LONDON BOROUGH OF HARINGEY STATUTORY LISTED BUILDINGS Last Amendment: 20/09/2011 The List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest is a Register compiled by English Heritage for approval by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, recording the best of British Buildings. It comprises a wide variety of structures, not all of which are buildings as such. Under Section 1 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 (as amended), English Heritage is required to compile and amend lists of such buildings. The most recent comprehensive survey of buildings within the London Borough of Haringey (LBH) resulted in the 12th List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest, which came into effect on 10 May 1974. Since then 67 Amendments have been issued, the most recent on 26th May 2010. The buildings are classified in grades to show their relative national importance as follows:- Grade I These are buildings of exceptional interest (only about 2% of listed buildings). Grade II* These are particularly important buildings of more than special interest (some 4%). Grade II These are buildings of special interest, which warrant every effort being made to preserve them (94% of all listed buildings). Buildings are listed in their entirety including the exterior and interior: there is no such thing as just a listed façade. It is important to note that a listed building includes 'any object or structure fixed to the building' and 'any object or structure within the curtilage of the building which, although not fixed to the building, forms part of the land and has done so since before 1 July 1948'. Therefore a wall attached to a listed building or a building built prior to July 1948 within the curtilage of a listed building will also be listed. It is a criminal offence to extend, demolish or carry out internal or external alterations to a listed building without having first obtained Listed Building Consent from the Council, even if you did not know that the building was listed. The complete List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest for LBH is reproduced below, ranked by Grade and subdivided by existing use. It is important therefore, that when searching for a building, each grade and use is checked, particularly where the existing use differs from the original. There may be more than one entry on the List for each property, particularly in relation to artefacts. There are currently 471 listed buildings within the Borough. Whilst the List is believed to be correct at the time of publication, no responsibility can be accepted for omissions or errors. Furthermore additions and amendments to the List may be compiled at any time by English Heritage and approved by the Secretary of State, in which case the Council will endeavour to notify the relevant owners and occupiers of the listed building concerned. If you require further information about a listed building or need advice about obtaining Listed Building Consent please contact the Council’s Design and Conservation Team on 020 8489 1479. BAR: refers to inclusion within the English Heritage Register of Buildings at Risk. 1 ADDRESS Date First Listed & Subsequent Amendments GRADE I (6 buildings) RESIDENTIAL (2 buildings) North Hill, Highgate (west side) Highpoint I (G, H, I, K, A to D, Nos. 1 to 12, 12A & 14 to 48 consec.) 10.5.74 Upgraded by 28th Amendment 3.11.95 Upgraded by 38th Amendment 6.4.99 Highpoint II (Nos. 51 to 62 consec.) 10.5.74 Altered by 2nd Amendment 19.11.75 Upgraded by 28th Amendment 3.11.95 Upgraded by 38th Amendment 6.4.99 PUBLIC BUILDINGS (1 building) Lordship Lane, Tottenham (north side) Bruce Castle 22.7.49 OTHERS (3 buildings) Highgate Hill (north side) No. 104 (Cromwell House) 19.3.51 Forecourt walls to Cromwell House 10.5.74 Lordship Lane, Tottenham (north side) Tower to south west of Bruce Castle 22.7.49 GRADE II* (28 buildings -
