evaluate and report on marketing and communications campaigns and audience data at both venues. . Create opportunities to promote the Foundation’s international touring activities and Grants scheme, through networking events, media opportunities and reciprocal marketing activity with sector bodies.

5 . Represent the Foundation externally, networking with stakeholders, pursuing sector opportunities, such as awards, and driving forward partnership opportunities. . Ensure that the marketing and communications function stays at the cutting edge of new trends in digital marketing and communications. . Manage the development of the Foundation’s website and ensure consistency across other digital and social channels, taking advantage of trends and technology developments to maximise the Foundation’s digital presence. . Oversee any filming and photography by third parties that directly promotes the Foundation and its programmes, exploiting opportunities wherever appropriate (not including commercial hires that are managed by the Enterprise Department). . Support senior staff in media interactions and dealing with crisis communications as required. . Act as brand guardian ensuring consistent use of the Foundation’s brand guidelines in all marketing communications material across the organisation, including signage and acknowledgements by grant recipients. . Develop effective internal communications strategies to ensure staff teams at both sites understand the core values and brand mission of the organisation. . Ensure that the Foundation (and particularly the Institute) plays a key role in the development of Sculpture International. . Lead on significant marketing relationships such as Visit Herts and Welcome to Yorkshire. . Analyse and respond to developments in the gallery and museum sector, keeping colleagues informed of trends among cultural institutions and in key markets. . Attend and contribute to meetings of the Strategic Management Team and the management team meetings at each venue. . Produce written reports for Trustee Board meetings and committees, and attend as required. . Provide effective leadership and management of the marketing and communications team to support them in achieving high-end results. . Manage all relevant budgets associated with the duties of the post. . Any other duties that may reasonably be required.

10. Person Specification The following experience, skills and attributes are required to fulfil this role:

6 Qualifications: • Educated to degree level (or equivalent) • Marketing qualification (desirable) Experience: • Previous experience as a marketing and communications leader of multi- dimensional campaigns within the cultural sector • In depth understanding of the key principles of branding • Comprehensive up-to-date knowledge and experience of media and PR developments within the arts sector, ideally at an international level • Experienced in briefing and influencing a range of press and media contacts to achieve positive news • An understanding of, and commitment to, issues of diversity and inclusion, with experience of creating marketing initiatives that engage broad and diverse audiences • Experience across the range of digital and e-marketing channels, including content marketing and CRM • Line Management experience (multi-locations desirable) Skills and Abilities: • Ability to work collaboratively with a range of internal and external stakeholders • Creative thinker with an enthusiastic and entrepreneurial approach • Proven ability to monitor success through gathering, analysing and reporting • Excellent organisational skills, especially the ability to prioritise workload and to meet tight deadlines • Ability to work positively as part of a team while also able to initiate and drive own projects • Resilient with the ability to deal with complexity and ambiguity • Proven leader, with excellent communication, influencing and interpersonal skills • A diplomatic and pragmatic problem solver, always calm under pressure • Demonstrable skills in planning, monitoring and evaluation • Proven ability to negotiate contracts and manage resources and budgets • Advanced competency in using Microsoft Office, databases, website content management systems and social media platforms (Photoshop desirable) Knowledge: • Understanding of galleries, museum and/or heritage sectors • Professional knowledge of international cultural sector, ideally visual arts • Knowledge of new trends in digital marketing and communications • Knowledge of effective performance review and evaluation processes Additional: • Available and willing to work flexibly some evenings/ weekends • Regular travel to Leeds will be required

7 11. Basic Terms and Conditions . This is a full time permanent position of 35 hours/week, however a part time contract of not less than 28 hours/week worked over 4 or 5 days would be considered. . The selected candidate will be required to provide a passport and proof of address or other evidence to show that s/he is eligible to work in the UK. . The salary offered for this position will be on HMF Pay Grade G (£41,000 to £48,000) per annum. . The normal working week is 35 hours (or 28 hours – see above). . Out-of-hours attendance at events associated with the programme will frequently be required; time off in lieu may be requested for these hours. . 23 days paid leave per annum plus bank holidays in , plus three additional days at the discretion of management, usually offered between Christmas and New Year when the Foundation’s offices are closed. (Pro rata leave entitlement for a part time contract). The leave year runs from 1st January to 31st December. . New eligible employees will be auto-enrolled into the Foundation’s Group Personal Pension Scheme (currently with Scottish Widows) into which the Employee is required to contribute 5% and the Employer will contribute 12.5%. All employees are advised to make contributions into a pension scheme. You may opt out if you chose to do so. Further details will be given to appointed candidates. . Subject to acceptance by the insurers and compliance with the rules of the scheme, permanent employees are entitled to join the Employer’s group life insurance scheme and group income protection scheme. . Probationary period of 6 months. . Notice period of three calendar months or one week during the probationary period. . The place of work is Henry Moore Studios & Gardens, Perry Green, , Hertfordshire SG10 6EE. The post-holder will be required to visit the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds city centre at least two days every month. All travel expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with the Foundation’s Expenses Policy. . The selected candidate will be required to undertake a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check – formerly known as a CRB (Criminal Record Bureau) check - before employment will be confirmed; employment will not be unreasonably withheld, but if the DBS check discloses any findings that are relevant to the employment and which were not declared on the job application form or at the time of an offer of employment, then this may result in the withdrawal of an offer of employment. . A relocation package would be considered for the appointed candidate; this would be tax free subject to HMRC criteria.
