Although this type of decision can be disappointing for athletes, there are a number of factors that will affect the standard of team that may be sent to particular events and all of these will be taken into account. These may include the age of an athlete, the wishes of race promoters, the demands of the event (distance, conditions and course profile) and funding. The selected teams for the events in the programme will be funded by scottishathletics Road Running and Cross Country budget. For this programme to be successful and to ensure progress towards our aim of fielding Scottish athletes in GB Teams, our top endurance athletes and their coaches are encouraged to participate in this programme and plan their season accordingly. Please keep Mark Pollard ([email protected]) and / or members of the selection committee fully informed of athletes’ racing programmes, results, training progress, injuries, illness and availability for selection for those races on the programme. -

Brendan went on to compete in three Olympic Games and became European and Commonwealth Champion at 5,000 and 10,000m plus a World Record Holder. During his time as an athlete competing at the top level of the sport he ran in the Round the Bays event in Auckland, New Zealand, and decided to bring the concept back to his native North East. The first Great North Run, the original Great Run, was staged in 1981. Since its first staging when 10,000 runners took part, it has grown into the world’s greatest half marathon and the UK’s biggest running event with 57,000 runners annually. In 2014 the Great North Run became the first event in the world to be officially recognised by the IAAF for achieving the milestone one millionth finisher. -

New-Look Great Birmingham Run Half Marathon to Set
NEW-LOOK GREAT BIRMINGHAM RUN HALF MARATHON TO SET OFF FROM NEW STREET ON SUNDAY New route returns to popular Cannon Hill Park and Bournville Thousands to run for charity or personal lifestyle goals Corporate teams battle for trophies in ENGIE Business Challenge Half marathon runners, are you ready? This year’s Simplyhealth Great Birmingham Run is just days away. The biggest 13.1-mile run in the Midlands takes place on Sunday, October 13, and will see thousands of participants set off from New Street in Birmingham city centre to raise funds for charity, beat a personal best time, or meet a healthy lifestyle goal. The Great Birmingham Run features a new and improved route for 2019, passing the famous Rotunda, Selfridges and St Martin’s Church before taking runners along Pershore Road and into south Birmingham. Following previous years’ half marathons, the Simplyhealth Great Birmingham Run will begin its return to the city centre when it reaches the 6-mile mark at the picture-postcard suburb of Bournville, a favourite spot for spectators to cheer on family and friends. The new route sees a return to some of the event’s most popular running locations of past years, including Cannon Hill Park at 9 miles; considered one of the most beautiful open spaces in Birmingham, and world-famous Edgbaston Stadium at the 10-mile mark; the scene for some of English cricket’s most memorable matches. The event features the ENGIE Business Challenge, which pits work teams against each other for fastest-time trophies and bragging rights in the corporate world.
