WNIJ – WNIU – NIRIS

From The Director & General Manager

Over the past year the stations made great strides in our pursuit to enrich, inspire, and inform the communities we serve. You will see many of those highlights recapped throughout the pages of this annual report. From adding new programs and specials to carrying robust election season coverage through a strong partnership with National Public Radio, this is all designed to keep our listeners’ curiosity satisfied.

In addition to providing essential news, intelligent talk, and endless hours of entertainment, we are also committed to being careful stewards of your financial investment in public radio. As a fiscally responsible organization, we take this annual opportunity to provide an overview of the stations’ finances.

While much continues to be made of federal funding for , local philanthropy tells a larger story. Listeners continue to generously support the services of WNIJ and WNIU. In fact, last year our Sustainer program reached an impressive benchmark. More than 1,500 listeners are fulfilling their membership via monthly contributions! These funds allow for broadcast service enhancements (check out our web pages!), shorter membership campaigns, and a reduction in administrative costs.

I hope you will also note the support given through the local business community. These partners range from southern Wisconsin and LaSalle County all the way to Dixon, Rockford, DeKalb and beyond. While the funding model for our stations is a complex structure, you will see that the largest source of revenue comes directly from the communities we reach… making WNIJ and WNIU truly listener-supported public radio.

Thanks so much for your continued listening and support as we move forward into another year of terrific radio.

In addition to our regularly-scheduled music, we were able to bring you the 90.5 / 105.7 MUSIC following special presentations: • Rockford Symphony Orchestra Concerts : WNIU is pleased to continue our association with the Rockford Symphony Orchestra, broadcasting the RSO’s six “Classics” concerts each season, usually on the Monday evening preceding the next live concert. Recorded at Rockford’s Coronado Theater, this season featured guest appearances by pianist Alon Goldstein and violinist Rachel Barton Pine.

• A new season of Metropolitan Opera broadcasts began in December. Live Met broadcasts are heard on Saturday afternoons, usually – but not always – starting at noon. Check the schedule at .org.

• Each weekday morning at 6, host John Zech offers historical musical insights on “Composer’s Datebook.”

• In August and September, our hosts played highlights from the Music@Menlo chamber music festival and the BBC Proms, the largest music festival in the world.

• Each December we bring you specials to brighten your holiday season, including programs celebrating Hanukkah, Advent, and Christmas. And we start each new year with our annual presentation of New Year’s Day from Vienna on January 1st.

Members of The Music Academy of Rockford - (Marti Frantz, Phil Blair, and Robin Kenney pictured here ) - shared stories of appreciation for Classical WNIU and answered pledge calls at our fall membership campaign. Members of the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra and DeKalb Festival Chorus participated similarly, to celebrate the benefits of an active arts community and the valuable role 90.5 WNIU plays within it. 6 Radio Information Service Northern Illinois Radio Information Service (NIRIS) -- a division of Northern Public Radio -- provides current print information to blind and print-impaired citizens of northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. NIRIS programming transmits on a sub-carrier (SCA) frequency to special receivers loaned free of charge to eligible listeners at home, hospitals, and nursing homes. Anyone unable to read, hold a book, or turn a page because of a vi - sual, physical, or learning disability may borrow a receiver.

Volunteers at NIRIS studios in Rockford and DeKalb read a sampling of newspapers, food and shopping ads, books, popular magazines, and special interest programs. Caroline Reed of rural Rockford (pictured) has volunteered in this capacity for nearly 20 years. Reed and a shift partner currently spend several hours on Monday mornings preparing and reading segments of the Register Star, from news and editorials to sports and obituaries.

Reed was initially drawn to NIRIS volunteerism because of her own love of reading. “It’s a pleasure to help the visually impaired join in those feelings” of staying informed. NIRIS provides opportunities to participate either in front of a microphone or behind the scenes. “If you haven’t the time or would rather not read on air, financial help is welcome,” Reed says. And as far as volunteering, “it’s the icing on life’s cake. It offers the chance to do things for others that aren’t done in our everyday lives. It makes life a more pleasant experience for both the donor and the recipient.” According to Reed, there are even physical benefits. “What a nice warm fuzzy feeling (you get) after a session of volunteering!” NIRIS invites your support, volunteering, and word-of-mouth networking. The service is funded almost entirely by contributions and grants. To volunteer, make a contribution, or inform us of someone who could use the NIRIS service, please call 815-972-2955 for more information.

Many NIRIS readers share an affinity for Classical WNIU and NPR News on WNIJ, as demonstrated last summer during some “Fan Gallery” photo-snapping at NIRIS’ Riverfront Museum offices in Rockford.

7 1. Unbeknownst at the time, Rockford hosts its Events final On The Waterfront festival in 2012, ending a longstanding Labor Day weekend tradition of bringing artists like Hamilton Loomis to the WNIJ-WNIU Left Bank Stage. 2. Election Night is a busy one for WNIJ contributor (and NIU Political Science Chair) Matt Streb, coverage host Dan Klefstad, and Program Director Bill Drake. 3. 4 8 Creating Community Each year, the stations of Northern Public Radio devote thousands of airtime minutes to promoting the efforts of other community non-profits. Through public service announcements (PSAs), online Events page listings, and station sponsorships, we aim to connect our educated, engaged listeners to events, activities, and causes they may find worthwhile.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS No-charge “PSAs” for non-profit endeavors are randomly rotated and read as time allows. Mail your information to 801 N. First Street, DeKalb, IL 60115, fax to 815-753-9938 or email [email protected] for consideration.

“SUBMIT EVENT” ONLINE You can share event details through our website: www.northernpublicradio.org under the Events tab, sidebar. A "Guidelines" link provides additional instruction.

STATION SPONSORSHIPS Sponsorships are a true collaboration between the station and partnering organization. WNIJ/WNIU may choose to sponsor a non-profit event believed to be compelling to our audience, connected to programming, and/or serving a significant community need. Because they involve a mutual exchange of promotion, sponsorship requests are encouraged well in advance of an event. Email [email protected] for more information or a copy of our Sponsorship Request Form.

Here are several ways to support your favorite Northern Public Radio programs and services:

Sustaining Membership Setting up ongoing monthly payments from your credit card, checking, or savings account fulfills your financial commitment to the station conveniently, affordably, and indefinitely - until you decide to stop or adjust the amount. "Sustainers" never need renewal reminders, sparing your mailbox from clutter while saving the station a little extra time and money, too.

"I start and end my day with WNIJ so there’s absolutely no question I would support it. I’m proud to be a Sustaining Member … I’ve just upped the ante a little bit!" - Casey Meyers, Woodstock -

Producers Club Members of our esteemed Producers Club generously support the station with annual gifts of $1,000 and more. As the Producers Club evolves, the station is able to better forecast for future programs and projects — all aimed to best serve our listeners and their communities.

If your company participates, re - quest and submit the proper form with your gift and we'll follow up. Some companies match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses as well.
