This area of the chart describes the way a person conceives of themself, and can also be understood as how someone looks, or the ways they present themselves to the world. I think of the 1 first house as akin to a pair of tinted glasses. The quality of the ascendant and first house determine the ways an individual will view themself, and will also be a significant factor in what others see or perceive in them upon first impression. SECOND HOUSE (associated with Taurus, opposes the 8th house) The second house is “the house of values.” This area of the chart rules an individual’s sense of personal value, what they value in life, their personal wealth and resources, their relationship towards and beliefs about value and wealth, and 2 the ways in which they can earn money and generate or attract wealth into their life. THIRD HOUSE (associated with Gemini, opposes the 9th house) The third house is the house of learning and communication. This area of the chart shows someone’s early developmental influences and education, as well as the influences that continue to socialize a person into their adult years. This includes: primary and secondary school (K-12) and the teachers a person has in their younger years. Close friends, siblings, neighbors and other social influences 3 which shape someone’s perception and expectations of “normal”. Mother tongue and early languages. Communication style and abilities. The third house also represents lower-level courts and judges and short distance travel. FOURTH HOUSE (associated with Cancer, opposes the 10th house) The fourth house is the house of “roots”: lineage, family line and ancestry are all show here. The fourth house will often show the qualities of someone’s upbringing and the ways they did or did not feel themselves protected or included, whether they experiences a sense of belonging, and any major influences their parents 4 imposed upon them. Though you may read of the fourth house being associated to only one parent, I have found it can describe either or both parents. © 2019 Renee Sills / Embodied Astrology. All rights reserved. House Meanings 8 Design by www.ASHGOOD.design FIFTH HOUSE (associated with Leo, opposes the 11th house) The fifth house is the place of someone’s creative energy and activity. This house describes how someone uses their vital energy and life force, and in turn what kinds of experiences or activities they find vitalizing and affirming. The fifth house contains informations about someone’s children, but also any other creations or 5 creative projects they make. The fifth house is also the house of play, playtime and playmates. It shows sports, hobbies and games as well as romantic interests and sex-for-fun. SIXTH HOUSE (associated with Virgo, opposes the 12th house) This sixth house is where we find information about someone’s job, routines, day-to-day activities, and co-workers. The sixth house describes the ways in which someone feels useful in life, how and where they work hard and what kind of 6 service(s) they feel the need to perform, or are obligated to. The sixth house is also the house of health and illness, and will describe the functioning of someone’s body on a day-to day level. SEVENTH HOUSE (associated with Libra, opposes the 1st house) The seventh house is the house of “other people” and of committed relationships and partnerships. In terms of other people, the seventh house will show people that are not immediate biological family, and who must be met on equal terms. 7 Classically, this house describes partnerships, which can include: spouses and life partners, business partners and other collaborators, and “open enemies”. Open enemies refers to people and relationships which are experienced as conflicted or adversarial in an obvious way for one or both persons. The seventh house also describes contracts and negotiations between partners, or the terms of agreement within the relationship. EIGHTH HOUSE (associated with Scorpio, opposes the 2nd house) The eighth house is the house of shared resources, secrets, and entanglements. The eighth house is often called “house of sex, death, and taxes”. It is where 8 resources are shared and exchanged either through marriage, inheritance or debt. It describes the emotional sentiments of a relationship that lie deeper than seventh house “agreements and contracts”. Thus, the eighth house is also the place of the taboo, and where secrets and other emotional entanglements can be found. Finally, the eighth house is the house of dying. It does not show death itself, but rather the process of dying and confrontation with death. In this correspondence, eighth house themes can be understood also as deep emotional attachments and bonds that don’t easily release, and complex internal states and sensations that will be hard or impossible to talk about. © 2019 Renee Sills / Embodied Astrology. It is the learning that someone will pursue 9 of their own volition, or as a course towards professionalism and mastery. The ninth house is associated with higher-level education and academia, as well as the figures found in the academy: scholars, advisors, professors etc. More expansively, the ninth house symbolizes any quest for knowledge or wisdom, and thus includes philosophies, religions and esoteric study of all kinds as well as gurus and spiritual teachers. The ninth house also represents upper level courts and judges, long-distance travel, foreigners, and foreign languages. TENTH HOUSE (associated with Capricorn, opposes the 4th house) 10 The tenth house naturally continues the themes of the ninth house by applying a person’s beliefs into action. The tenth house is where we look to find information about someone’s adult identity and how they need to present themselves publicly and professionally, as well as their relationship to authority and authority figures. It may show someone’s vocation, their desires for accomplishment and recognition, or the general purpose they feel the need to live into and strive for. ELEVENTH HOUSE (associated with Aquarius, opposes the 5th house) The eleventh house shows the worries and hopes for someone’s creative project 11 outcomes, and the future of their children (opposite of the fifth.) The eleventh house is also the house of friends and broader social networks (the third house describes very close, childhood friends, or longterm friends who become like siblings. The eleventh house would show friendships that are less close/ sibling-like.) The eleventh house also represents ideas and idealism about outcomes and social groups, and therefore represents social causes and organizing. TWELFTH HOUSE (associated with Pisces, opposes the 6th house) The twelfth house is the place of unseen forces. It is the last house in the chart wheel and acts as a collecting place for issues and themes related to all the previous houses, which remain unconscious and unprocessed. The twelfth house precedes the first house of identity, and in this representation it shows the gestation period, as well as 12 what Carl Jung called “the collective unconscious”, or what you might think of as the accumulative residue, or emotional totality of a place or any large group of people. The twelfth house can also show people or entities that are unseen or unknown: those that are in support of a person’s efforts (like angels and guides), as well as those who work against a person’s efforts (unseen enemies.) Finally, the twelfth house is the house of death, and the ways which we dilute our own energy (usually unconsciously), and work against our own life force or seek escapes from materiality. In this association the twelfth house also represents places of invisibility and internment. © 2019 Renee Sills / Embodied Astrology. All rights reserved.
