since his trusty E-PL5 had unfortunately suffered a fatal accident. We caught up with Peter to find out how he’s been getting on and after just over a year of owning the camera he’s more than impressed with its performance. “I try to get out snapping at least twice a month, and usually go to coastal locations, with two or three camera PEN PALS club companions,” Peter says. One day while out on a walk with my camera I noticed a training day taking place at a local high- class barbershop. I decided to pop in and asked if they would mind me taking some photographs. Though they had an official photographer at the time, Mark Shirley, after a quick chat and a promise of sending them some of the shots, I was given the OK to shoot. Later in the day I did some research and found out about this whole Barber scene. The Great British Barber Bash is a series of events that run throughout the UK to promote and showcase the best talent in the barbering community, at some very cool venues. I noticed there was an upcoming event at the Camp and Furnace located in Liverpool’s Baltic area, so got in touch to see if I could go along and shoot the event. I ended up becoming the official photographer for the event while their regular photographer shot video. The venue was an old warehouse that had been converted into a bar and restaurant with a large event space. Although I had both my E-M10 and Pentax K-5 I actually only ended up shooting with the Olympus. I started the day by photographing the event sponsors, portraits and exhibitors and required for my brief. With my recently purchased E-M10 I used a borrowed Panasonic 45-150mm HD lens and set Aperture Priority mode, locking in an ISO of 800 to start with. For me, the advantages of the Olympus were the Electronic Viewfinder and the ease of handling. Setting the front dial to aperture, the rear dial to compensation, FN2 set to bring up ISO on the front dial and white-balance on the rear, meant I didn’t have to take the camera away from my eye. Seeing in real time what I would be achieving in shot meant no chimping (checking the image on the LCD after taking each shot). As the day progressed the ambient lighting got darker, with the stage lighting coming into prominence. I pushed the ISO higher to compensate and was beginning to think I would be left with high noise and messy images – I Click through couldn’t have been more wrong. Shooting at a to see more max of ISO 3200 and sometimes at speeds as A CUT ABOVE THE REST, WITH THE OM-D E-M10 low as 1/13 sec the built-in image stabilisation left me stunned. Another of the advantages that I hadn’t foreseen was how unthreatening the camera was to the people I was photographing, enabling me to get some great candid shots. The camera also attracted some attention from other photographers who wanted to know, as photographers do, how it was performing. Swiping through the images on the rear screen seemed to answer most of their questions. Reviewing them on my computer when I got home the experience just got better, shots taken at 1/50 sec at f/5.6, ISO 3200 looked great – fantastic testimony to the low-light capability and in-body stabilisation. When the images went live and were distributed to the competitors and demonstrators the positive feedback was phenomenal. So much so that I have been asked to help capture the Barber Bash’s events this year too, around the UK. In terms of shooting with the E-M10 focusing was fast and precise even in low-light conditions. It feels solid and sure, giving you the confidence to throw it about, yet without the weight penalty of a DSLR. The images are brilliant and ultimately that’s what it’s all about. Would I go completely mirrorless? Certainly. If this is what an E-M10 is capable of it bodes very well for cameras further up the range. davebphotography.co.uk
