  • 2 Race, Class, and Residence in the Chicago Ummah
2 Race, Class, and Residence in the Chicago Ummah Ethnic Muslim Spaces and American Muslim Discourses The racial landscape of a city influences how close American Muslims have come to fulfilling the ummah ideals there. When I arrived in Chicago in the spring of 2002 to research Muslims in the city, two things stood out. One was the city’s diversity. Chicago was a nexus of global flows. Filled with people from all over the world—Bosnians, Mexicans, Nigerians, and Vietnamese—Chicago fit my idea of a global village. But alongside these global flows were major inequalities, particularly in the racially segregated housing, the second thing that stood out. Indeed, Chicago has always been known for its racist residential patterns and ethnic neighborhoods. “Germans settled on the North Side, Irish on the South Side, Jews on the West Side, Bohemians and Poles on the Near Southwest Side.”1 In the nineteenth century, European immigrants carved out ethnic lines across the city which, with the rise of black migration to Chicago in the 1920s, soon had viciously racist and economically devastating consequences. Fear and widespread propaganda created large-scale white resistance to African Americans. As whites maneuvered to keep blacks out of their neighborhoods and fled from the ones where blacks did settle, African Americans were confined to and concentrated in the South Side’s Black Belt. Business owners then moved from this expanding black area and invested their resources and profits elsewhere. As the community’s resources declined and the population grew, neighborhoods in the Black Belt steadily turned into overcrowded slums.2 Outside the South Side’s Black Belt, a flourishing metropolis took form, setting the stage for Chicago to become a major international city.

  • Batman Miniature Game Teams
TEAMS IN Gotham MAY 2020 v1.2 Teams represent an exciting new addition to the Batman Miniature Game, and are a way of creating themed crews that represent the more famous (and infamous) groups of heroes and villains in the DC universe. Teams are custom crews that are created using their own rules instead of those found in the Configuring Your Crew section of the Batman Miniature Game rulebook. In addition, Teams have some unique special rules, like exclusive Strategies, Equipment or characters to hire. CONFIGURING A TEAM First, you must choose which team you wish to create. On the following pages, you will find rules for several new teams: the Suicide Squad, Bat-Family, The Society, and Team Arrow. Models from a team often don’t have a particular affiliation, or don’t seem to have affiliations that work with other members, but don’t worry! The following guidelines, combined with the list of playable characters in appropriate Recruitment Tables, will make it clear which models you may include in your custom crew. Once you have chosen your team, use the following rules to configure it: • You must select a model to be the Team’s Boss. This model doesn’t need to have the Leader or Sidekick Rank – s/he can also be a Free Agent. See your team’s Recruitment Table for the full list of characters who can be recruited as your team’s Boss. • Who is the Boss in a Team? 1. If there is a model with Boss? Always present, they MUST be the Boss, regardless of a rank.

  • Stockholm's Archipelago and Strindberg's
Scandinavica Vol 52 No 2 2013 Stockholm’s Archipelago and Strindberg’s: Historical Reality and Modern Myth-Making Massimo Ciaravolo University of Florence Abstract The Stockholm Archipelago is ubiquitous in the prose, poetry, drama and non-fiction of August Strindberg. This article examines the interaction in Strindberg’s oeuvre between the city of Stockholm as civilized space and the wild space surrounding it, tracing the development of a literary myth of Eden in his work. Strindberg’s representations of the shifting relations between city and nature, it is argued, played (and still play) an important role in the cultural construction of mythologies of the loss of the wild space. The environments described in Strindberg’s texts are subject to changes, shifts and repetitions with variations, such that the archipelago in itself can be read as a mirror of the polyphony of points of view, the variability and the ambiguities we find in his oeuvre at large. Keywords August Strindberg, Stockholm Archipelago, city in literature, nature in literature, mythologies 52 Scandinavica Vol 52 No 2 2013 August Strindberg’s home town of Stockholm, together with its wilder counterpart, the archipelago or skärgård (literally meaning group, or circle, of islands and skerries), plays a large part in Strindberg’s literary universe as well as in his life. The archipelago is ubiquitous in his oeuvre; it occurs in prose as well as in poetry and in drama, and it characterizes both fiction, autobiography and non-fiction (essays, letters and diaries). It can sometimes provide the setting to whole works, but in a series of other works it can be included as one of the settings, or even be mentioned peripherally.
