JIM MULVIHILL: We heard a little bit from Johnny [Velazquez] about his trip. Bob, if you would, just take us through the race. BOB BAFFERT: Well, I mean, I had so many emotions running through my mind, with Jimmy [Barnes] not being able to get the saddle on the horse. The horse got angry. We knew he could be a problem. We were trying to saddle him on the walk. And then when he -- he got mad, he went up, and Jimmy lost and landed on his arm and he had a broken arm. Had to scratch the horse because he fell on his side. The horse is okay. Didn't have any scratches. Once they do that, it's an automatic scratch.

1/ST BET // WAGER GUIDE KENTUCKY DERBY MAY01/2021 CHURCHILL DOWNS MEET THE 2021 DERBY CONTENDERS By Johnny D., @XBJohnnyD ESSENTIAL QUALITY: Unbeaten in five career starts, this son of Tapit is the defending Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner and reigning 2-year-old champ. He’s also the current consensus pick as top 3-year-old. This Brad Cox-trained colt has done everything right in two 2021 starts. He romped home in the Grade 3 Southwest at Oaklawn Park and then out-fought a game, pace scenario- aided Highly Motivated at Keeneland to win the Grade 2 Blue Grass by a neck. He races a bit off the pace early, but can quickly reach contention when prompted. He has won by as much as four and one-quarter lengths and by as little as a neck. Last September, he broke his maiden first time out going six furlongs at Churchill Downs, so you know he likes the track. Jockey Luis Saez seeks redemption aboard this colt for the disappointment and criticism the rider endured following the disqualification of his mount Maximum Security from first to 17th in the 2019 Kentucky Derby. Trainer Brad Cox won last season’s Eclipse Award as the nation’s top trainer. HOT ROD CHARLIE: Ever since stretching out to two turns on the main track and adding blinkers, this son of Preakness winner Oxbow has been a tiger. His first race under those particular circumstances came in the fourth start of his career and resulted in a one-mile maiden score at Santa Anita in October.

Thank you to the men and women of the New York Thoroughbred industry, who have pulled together to help our horses, our backstretch community and each other in trying times. We are proud to represent you. Together, we will weather the storm. 2 A HEARTFELT THANK YOU TO OUR PARTNERS Awards Dinner Sponsored By Platinum Partners Gold Partners Chester & Mary Broman Silver Partners Bronze Partner Greenberg Traurig, LLP Industry Partners Adirondack Trust Company • Capital OTB 3 A MESSAGE FROM THE NYTB EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Historically, the New York breeding and racing communities gather every April for NYTB’s New York-Bred Divisional Champions Awards Banquet to celebrate the previous year’s racetrack achievements of the New York Thoroughbred Breeding and Racing Program. We present a video program showcasing all the equine nominees, and crown the New York-bred divisional champions one-by-one before announcing the New York-bred Horse of the Year and Broodmare of the Year. We also honor the most successful human program participants of the year. It is always a wonderful celebration. In April 2020, we are all navigating the uncharted waters of the COVID-19 pan- demic. In a situation unlike any other in our collective experience, individuals, busi- nesses, organizations and institutions are striving to keep our horses, employees, families and selves safe and well. Accordingly, in March we decided to cancel our Awards Banquet. We realized this would be a disappointment for the connections of our divisional championship nominees, but it was the right choice. Then, we forged ahead to try to make the best of a difficult situation.
