ANNUAL REVIEW2012 2012 was a phenomenal year for the Globe In an Olympic year packed with events throughout the capital, Globe to Globe, our contribution to the London 2012 Festival and the Cultural Olympiad, distinguished itself by its sheer scale, variety and creative ambition. It brought a huge new audience to the theatre and created a wonderfully festive multilingual showcase for Shakespeare, the Globe and London. The festival was recognised in January 2013 with a rare special award from the Critics’ Circle. Our main theatre season, which marked the triumphant return of Mark Rylance and of Original Practices to the Globe, garnered awards and achieved excellent attendance figures. But this was a big season for artistic activity beyond Bankside too, with two West End transfers, a much more extensive touring programme and international premieres of our productions on screen. All this earned us the ‘London Theatre of the Year’ award from The Stage. We are pleased to report that these achievements did nothing to compromise our educational and other activities. This was another ambitious year of teaching and public events and of developments in print and digital publishing. 2012 also brought enhancements to our exhibition and tour and saw the steady WELCOME! expansion of our retail, catering and hospitality operations. But perhaps most excitingly of all, following decades of planning and a period of intense fundraising, work began on the construction of our indoor theatre, now named the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. All this was achieved without government funding and in a climate of financial austerity. ‘ The Globe to Globe season was a one-off, once-in-a- lifetime event that changed the cultural landscape of globe to globe London theatreland in every sense for six weeks last summer.

Made by Carnival Films, the Golden Globe® and Emmy® award- winning producers of Downton Abbey, the show airs on BBC America on 10 October, 2015 and later the same month on BBC Two. BAFTA nominated and RTS award-winning writer Stephen Butchard, (Good Cop, Five Daughters, House of Saddam), has adapted Bernard Cornwell’s best-selling franchise “The Saxon Stories” for the screen. Cornwell is also known for his much-loved “Sharpe” novels that became the long- running TV series of the same name starring Sean Bean. The series cast is headed up by Alexander Dreymon (American Horror Story, Blood Ransom), playing Uhtred of Bebbanburg, with Emily Cox (Homeland) as Brida, Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner, Galavant) as Ravn, Matthew Macfadyen (The Enfield Haunting, Ripper Street) as Lord Uhtred, David Dawson (Peaky Blinders) as Alfred, Rune Temte (Eddie the Eagle) as Ubba, Ian Hart (Boardwalk Empire) as Beocca and Adrian Bower (Mount Pleasant) as Leofic. PETULA CLARK AND JOSEPH MILLSON JOIN THE CAST OF DISNEY AND CAMERON MACKINTOSH’S MULTI AWARD-WINNING M A R Y P O P P I N S Cameron Mackintosh and Disney are delighted to announce that Petula Clark and Joseph Millson will join the Company to play the Bird Woman and George Banks in the new production of Mary Poppins, which returns to its original West End home at the Prince Edward Theatre from 23 October 2019. They join the previously announced Zizi Strallen in the title role and Charlie Stemp as Bert. The magical story of the world’s favourite Nanny arriving on Cherry Tree Lane has been triumphantly and spectacularly brought to the stage with dazzling choreography, incredible effects and unforgettable songs. The stage version of Mary Poppins, brilliantly adapted from the wonderful stories by PL Travers and the original beloved Walt Disney film, continues to be a smash hit around the world since it opening in London 15 years ago. Petula Clark became a star in the UK at nine years old singing for the troops stationed in England during World War II. Many years later she moved to France and soon became an European star recording in English, French, Italian, German and Spanish. While still living in Paris, English songwriter Tony Hatch presented her with his new composition, Downtown, which became a worldwide hit and led to a string of top ten records, winning her two Grammy awards and making her an international star. She later met with Charlie Chaplin who penned one of her further major hits This Is My Song.
