It should be noted however, that the connection with the GRENVILLE family has at present only been suggested in terms of Nos. 1, 2 and 3 Bridge Street. I am indebted to Andy Powell for locating many of the reference sources referred to below, and in providing valuable historical assistance to progress this research to its conclusions. In the main Statement of Significance Report, the history of the buildings was researched as far as possible in an attempt to assess their Heritage Value, with a view to the owners making a decision on the future of these historic Bideford properties. I hope that this will be of assistance in this respect. PREFACE '•"^AN these bones live ? . and the breath came into them, and they ^-^ lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army.' The question, that was asked in Ezekiel's vision, seems to have been answered satisfactorily ; but it is no easy matter to breathe life into the dry bones of more than a thousand pedigrees : for not many of us are interested in the genealogies of others ; though indeed to those few such an interest is a living thing. Several of the following pedigrees are to be found among the most ancient of authenticated genealogical records : almost all of them have been derived from accepted and standard works ; and the most modern authorities have been consulted ; while many pedigrees, that seemed to be doubtful, have been omitted. Their special interest is to be found in the fact that (with the exception of some of those whose names are recorded in the Wallop pedigree, including Sir John Wallop, K.G., who ' walloped' the French in 1515) every person, whose lineage is shown, is a direct (not a collateral) ancestor of a family, whose continuous descent can be traced since the thirteenth century, and whose name is identical with that part of England in which its members have held land for more than seven hundred and fifty years.

  • By Mark Wareham, First Edition 15 December 2011
Our Family’s Rich Heritage By Mark Wareham, first edition 15th December 2011 Featuring Blachford family ancestors of the – Wareham family of Shaftesbury and Shroton (Iwerne Courtney) in Dorset and the Russell, Hurdle and Tapper families of Shroton and Dodington family ancestors of the – Wareham family of Shaftesbury, Stainer family of Donhead and Shaftesbury and the Love family of Motcombe in Dorset and Mere in Wiltshire 1 Introduction My father’s Wareham family is fortunate to be able to claim ancestral connections to two lines that were landed gentry - the Blachfords of Fordingbridge and the Dodingtons of Mere. The choice of the title of this work is appropriate because I am going to look into our ‘rich’ roots in terms of historical value as well as wealth and social status. As a result of our connection to these two families we have so called ‘gateway’ ancestors, Susannah Blachford of Fordingbridge and Martha Dodington of Mere and they help us trace a family lineage back to the medieval period and beyond. The Blachford family held Sandhill Manor (now called Sandleheath) near Fordingbridge in Hampshire and the Dodington family held Woodlands Manor in Mere in Wiltshire. Page four shows the lines from my two great grandparents, Sidney’s parents Walter George Wareham and Harriet Stainer, to Susannah and Martha. One of my grandfather Sidney Wareham’s (pictured right) great x 7 grandfathers was the gentleman and Lord of the Manor of Woodlands, William Dodington and another great x 5 grandfather was the gentleman, Mr Daniel Blachford who grandson of the Lord of the Manor of Sandhill.

  • Choral Evensong Attended by the High Sheriff of Devon and the High Sheriff in Nomination
Choral Evensong attended by the High Sheriff of Devon and the High Sheriff in Nomination Thursday 25 March 2021 5.30pm THE ANNUNCIATION OF OUR LORD TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY 1 Welcome to the Cathedral The Legal Service On behalf of the Cathedral Chapter, I offer you a warm welcome to Exeter Cathedral today for this online service attended by the outgoing and incoming High Sheriffs of Devon. Justice - the fair weight and measure, ensuring the poor are not exploited, the foreigner not oppressed and the right of the widow and orphan protected - is a profound part of biblical faith as witnessed to by the great Prophets of Israel and Jesus himself. And so it is a great privilege to host this service this evening in which we seek God’s blessing on those who administer the law in our community. In this service we celebrate our part in living out the wisdom and justice of God in our lives and our communities, and ask the guidance of God’s Holy Spirit on all those who administer justice in our land. The Very Revd Jonathan Greener Dean of Exeter The High Sheriff of Devon The Office of High Sheriff has existed for over 1,000 years. Prior to the Norman Conquest and after Magna Carta the Shire Reeve was responsible for collecting taxes and enforcing law and order in the County. They judged cases in monthly courts and acted as law enforcement officers. They could raise “hue and cry” after criminals and could summon and command the full military force of the County.

  • The History and Traditions of the Peek Family
A THE HISTORY AND TRADITIONS OF THE PEEK FAMILY Since the first half of the fourteenth century, when surnames started to come into use, the name Peek, with its variations Peeke, Peke, Pyke and Pike, has been borne by numerous families scattered throughout Devon and elsewhere in the West Country. This edition of "Peek of Hazelwood", like the first compiled in 1964, deals mainly with the families descended from John Peek of Hazelwood (Halsenwood) (1753-1847). The branch of the Peek family to which he belonged had, however, been established in one small area of Devon since earliest recorded times, and the connection remains to this day. The area in question comprises the district of South Hams and the hundreds and divisions of Coleridge, Stanborough and Ermington; from Blackawton and its neighbouring parishes of Halwell and Cornworthy during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries (and probably earlier), then to Modbury for the greater part of the eighteenth century and finally, in the 1770s, to Loddiswell and Kingsbridge. Members of the family have owned the Hazelwood estate at Loddiswell for over one hundred and fifty years. On 25 February 1833 a document was submitted to the College of Arms and attested before Lancaster Herald by John Peek of Halsenwood Villa, Loddiswell, co. Devon, gent, and his second son, Richard Peek, High Sheriff of London and Middlesex 1832-33, to support the grant of Arms to the former on 28 June 1832. The document gave details of all John Peek's children and grandchildren born up to 1832, as well as his father and grandfather.

  • THE CORNISHES of SOUTH DEVON by Duncan Reid
http://www.cornishsurname.matthewcornish.info/articles/131.htm X7357/1 THE CORNISHES OF SOUTH DEVON by Duncan Reid. Based on information gleaned from: "Notes to accompany a pedigree of the family of Cornyshe of Thurlestone, in the County of Devon" by James T Houssemayne Du Boulay in 1903. It is believed that the Cornish family established themselves at Thurlestone in Bigbury Bay, South Devon c.1500. The Cornishes of Thurlestone have a long, and rather complicated, history. As such it would be impractical to repeat many events surrounding and involving these families. Instead what I will try to do is to group them in their respective families. Here goes... 1. The Family of Robert Cornyshe Robert Cornyshe lived in Thurlestone from c.1536, holding the freehold estate of Whitley (or Whitleigh), at the northeast end of the town. In the parish church at Thurlestone there is a deed dated 1536, making over a plot of land as a site for a church house. Robert is named as one of four Feoffees along with members of the Stephens, Rogers, and Birdwood families. He died in 1562 on the 30th of December, leaving one - possibly two - sons. He was the predecessor of all the Cornishes in Thurlestone, South Milton, also of the adjoining parishes, and of James Cornish of Teignmouth, in the 18th Century from whom the families of Cornish, Cornish-Bowden, Kestell-Cornish, and Warre-Cornish are descended. William Cornish (d. 7 Feb. 1571) was son and heir to Robert. An entry appears to suggest another son, John, as living in 1591 but otherwise nothing is known about this particular son.
