This project investigates the potential of self-directed, technologically mediated composition as a means of reconfiguring gender stereotypes within the operatic tradition. This practice confronts two primary stereotypes: the positioning of female performing bodies within narratives of violence and the absence of women from authorial roles that construct and regulate the operatic tradition. The Pomegranate Cycle redresses these stereotypes by presenting a new narrative trajectory of healing for its central character, and by placing the singer inside the role of composer and producer. During the twentieth and early twenty-first century, operatic and classical music institutions have resisted incorporating works of living composers into their repertory. -

MUSIC 262: Art/Prog Rock [Brian Ward demonstrates a tune on piano] [Brian Ward]: So around this time in rock and roll we really start to see a lot of fragmentation going on, and that’s reflected in this course. The way we have this designed is so that we can go in different directions with the music, and that’s what the music did all sort of at the same time. One of the directions is what we now call art rock and also progressive rock. Now art rock and progressive rock are terms that are used loosely. A good way to describe it is art rock is rock and roll that is influenced by classical music while progressive rock is more influenced by jazz, so- but you have different elements in varying degrees of influence and in different ways. A good illustration of that is one of the first bands that I want to talk about is The Who. Now The Who were definitely a straight down the line rock and roll band, and they started like a lot of these other British bands: imitating the blues and rhythm and blues music from the United States, but The Who were very unique. They had probably the most four individualized members of any band of all time. All four members of the band, Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon, were all very, very different people coming from different backgrounds, and that reflected in their music, and they used that to their advantage quite a bit. But with The Who I think rock star first becoming an art form in the sense that they had longer forms and they used many structures that eventually became mini-operas and they eventually made a rock opera called “Tommy.” Now when they started out they were more on the cutting edge of hard rock. -

Introduction to Special Issue: The Politics of Musical Knowledge in the Soviet Union and Beyond (1930s−1980s)1 OLGA PANTELEEVA AND DANIIL ZAVLUNOV In the conversation about how to best move on from the exclusionary musicological canon, Marina Frolova-Walker’s “An Inclusive History for a Divided World?” and Alejandro Madrid’s “Diversity, Tokenism, Non-Canonical Musics, and the Crisis of the Humanities in US Academia” fall on the opposite sides of the spectrum. We could label their approaches assimilationist and abolitionist, respectively. Whereas Frolova-Walker maintains that those repertories (Soviet music, in this case) that have been unfairly left out from the master narrative of Western European music should be included in textbooks and histories as a part of the same research frameworks that animate research on Western modernisms, Madrid argues that exclusion is the canon’s raison d’être and that including marginalized repertories (Ibero-American music, in this case) would go against its purpose. The solution, according to him, is to reduce the disciplinary space disproportionately occupied by the Anglo-American version of the classical canon, thus freeing up space to study the other 99% of music on its own terms.2 Our project resides in that 99%. Even though the music mentioned on the pages of this issue predominantly belongs to the same Western European repertory (this was, after all, the repertory that concerned Soviet music scholarship), our point is that the shape of that canon was different in the Soviet Union. As Pauline Fairclough and Marina Raku have shown, the Soviet version of the canon was constructed by musicologists during the 1930s in an effort to claim the Western European classics for domestic consumption—by inventing new revolutionary meanings to interpret the classics.3 Some works lent themselves to such appropriation more easily than others. -

Justin Frankeny: Genre and/as Distinction: The Mars Volta and the Symbolic Boundaries of Progressive Rock (Under the direction of Dr. Aaron Harcus) In the early 2000’s, The Mars Volta’s popularity among prog(ressive) rock fandom was, in many ways, a conundrum. Unlike 1970s prog rock that drew heavily on Western classical music, TMV members Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala routinely insisted on the integral importance of salsa music to their style and asserted an ambivalent relationship to classic prog rock. This thesis builds on existing scholarship on cultural omnivorousness to assert that an increase in omnivorous musical tastes since prog rock’s inception in the 1970s not only explains The Mars Volta’s affiliation with the genre in the early 2000s, but also explains their mixed reception within a divided prog rock fanbase. Contrary to existing scholarship that suggests that the omnivore had largely supplanted the highbrow snob, this study suggests that the snob persisted in the prog rock fanbase during progressive rock’s resurgence (ca. 1997-2012), as distinguished by their assertion of the superiority of prog rock through discourses of musical complexity adapted from classical music. -

The band comprised David Byrne (lead vocals, guitar), Chris Frantz (drums), Tina Weymouth (bass) and Jerry Harrison (keyboards, guitar). Other musicians also regularly made appearances in concert and on the group's albums. The new wave style of Talking Heads combined elements of punk, art rock, funk, avant-garde, dance, pop, and world music with the neurotic, whimsical stage persona of frontman and songwriter David Byrne. The band made use of various performance and multimedia projects throughout its career. Critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine described Talking Heads as being "one of the most critically acclaimed bands of the '80s, while managing to earn several pop hits." In 2002, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Four of the band's albums appeared on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and three of their songs ("Psycho Killer", "Life During Wartime", and "Once in a Lifetime") were included among The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. Talking Heads were also included at #64 on VH1's list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time", placed among Rolling Stone 's similar list as well.
