[email protected] qub.ac.uk/icc http://www.qub.ac.uk/schools/InstituteofCognitionCulture/Staff/ JesseMBering/ Abstract: The present article examines how people’s belief in an afterlife, as well as closely related supernatural beliefs, may open an empirical backdoor to our understanding of the evolution of human social cognition. Recent findings and logic from the cognitive sciences contribute to a novel theory of existential psychology, one that is grounded in the tenets of Darwinian natural selection. Many of the predominant questions of existential psychology strike at the heart of cognitive science. They involve: causal attribution (why is mortal behavior represented as being causally related to one’s afterlife? how are dead agents envisaged as communicating messages to the living?), moral judgment (why are certain social behaviors, i.e., transgressions, believed to have ultimate repercussions after death or to reap the punishment of disgruntled ancestors?), theory of mind (how can we know what it is “like” to be dead? what social-cognitive strategies do people use to reason about the minds of the dead?), concept acquisition (how does a common-sense dualism interact with a formalized socio-religious indoctrination in childhood? how are supernatural properties of the dead conceptualized by young minds?), and teleological reasoning (why do people so often see their lives as being designed for a purpose that must be accomplished before they perish? how do various life events affect people’s interpretation of this purpose?), among others. -
In Defence of Folk Psychology

Might it turn out that there are no beliefs and desires? Patricia and Paul Churchland say yes. ~ We say no. In part one we give our positive argument for the existence of beliefs and desires, and in part two we offer a diagnosis of what has misled the Church- lands into holding that it might very well turn out that there are no beliefs and desires. 1. THE EXISTENCE OF BELIEFS AND DESIRES 1.1. Our Strategy Eliminativists do not insist that it is certain as of now that there are no beliefs and desires. They insist that it might very well turn out that there are no beliefs and desires. Thus, in order to engage with their position, we need to provide a case for beliefs and desires which, in addition to being a strong one given what we now know, is one which is peculiarly unlikely to be undermined by future progress in neuroscience. Our first step towards providing such a case is to observe that the question of the existence of beliefs and desires as conceived in folk psychology can be divided into two questions. There exist beliefs and desires if there exist creatures with states truly describable as states of believing that such-and-such or desiring that so-and-so. Our question, then, can be divided into two questions. First, what is it for a state to be truly describable as a belief or as a desire; what, that is, needs to be the case according to our folk conception of belief and desire for a state to be a belief or a desire? Psychometric g: Definition and Substantiation Arthur R. Jensen University of Culifornia, Berkeley The construct known as psychometric g is arguably the most important construct in all of psychology largelybecause of its ubiquitous presence in all tests of mental ability and its wide-ranging predictive validity for a great many socially significant variables, including scholastic performance and intellectual attainments, occupational status, job performance, in- come, law abidingness, and welfare dependency. Even such nonintellec- tual variables as myopia, general health, and longevity, as well as many other physical traits, are positively related to g. Of course, the causal con- nections in the whole nexus of the many diverse phenomena involving the g factor is highly complex. Indeed, g and its ramifications cut across the behavioral sciences-brainphysiology, psychology, sociology-perhaps more than any other scientific construct. THE DOMAIN OF g THEORY It is important to keep in mind the distinction between intelligence and g, as these terms are used here. The psychology of intelligence could, at least in theory, be based on the study of one person,just as Ebbinghaus discov- ered some of the laws of learning and memory in experimentswith N = 1, using himself as his experimental subject. Intelligence is an open-ended category for all those mental processes we view as cognitive, such as stimu- lus apprehension, perception, attention, discrimination, generalization, 39 40 JENSEN learning and learning-set acquisition, short-term and long-term memory, inference, thinking, relation eduction, inductive and deductive reasoning, insight, problem solving, and language. The g factor is something else. It could never have been discovered with N = 1, because it reflects individual di,fferences in performance on tests or tasks that involve anyone or moreof the kinds of processes just referred to as intelligence. -

HOW MUSIC MAKES US FEEL by ALEXANDER ECONOMIDES Under the Direction of Andrea Scarantino ABSTRACT According to folk psychology, instrumental music regularly elicits emotions in listeners. Philos- ophers and psychologists such as Kivy, Konecni and Zangwill have questioned the existence of these musically elicited emotions, arguing that instrumental music elicits moods or aesthetic judgments rather than emotions. I defend the folk psychological position against these skeptics. The first chapter sets up the debate surrounding musically elicited emotions, while chapters two and three defend the thesis that instrumental music elicits emotions against the critics’ argu- ments. The different theories of how language could help in this process of development are explored. A brief account is provided of the controversy over the capacities of infants to read others’ false beliefs. Then the empirical literature on the steps in theory of mind development is summarized, considering studies on both typically developing and various language-delayed children. Suggestions are made for intervention by speech language pathologists to enhance the child’s access to understanding the minds of others. Folk psychology as attribution of the attitudes The everyday human practices of predicting, explaining, interpreting, judging, coordinating and otherwise socially interacting with others are grounded in an understanding of others as minded agents. This understanding of others is commonly understood as requiring the ability to attribute mental states— paradigmatically beliefs and desires. However, there is good reason to think that the commonsense conception of the mind is pluralistic, and not limited to the attribution of propositional attitudes. While it is true that part of the commonsense view is that people act for reasons, and that those reasons are mentally represented propositions, the folk also think that people act because of who they are as persons. I will argue that people predict and explain behavior by appeal to personality traits, and that at least some personality traits cannot be understood as an oblique reference to beliefs, desires, or any other propositional attitude. -

As indices of physical health, we aggregated ‘abnormality counts’ of Health physician-assessed neurological, morphological, and physiological abnormalities in eight Mutation load categories: cranial nerves, motor nerves, peripheral sensory nerves, reflexes, head, body, skin condition, and urine tests. Since each abnormality was rare, the abnormality counts showed highly skewed, Poisson-like distributions. The correlation matrix amongst these eight abnormality counts formed only a weak positive manifold and thus yielded only a weak common factor. -

Why do people differ in personality? What is the structure of individual differences in intelligence? What are the roles of nurture and nature? Researchers in these fields collect data of many subjects and apply statistical methods, most notably latent structure modeling, to uncover the structure and to infer the underlying sources of the individual differences. Cognitive science usually does not concern individual differences. In cognitive models we focus on the general mechanisms of cognitive processes and not the individual properties. We believe that these two traditions of modeling cannot remain separated. Models of mechanisms necessarily precede models of individual differences. We argue against the use of latent structure models of individual differences in psychological processes that do not explicate the underlying mechanisms. Our main example is general intelligence, a concept based on the analysis of group data. Scores on cognitive tasks used in intelligence tests correlate positively with each other, i.e., they display a positive manifold of correlations. The positive manifold is arguably both the best established, and the most striking phenomenon in the psychological study of intelligence. -

Bennett, Ph.D. Intercultural Development Research Institute What I'd like to do with you today is to extend a conversation begun with a couple of blogs I have published recently, adding a specific application to the topic of assessing intercultural competence. One of blogs that I wrote in June held that was time to retire the iceberg as a metaphor for culture. There were dozens of responses to that blog, from far more people than I thought would be reading the blog. This led to a very interesting conversation that I think is related to intercultural competence. The other blog is one I wrote comparing intercultural competence to the idea of intelligence, particularly its measurement as IQ. The issue around both blogs is that of "reification" (I'll give you the definition in a moment) and it is also the issue I believe we are dealing with in trying to talk about the assessment of intercultural competence. Basically, we need to "de- reify" the ideas of culture and intercultural competence back to some original root definition that would allow us to reestablish a more coherent approach to assessment. To put this talk in cultural terms, I'll be taking a more European than American approach. Americans tend to start out very optimistic about everything and in the end they do a little criticism. Europeans tend to do the reverse; they start with being very critical and sometimes end up with constructive suggestions. -

Jensen University of California, Berkeley "Intelligence" has been tried and apparently it has failed. Anyone who reads the recent book What is Intelligence? Contemporary View- points on its Nature and Definition, edited by Sternberg and Detterman (1986), in which 25 experts responded to the question posed in the title, could easily conclude that there are about as many different conceptions of "intelligence" as the number of experts. This was also true back in 1921 when the same question was asked of an earlier group of experts. Comparing the two symposia, separated by 65 years, we find scarcely more consensus among the experts today than in 1921. Shouldn't this be cause for dismay to us who work in this field? Is there something wrong with our science, that there is so little agreement, even about what are the key questions, much less the answers? One of the intellectually appealing features of progress in the more advanced empirical sciences is the increasing consensus among scientists regarding the definition and nature of the main phenomena within their purview. Investigation of some coherent body of phenomena leads to more agreement about the crucial questions and problems. True, there is always a frontier of unsettled issues and controversies in science; but with consolidation of the gains of research, there is also a growing consensus. The history of the physical and biological sciences indicates that generally, as a topic develops, an increasing majority of re- searchers acknowledge the key phenomena that call for more intensive investiga- tion. -

ABSTRACT The proper range and content of the unconscious in the human sciences should be established by reference to its conceptual relationship to the folk psychology that informs the standard form of explanation therein. A study of this relationship shows that human scientists should appeal to the unconscious only when the language of the conscious fails them, that is typically when they find a conflict between people's self-understanding and their actions. This study also shows that human scientists should adopt a broader concept of the unconscious than the one developed by Freud, that is, one free from his ahistorical concept of the instincts and his ahistorical emphasis on the sexual experiences of childhood. The unconscious, understood in this way, has an ambiguous relationship to more recent linguistic and narrativist strands of psycho-analysis. III. Where people had found meaningless stuff, they now find patterns of behaviour that make sense.
