Atlanta, Georgia 30317 (404) 371-0749 www.saintphilip.org 2019 DANIEL FAST INTRODUCTION Self Reflection “ What do these stones mean?” Joshua 4:21b (NIV) Last year in 2018, the vision for the church as well as our own individual lives was Destroying Every Stronghold and Demolishing Every __________________________________________________________________ Yoke. The scriptural foundation for this was John 8:36, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” The messages addressed the existential __________________________________________________________________ reality that generational strongholds and yokes, as well as “weights and __________________________________________________________________ sins” we have acquired through our own human frailties have been major impediments that have delayed and obstructed us from walking in the __________________________________________________________________ vision God has for our lives that is greater than any vision we can have for ourselves or others could have for us. Even though we may not be 100% __________________________________________________________________ stronghold and yoke free, and that recovery from some “thorns” in our flesh and in our faith may be lifelong and lifetime struggles, we also __________________________________________________________________ recognize that a quality Christian life must consist of lord than becoming free from things and some people. We are freed for a purpose. We are freed __________________________________________________________________ from slavery so that we can pursue God’s will and destiny. __________________________________________________________________ However, to accomplish all God in Christ through the gifting of the __________________________________________________________________ Holy Spirit desires to do for the expansion, and realization of God’s kingdom on earth, as well as our greatest, best and highest fulfillment as __________________________________________________________________ individuals, we must move. Therefore, our 2019 theme is “It’s Crossover Time!” Our scriptural passage can be found in the third and fourth chapters __________________________________________________________________ of the book of Joshua, particularly Joshua 4:21b where the question is asked, “What do these stones mean?” __________________________________________________________________ This year, we, as a body of Christ, will be focusing on six __________________________________________________________________ foundational stones: 1. Faith __________________________________________________________________ 2. Favor __________________________________________________________________ 3. Future 4. Finance __________________________________________________________________ 5. Fitness 6. Farming __________________________________________________________________ The 21 Day Daniel Fast, at the beginning of the calendar year __________________________________________________________________ serves as our period of consecration and preparation for the challenges and the conquests of the coming year. Our Daniel Fast helps us to focus first on __________________________________________________________________ our Lord Jesus Christ who is the very foundation of the church. __________________________________________________________________ Self Reflection Our 21 Day Daniel Fast also reminds us of the discipline and commitment that will be necessary to fortify our faith, favor, future, finance, fitness, and farming. __________________________________________________________________ There is an old saying, “If you always do what you’ve always done, __________________________________________________________________ you’ll always get what you’ve always got.” To maintain our six foundational stones, we will have to do some different things, have some __________________________________________________________________ different visions, try some different approaches, think some different __________________________________________________________________ thoughts, and adopt some different priorities. We don’t know all of the different things we must do; however, we know the Lord Jesus Christ will __________________________________________________________________ give us victory in his name and to his glory and honor - nothing more, nothing less and nothing else. __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ William D. Watley Under Shepherd __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ 3 __________________________________________________________________ What is Fasting? Self Reflection In the Old Testament, the word “fast” is derived from the Hebrew term tsom, which refers to the practice of self-denial. It was Hannah, who later became the mother of Samuel, who was so troubled about her inability to have children “she wept and did not eat.” (I Samuel 1:7) In the New Testament, the word “fast” is __________________________________________________________________ derived from the Greek word nesteia, which also refers to self-denial. When Jesus began his public ministry, Jesus did so with an extended fast of 40 days. __________________________________________________________________ (Matthew 4:1,2) __________________________________________________________________ Fasting is abstaining from food for a spiritual purpose. Fasting is not a tool to twist the arm of God so that He will give you exactly what you want. Fasting __________________________________________________________________ has a spiritual purpose and that purpose is to get your flesh out of the way, so the Spirit of God can move in your life. Fasting removes barriers to __________________________________________________________________ communication with God and allows your spiritual nature to commune directly with the heavenly Father - without disturbance. When a person makes a __________________________________________________________________ determination to fast, they are making a determination to remove the obstacles in their life and submit to the will of God. __________________________________________________________________ Four Types of Fasts __________________________________________________________________ Full Fast __________________________________________________________________ Drink only liquids (you establish the number of days). __________________________________________________________________ The Daniel Fast Eat no meat, no sweets and no bread. Drink water and juice. Eat fruits and __________________________________________________________________ vegetables. __________________________________________________________________ 3-Day Fast This fast can be a Full Fast, Daniel Fast or give up at least one item of food. __________________________________________________________________ Partial Fast __________________________________________________________________ A Partial fast is from 6:00 am to 3:00 pm or from sun up to sundown. You can select from three types of fasting—a Full Fast, Daniel Fast or give up at least one __________________________________________________________________ item of food. __________________________________________________________________ Fasting and Your Health - We recommend you always consult your physician prior to beginning any type of fast. If you are in poor health or have __________________________________________________________________ concerns about your physical ability to fast, we especially urge you to consult a physician before beginning your fast. Your doctor can provide advice on how __________________________________________________________________ you can participate in this Daniel Fast, in a way that is healthy for you. __________________________________________________________________ 4 __________________________________________________________________ Self Reflection The Daniel Fast As we prepare for the beginning of the year’s Daniel Fast, our church is being called to a special season of fasting and praying from January 2-22, 2019 Since ancient times, fasting (abstaining from all foods, certain kinds of food, and __________________________________________________________________ various liquids) has been a spiritual discipline believers have practiced for strengthening their relationship with God; direction in decision making, power to __________________________________________________________________ break certain habits or to resist the attack of the enemy; healing for the body and mind; adoption of healthier lifestyles; and, as a support and aid in prayer when __________________________________________________________________ certain request are being

Abundant Life Church Consecration 2021 Prayer and Fasting Guide Bishop Lawrence Ward Abundant Life Church Consecration 2021 Abundant Life Church Consecration 2021 Fast Begins Sunday, January 10, 2021 at 8:00pm Fast Ends Sunday, January 31, 2021 at 8:00pm I - A Call to Fasting: Every January Abundant life begins the year with a 21-day consecration. Due to Covid -19 we have been away from our Sunday morning worship gatherings for 11 months. However, we still have a desire to seek God and pursue his purpose in our lives. The building may have been closed but the church is very much alive and active. Our theme for this year is “Kingdom Living.” Our goal is to prioritize and live out God’s plan in every area of our lives. As we submit to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit we can expect life transformation from inside and out. II - Why does Abundant Life fast as a church? Fasting will bring us into a deeper, more intimate, and more powerful relationship with the Lord by helping us to develop discipline and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. By removing foods from our diet, it trains us to exert self-control over our physical selves so we can cultivate the discipline necessary for spiritual growth. Furthermore, as we cut out distractions and depend on God, our spirit becomes uncluttered by the things of this world and more sensitive to the Lord. Through fasting, we put ourselves in a position where we can gain a greater sense of purpose and focus individually and collectively.

  • The Daniel Fast
The Daniel Fast Daniel 10: 2-3 2 In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks. 3 I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled. Preparing for the Daniel Fast In addition to spending time in prayer to decide on the focus of your fast you should take the time to prepare your body as well. Start easing off things that you feel you cannot live without: ease off caffeine, sugar, animal (if you eat an omnivorous diet) and processed foods. Try to do it before the first day of the fast, otherwise you might experience mild-to-strong detox symptoms: headaches, cramping, nausea, etc. It is strongly discouraged for you to go on an eating binge of all your favorite food the night before your fast begins! It will be harder for you to start the fast because processed, animal and fatty foods will create a craving that will be hard to deal with for days to come. To prepare for the fast, start drinking more water to flush out toxins faster and make the transition easier. Foods to include in your diet during the Daniel Fast… All fruits These can be fresh, frozen, dried, juiced or canned (watch for added sugar). Apples Blueberries Oranges Grenadine Guava Melons Cranberries Prunes Apricots Boysenberries Papayas Raspberries Honeydew melons Mulberry Dates Raisins Avocados Breadfruit Peaches Strawberries Kiwi Nectarines Figs Tangelos Bananas Cantaloupe Pears Tangerines Lemons Oats Grapefruit Watermelon Berries Limes Cherries Pineapples Blackberries Olives Grapes Mangoes Coconuts Plums Vegetables These can be fresh, frozen, dried, juiced or canned (watch salt content).

  • 21 DAYS of PRAYER and FASTING Introduction We Have Done the Daniel Fast As a Church Family for Several Years to Start the New Year
COOKBOOK Daniel Fast 21 DAYS OF PRAYER AND FASTING Introduction We have done the Daniel Fast as a Church family for several years to start the New Year. In the past we have done a one day total fast and a three day fast drinking only liquids. We even tried a seven day, liquids only fast! The Daniel Fast was appealing because almost everyone can participate. Although fasting is an important spiritual discipline, few Christians practice it. Why? Because we get weak, cranky, impatient, short with others and well, hungry! Fasting doesn’t suit the American Christian lifestyle. Even the word itself conjures up negative Fasting was a way of life for all the men and emotions. When I suggest it, I can see people’s women of faith in the Bible. Anna, a widow, eyes glaze over and even though I can’t read served God with ‘fastings and prayers day and their thoughts, they are deciding right then not night’ (Luke 2:36-38). Daniel, from whom we to participate. Please don’t let that be you. In- get the name of the fast, fasted for twenty-one stead, ask God to help you participate at some days as recorded in Chapter 10. That’s where level. we get the length of the fast. In Chapter one, Daniel ate only vegetables and things that With the Daniel Fast we can modify our eating grow naturally like beans, nuts, fruit, etc. We habits in order to focus on spiritual disciplines would say, “no processed food”. That is where like Scripture reading and meditation, prayer, we get the diet.

  • Fasting Types of Fasts How to Begin Your Fast
FASTING The goal of fasting is to draw nearer to God. Biblical fasting always has to do with eliminating distractions for a spiritual purpose; it hits the reset button of our soul and renews us from the inside out. It also enables us to celebrate the goodness and mercy of God and prepares our hearts for all the good things God desires to bring into our lives. Remember, your personal fast should present a level of challenge, but it is very important to know your body, your options, and, most importantly, to seek God in prayer and follow what the Holy Spirit leads you to do. TYPES OF FASTS COMPLETE FAST This fast calls for drinking only liquids, typically water with light juices as an option. SELECTIVE FAST This type of fast involves removing certain elements from your diet. One example of a selective fast is the Daniel Fast, during which you remove meat, sweets, and bread from your diet and consume water and juice for fluids and fruits and vegetables for food. PARTIAL FAST This fast is sometimes called the Jewish Fast and involves abstaining from eating any type of food in the morning and afternoon. This can either correlate to specific times of the day, such as 6:00 am to 3:00 pm, or from sunup to sundown. SOUL FAST This fast is common for those who do not have much experience fasting food, who have health issues that prevent them from fasting food, or who wish to refocus certain areas of their life that are out of balance.

It is a biblically-based partial fast centered on the Old Testament account of dietary practices in the Book of Daniel. This practice recommends the intake of certain foods and the elimination of others from one’s diet. The intention of the Daniel Fast is not just to duplicate what Daniel ate, but to replicate the spirit in which he did it. If the focus of the fast is solely on food, we miss the blessing of the experience.
