    Braking News The Official Newsletter of the Stratford Brakettes/Junior Brakettes/18U Select Brakettes Volumne 3,Issue 2 Editor: Bob Baird (203) 218-1066 December 2020 FAU SLUGGER ANSWERED THE ‘CALL’ FOR THE STRATFORD BRAKETTES Stephanie Call never got the opportunity to represent the United States on the softball diamond. She played her Brakettes career just three years into a 12-year hiatus from softball’s next scheduled appearance in the 2020 Olympics. Well, she finally got her chance to play for Team USA last summer as a member of the USA Softball Women’s Slow Pitch Futures team. It’s doubtful she would have received a look if there had been Olympic Games in 2012 or 2016 since the selection process is heavily slanted toward college standouts in the Power Five Conferences. It’s similar to the College Football Playoff where the SEC, Big Ten, and ACC are the chief powerbrokers. Nevertheless, Stephanie Call played on some of the finest teams in Brakettes softball history from 2011-2014. She played three years and eight games, a total of 202 games. During that time the Brakettes compiled a 200-8 overall record and posted two unbeaten seasons (2011 and 2013). Coming to Stratford from Florida Atlantic University, where she played for Hall of Famer Joan Joyce, the 6-foot-2 Call arrived highly touted and she didn’t disappoint. The Fort Lake, FL, native set the individual season home run record with 31 in her first year and followed with marks of 21 and 22. Coming back for a long weekend in 2014, Call played in eight wins and hit five solo homers in 16 at bats, finishing her career with 79 home runs, good for the No.

WABL softball plays in the YEAR WABL HAD IN Community Softball League (CSL) made up of teams from Copley, Highland, Revere IN THIS and Wadsworth. In 2017, the Junior League RubberDucks brought a runner-up trophy home to WABL! Way to go WABL softball! ISSUE WABL’s T-Ball Program was again a huge success, not only for WABL, but for the 2017 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS over 175 boys and girls who participated. This was our biggest year for T-Ball in 2018 REGISTRATION FORMS 2017! seven years! Thank you to T-Ball Commissioner Jeff Matthews, along with all of the 2018 CALENDAR OF EVENTS OUR 60TH YEAR coaches and parents who helped make T-Ball so successful. T-Ball fills up quickly, 2018 DRAFT DAY INFORMATION so make sure you sign up early. WABL hosted its “Night at the Races” fundraiser in May and it was a huge success, raising over $11,000 for field improvements and new equipment. The 2015-2016 Community Impact Committee has had the privilege of planning, researching and implementing projects that contribute to our three year partnership with The Martin Center. Active members and sustainers have continued to provide and serve meals twice a month to the youth at TMC. Our hope and vision is that with the development of a high capacity kitchen, JLSC will be able to provide TMC with the ability to prepare meals on site and sustain their meal service. Proposals are being submitted for grant funding to assist with the kitchen and programming such as “Kids in the Kitchen”. JLSC was able to purchase backpacks and thanks to great sustainer assistance, fill these backpacks and send them home with kids from TMC. The Community Impact Committee toured Andre’s House and met with Cliffie McDaniel -Thompson and immediately fell in love. Both with Cliffie and her mission. Andre’s House is an adult residential facility that provides non-medical care for persons aged Executive Board 18-59 who are unable to be cared for at home and have a physical, developmental or mental handicap. We had a fantastic DIAD on Saturday, January 23, 2016 planned Teresa Fout and organized by Sara Ehret. With over 25 volunteers, we painted the main living area President and changed the stark white walls to beautiful happy blue. The room was completed the following week with curtains, wall art, entertainment center and flat screen TV.
