A Call for the Revolutionary Regroupment of the Australian Left http://www.softdawn.net/Archive/MRM/thecall.html September 1975 Melbourne Revolutionary Marxists Introduction (2017) by Robert Dorning and Ken Mansell Momentous changes occurred in Western societies in the 1960s and 70s. A wave of youth radicalisation swept many Western countries. Australia was part of this widespread generational change. The issues were largely common, but varied in importance from country to country. In Australia, the Vietnam War and conscription were major issues. This radicalisation included the demand for major political change, and new political movements and far-left organisations came into being. A notable new development in Australia was the emergence of Trotskyist groupings. However, as the wider movement subsided with Australia's withdrawal from the Vietnam War, the Australian Left became fragmented and more divided than ever. It was in this environment that, in 1975, "A Call for the Revolutionary Regroupment of the Australian Left" was published by the "Melbourne Revolutionary Marxists" (MRM). "The Call" includes a description of the evolution of the new Left movements in Australia including the Trotskyist current to which MRM belonged. MRM was a break-away from the Communist League, an Australian revolutionary socialist organisation adhering to the majority section of the Fourth International. At the Easter 1975 National Conference, virtually the entire Melbourne branch of the CL resigned en masse from the national organisation. The issue was the refusal of the national organisation to accept the application by Robert Dorning (a leading Melbourne member) for full membership on the grounds he held a "bureaucratic collectivist" position on the social nature of the Soviet Union, rather than the orthodox Trotskyist position of "deformed workers' state". -

Individuals 329 IX INDIVIDUALS Discrimination - racial discrimination - International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination - Articles 4 and 14 - Australian implementation On 21 August 1990 the Attorney-General, Mr Duffy, provided the following written answer in part to a question on notice (HR Deb 1990, Vol 172, p 1214): The only State which to date has legislated against racial vilification is New South Wales, which did so in 1989. No. Australia has made a reservation to Article 4. It is still too early to assess the effectiveness of the NSW legislation, and the Government is also awaiting the report of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission's National Inquiry into Racist Violence. Article 14 of the Convention provides for States Parties to declare their recognition of the competence of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination to receive and consider communications from individuals and groups within that State Party who have exhausted all available domestic remedies. Australia has not to date made such a declaration, but the issue is one that is on the agenda of the Standing Committee of Attorney-General for consideration, together with the related issues of the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (the ICCPR) and the declaration that may be made under Article 41 of the ICCPR. On 21 December 1990 the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Senator Gareth Evans, provided the following written answer in part to a question on notice (HR Deb 1990, Vol174, pp 4999-5000): Since 1983, the Australian Government has undertaken extensive consultations with the State and Territory Governments in relation to accession to the First Optional Protocol, both individually and through the Standing Committee of Attorneys-General. -

To denote ethnicity, we use distinctively Anglo-Saxon, Indigenous, Italian, Chinese and Middle Eastern names. We compare multiple ethnic groups, rather than a single minority as in most other studies. In all cases we applied for entry-level jobs and submitted a CV indicating that the candidate attended high school in Australia. We find significant differences in callback rates: ethnic minority candidates would need to apply for more jobs in order to receive the same number of interviews. These differences vary systematically across ethnic groups. ‘After completing TAFE in 2005 I applied for many junior positions where no experience in sales was needed – even though I had worked for two years as a junior sales clerk.
