Londonassemblyelections, May2020 London Assembly elections, May 2020 All you need to know. by Gareth Bacon AM Once the process for selecting our Mayoral candidate has been completed, the party will be selecting candidates to contest the London Assembly elections which are held on the same day as the Mayoral election. What is the GLA and the London Assembly? The Greater London Authority (GLA) consists of the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. The Assembly is an elected body, which holds the Mayor and Mayoral advisers to account for their policies and programmes. The Assembly consists of 25 London Assembly Members, elected at the same time as the Mayor – 14 represent constituencies and 11 represent the whole city (London-wide). As a London Assembly Member, you’ll have specific duties and responsibilities: • Membership of cross-party Committees to scrutinise the Mayor’s policies and programmes and lead investigations into issues affecting Londoners; • Scrutinising the Mayor directly at Mayor’s Question Time; • Analysing and voting on the Mayor’s statutory strategies and multi-billion pound budget; • Submission of motions and petitions on matters affecting Londoners. Who are the GLA Conservatives? The GLA Conservative Group currently consists of 8 London Assembly Members. There are five constituency members: Tony Devenish AM, West Central (Covering the boroughs of Hammersmith and Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea and City of Westminster) Gareth Bacon AM, Bexley and Bromley Tony Arbour AM, South West (Covering the boroughs of Hounslow, Kingston-upon-Thames and Richmond-upon-Thames) Keith Prince AM, Havering and Redbridge Steve O’Connell, AM Croydon and Sutton There are three London-wide members – Andrew Boff AM, Shaun Bailey AM and Susan Hall AM. London Assembly elections, May 2020 All you need to know. What do the GLA Conservatives do? Since May 2016, the Conservative Group has been working to hold Sadiq Khan to account, to ensure his policies are working for Londoners and that he is delivering value for money. The Group does this via questions to the Mayor and Committees, but also produces policy papers each month on subjects affecting London and issues several press releases per week to both local and national news. Recent work of the Group includes: • Publishing a series of policy reports in 2018, including on the ‘Cost of Khan’ and the Mayor’s broken promises, the use of artificial intelligence in the Metropolitan police, reversing the rise in knife crime, and improving London’s air quality. • Highlighting the Mayor’s failing policies in Mayor’s Question Time, including ‘cooking the books’ over his housing figures, his ill-considered Ultra Low Emission Zone policy, and removing the exemption of the Congestion Charge for private hire vehicles. • Exposing the Mayor’s lack of commitment to his Night Time Commission, including that he has only met its Head once for a photo-shoot. • National press and broadcast media coverage on the Mayor’s poor record on solving violent crime and London’s crime epidemic, housing failures, the state of Transport for London finances, and extra taxes for working people and small businesses. What we are seeking in a candidate We need candidates with strong leadership and communication skills, a passion for London, and a desire to make a difference. Our Assembly Members come from all walks of life, with different backgrounds and experiences. If you are interested in applying but would appreciate a confidential discussion on life at City Hall or the challenges of being a GLA candidate, then please contact me at [email protected] Gareth Bacon AM Leader, GLA Conservatives .

  • Proposed Cycling and Pedestrian Improvements on A21 Farnborough Way at Green Street Green
Proposed cycling and pedestrian improvements on A21 Farnborough Way at Green Street Green Consultation Report October 2013 1 Contents 1. Introduction……………………………………………….….……………………..2 2. The Consultation.................………………………………………………………4 3. Results of the consultation…......………………………………………….......... 4 4. Conclusion………………………………………………………………………….10 Appendix A – copy of consultation letter…………………………..……...….…11 Appendix B – list of stakeholders consulted.……………………………..…….13 2 1 Introduction Background In 2005 a petition with 100 signatures was received by Transport for London (TfL) from Bob Neill (London Assembly Member), asking us to provide a signal controlled crossing on the A21 near the junction with Cudham Lane North. An investigation into providing improved crossing facilities was initiated the same year resulting in a design consisting of a staggered signal controlled crossing which was consulted on in January 2010. Subsequently it was decided that the scheme was not deliverable as collision data for the road was not sufficient to justify the cost of the scheme or impact on general traffic movements. An alternative scheme for addressing pedestrian improvements was subsequently designed (as detailed below). Objectives The proposals are designed to improve pedestrian and cycling accessibility and connectivity around the A21 Green Street Green roundabout and in particular to provide improved pedestrian and cycle links between A21 Farnborough Way and A21 Sevenoaks Way as well as the residential developments in Cudham Lane North and the centre of Green Street Green, without significant impact on general traffic movements. General Scope of proposals The proposals would see the introduction of a new wide uncontrolled pedestrian and cycle crossing facility across A21 Farnborough Way, improvements to the existing crossing facility across Cudham Lane North, and improved shared pedestrian and cycle routes.

However, occasionally, committees may have to consider some business in private. This page is intentionally left blank Agenda Item 4 Councillors Morrison and Anwar along with the Scrutiny Manager attended the Lewisham Youth Independent Advisory Group at Lewisham Police Station on Thursday 24th January 2019. The group started a year ago and was designed to be a safe space for young people and a chance to chat to local Police and share concerns and ideas. The Police were working with schools. This was happening more now compared to the past but there was always room for improvement. There were 11 young women at the meeting and all felt that they didn’t mind the idea of stop and search and it could make people feel safer but it was important it was done “fairly and politely”. The young people reported that it could be a humiliating interaction and there should be more emphasis on respect and politeness.

  • London Assembly
Appendix 2 Transport Committee – Wednesday, 6 December 2017 Transcript of Agenda Item 8 – Cycling Infrastructure Keith Prince AM (Chairman): It now gives me great pleasure to welcome Andrew [Gilligan], a man I worked with a few years ago when he was the Cycling Czar. He is not any more. His title is ‘Cycling Czar emeritus’ or something, in the Latin. We are now going to do a section on all sorts of things to do with cycling. Thank you very much for coming along. I am going to kick off with the first question and it goes like this. You have been critical of recent delays in getting cycling infrastructure built. What do you think has gone wrong? Andrew Gilligan (Former Cycling Commissioner): It is weak political leadership. The key condition for cycling improvements to happen is strong political leadership. We have seen that in the Mini-Hollands in Waltham Forest and in Enfield, which are the only schemes to have seen anything really happening on the ground in the last 19 months. We have not seen that from City Hall. There does not seem to be any real willingness to make decisions that significantly alter the status quo on the roads. Keith Prince AM (Chairman): Secondly, is borough capacity still a problem for delivering schemes and what are your views on plans for Cycle Superhighway (CS) 4 and CS9? Andrew Gilligan (Former Cycling Commissioner): Broadly, borough capacity was always the most serious problem we faced. Not very many boroughs are both willing and capable. Some boroughs were willing but not capable.
