New Spring, New Wines

Happy Spring to our loyal wine club members. It has been an incredibly wet beginning to our year, but signs of bud break are abound in our vineyards. I’m very optimistic about this upcom- ing year, due to the amount of rainfall and the cooler temperatures that we’ve witnessed thus far.

A few weeks ago we bottled Armida’s first dry Rose of Grenache from 2018. We picked only 2 tons of premium Grenache grapes from the northern part of Dry Creek Valley. I stomped on the grapes when they got to our winery and let the juice be in contact with the grape skins for near- ly 3 hours before pressing. This resulted in a lightly colored juice that has all of the beautiful fruit characteristics synonymous with the Grenache grape. We fermented the juice as cold as possible and kept the wine in stainless steel to ensure that we encapsulated as much fruit into the wine as possible. There will be only 100 cases made (but if you like it we can make more next year).

This month, we will be bottling our first vintage of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the world- famous Chalone Vineyard. Chalone Vineyard became famous when their Chardonnay placed third in “The Judgement of Paris in 1976.” The Chalone Chardonnay beat out many famous Domaines of Burgundy to etch itself in wine history forever. In 2017, we were fortunate enough to secure 3 tons each of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, including Chardonnay grapes from the infamous “winning block.” For those who don’t know where Chalone is (I didn’t before), it’s located east of Soledad on the border of the Pinnacles National Park. It was nearly a 9 hour round-trip to go and sample the vineyard each time. The vineyard’s environment is arid, at about 1,000 feet elevation and with many unique soils due to the geological uniqueness of the OUR Pinnacles. These wines are extremely tasty and rare, but don’t taste like anything that I have WINES made from Sonoma County. Once again these wine’s demand will outpace our supply, so be ROCK! sure to grab some bottles when given the opportunity.

I wish you all the happiest and healthiest of Springs. I hope to see you at one of our many winery events coming up this season, but if not feel free to reach out to me any time to schedule a VIP tasting and tour.

Cheers, Brandon Lapides [email protected]
